I would pay a monthly fee for a completely tracking & ad-free social media, but we all know that won't be the case here lol. The lizard man just wants people to pay for a checkmark and the privilege to be spied on.

Man, I miss Myspace.

Here's what will happen… MORE fake accounts will crop up… and they will photoshop documents to "prove" they are "real" and also take over someone elses accounts - this is basically a Use-Tax for using FB… if it came with 100% privacy - no ads, and no tracking… then I might consider it. But YOU are still the product. And your data is your currency. This is just a trial-smoke-screen to see what they can get away with.

I just don't believe a monthly subscription to social media platforms will work. After years of being free and most people aware they are the product that makes these companies billions, I don't see a mass adoption happening at all.
I hope FB dies. That platform is junk and Zuk is an a..hole.

These subscription models for social networks feel like such a kneejerk reaction to the failing ad-based revenue business model. Verification was only really beneficial to notable public figures who may (and often do) fall victim to impersonation. These subs offer little-to-no value for average users and just comes across as desperate.

On the other hand, I think Meta would greatly benefit from a Game Pass-like subscription for their VR headsets. That's something I'd maybe be interested in.

Facebook sees a really really bad idea that everyone on the internet universally hates and pans... Decides to adopt it themselves at an even higher price point. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️

Elon proved there was a market to tap into where some folks would pay a subscription fee for a cosmetic blue check. While 90% of folks would laugh at the idea, 10% are reaching for their wallets. That's a lot of money to leave on the table when it takes minimal effort to implement basically an icon in your app! Snapchat and others will follow suit.

FaceBook is still dying a slow death as most younger folks moved on to other platforms.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the weekend announced the upcoming launch of a new "Meta Verified" subscription service that's designed for Facebook users, which will provide verification for $11.99 per month on the web or $14.99 per month on the iPhone or the iPad.

Facebook-Feature.jpg

Zuckerberg described Meta Verified as a subscription that lets individuals verify an account with a government ID, get a blue badge, and get "extra impersonation protection" against accounts that are "claiming to be you." It also comes with "direct access to customer support, exclusive stickers, and a news release describing the feature says that it will include "access to increased visibility and reach." A full list of announced features:
  • A verified badge, confirming you're the real you and that your account has been authenticated with a government ID.
  • More protection from impersonation with proactive account monitoring for impersonators who might target people with growing online audiences.
  • Help when you need it with access to a real person for common account issues.
  • Increased visibility and reach with prominence in some areas of the platform- like search, comments and recommendations.
  • Exclusive features to express yourself in unique ways.
The service is "about increasing authenticity and security" across Meta services, and it follows Twitter Blue, Twitter's $8 per month subscription service that provides a blue checkmark and provides access to features like Edit Tweet.

Meta also plans to make the same verification process available on Instagram, but separate subscriptions will be required for each platform, so an individual or business that wants to be verified on both Facebook and Instagram will need to pay separate subscription fees.

Instagram and Facebook are monetized through advertising at the current time, but changes like Apple's App Tracking Transparency can make ads an unreliable revenue stream. Subscription payments will give Facebook a steady monthly income.

Meta Verified will roll out in Australia and New Zealand this week before it expands to additional countries. Meta says that as it tests and learns, there will be no changes to accounts on Instagram and Facebook that were already verified, but the meaning of the verified badge is "expanding."

What happens if Facebook gets hack? Your government ID info is in the hands of the hackers. Talk about identity theft. This is an invite to hackers to hack Facebook IMO.

So, let me get that straight, Zuckie asks for 12/month from a user, so he can verify to the advertisers that the user is actually a true person and not a troll bot account? So, practically, the user is paying to enjoy intensive advert and spam campaigns, as no advertiser ever cared to sell anything troll bots.
Well, hmmm, what about no?

The issue with that is that most people won't, and a social media platform is only as vibrant as the people on it.

The closest I can think of is still Mastodon, which is free with an optional Patreon tier, plus there are some very nice third party apps for the platform (which makes it an even better experience given how the other platforms have largely blocked third party apps from working, mostly because they block ads). But it's telling that many journalists still insist on sticking with Twitter, and their Mastodon presence is mainly complaining about their Twitter experience.

I suspect that the people who will pay are mostly influencers and businesses, which means your feeds will soon be inundated with even more sponsored posts (basically ads). I wonder if it will be enough to offset the losses from ATT though.

So people are no longer trading privacy for addiction/affirmation ... trading privacy and money.

Hold the phone, this sounds like one of Elon Musk brain dead schemes now it's on Facebook.

Things I would pay Instagram $12 for: remove all ads and "suggestions" from my feed forever, and stop trying to track me.

This is Meta adding a new "basic economy" tier so they can charge you to upgrade to the service you already thought you were getting.

The one opportunity FB had to give us the ability to pay a subscription for an ad-free platform (perhaps the way all social media should be, so that we-the-users are not the product) … and they blow it on a gimmick, copy-cat, for-show icon that only celebrities and and oddball FB devotees will pay for.

At this point, Zuckerberg has to be a robot to be this stupid and out of touch.

FB Groups are still useful IMO, but I wouldn't mind this whole CIA project going the way of MySpace.
