It’s almost as if Facebook doesn’t know that people don’t like them. They keep making products that no one will buy because they’re Facebook.
Sadly, although many people don’t like them, many more people either do or let various perceived conveniences override their dislike. This is what gives Suckerberg his power and wealth.

I can't imagine the consumer who purchases one of these devices
The same consumer who doesn’t care that FB treats them as a marketable data mine, laughing at privacy, and giving the finger to oversight. That consumer is one of 2.41 billion as of last quarter. FB doesn’t need to sell to a large fraction of these spycams to those sheep in order to make a dandy profit.

This product will fail. Waste of time for Facebook.

Can’t imagine there are too many stupid people would put Facebook spy camera and microphones in their home.

But besides that, what use case does this solve? Who actually needs or wants this in the age of mobile phones and tablets?

Exactly. My father and I have had arguments because he posts constantly on Facebook and I've told him over and over to not put my photo or anything about me on there.

If anyone ever decides to do this (I mean fall for this), don't go bitching about what happens later. Don't act surprised. Hang your head in shame. :)

Well it is possible to go into something like this with eyes wide open. But most do not.

“He thought of the telescreen with its never-sleeping ear. They could spy upon you night and day, but if you kept your head you could still outwit them. With all their cleverness they had never mastered the secret of finding out what another human being was thinking. . . . Facts, at any rate, could not be kept hidden. They could be tracked down by inquiry, they could be squeezed out of you by torture. But if the object was not to stay alive but to stay human, what difference did it ultimately make? They could not alter your feelings; for that matter you could not alter them yourself, even if you wanted to. They could lay bare in the utmost detail everything that you had done or said or thought; but the inner heart, whose workings were mysterious even to yourself, remained impregnable.”

People may use Facebook, but that’s out of lack of competition. People (myself included) give up their information and pictures to be able to be apart of the network of friends and family that only Facebook can provide.

They won’t, however, go out and buy a Facebook camera...place it in their home....and shoot away. This will not be successful.
But what if the same network of friends and family (not specifically yours but that of any of the rest of us) starts putting the same pressure for video calling, since to them it’s just an extension of the community they already are a part of and innocently think is the greatest thing? Some of them are going to be self absorbed enough to see how easy it is now to video chat and will make life hell for other participants and holdouts alike.

Good lord I don’t want to bring all the horrors of FB communication into my living room. All that nonsense will literally be in my face.

The people who were worth keeping in touch with do keep in touch even after I left. What I left behind were the people who found FB provides an environment to basically emotionally blackmail friends and family to pay for not just their own bills but the bills of their friends and relatives you’ll never meet. To hit you up for every fundraiser that comes across their newsfeed that you know they won’t donate to but expect you to because it’s such a great cause and you’re an absolute beast if you don’t like and share.

Oh and don’t get me started on the ones who got into those pyramid sales schemes. I think women like me are seen as prime targets for that sort of thing. My husband is still on FB and escapes at least that. I was being inundated by a few women who were themselves involved in that or shilling for their daughters. These are the people who will be getting this #%^ video chat monstrosity without a doubt.

No goodness I don’t want to constantly be fending off video chat requests to join my friend’s daughter’s miracle DNA repair cream party.

AKA they need more sources of information about you.

Ditched Facebook long ago - their apps are full of harvesting methods and techniques to get as much about you and your habits as possible, although Apple is going against it with iOS 13 to limit background activity, still they have many engineers who improve their abilities to get as much as possible. I'm not even mentioning Android, it's total disaster.

I have been a bit smarter this time around when creating a new FB account to follow and read certain groups which are private.
  • Prepaid phone number,
  • Took a few photos from not so much popular TV show (off a TV screen) to be safe in case they need to "VERIFY" my identity with more photos in the future
  • Always use very web browser environment (SnowHaze on iOS) where I'm able to control what they can access about the device.
  • Rotating IPs via Proton VPN service.
  • Never ACCESS FB from home IP which I have static for a few reasons.
This way they have absolutely no DATA about my person thus after months of using such account on approx weekly basis I have yet to see a single suggested person which I personally know. It may seem like too much of work to be done but it's actually not - tap ProtonVPN Random connection profile, open SnowHaze (which removes all data after every session) open FB and autofill credentials - this easy it can be to protect your privacy :)

I had a similar situation with my soon to be wife. A quick talk about how ****** FB is solved the problem. No more photos of me on FB, and much much less posting on FB from her side after the talk. After we got engaged and she posted it there - of course... you can imagine what kind of ADS started to show up to her..

Yea they do. People would rather be apart of the community than not. It’s not like there’s a competitor. You either deal with the privacy concerns or ignore the community.

I thought Facebook accounts couldn’t be deleted but only deactivated?
There is definitely a DELETE option on every Facebook account. After 30 days of not logging in the account will be "deleted" according to Facebook. True question is, do they really delete all your data?

Others have mentioned it, but a FaceTime camera for the Apple TV would be rad. When the Kinect camera was a thing, I tried to Skype with family members but they couldn't figure it out. FaceTime they took to instantly.

The question is are you a user and if so then you already have one on your smartphone, tablet and/or laptop.
I still have an account, but I don't grant the app access to the camera/microphone on my phone. I hope that I can trust Apple to enforce that.
