Really? Google has been doing it for a decade. They even scan your email to get information about you. If you're worried about anyone, worry about Google.

All companies collect data on their users, including Google. Google, as far as I can remember, haven't had any major privacy issues (unless you count the Street View controversy ).

Facebook is different: they've consistently shown an utter disregard for users' privacy and ability to choose.

Facebook stock takes a dump in 5...4...3...2....1

Unfortunately, I won't be surprised if it's Apple's shares that take a dive instead. Just imagine all the dopey "analyst" stories we're going to see about how Apple is facing its demise with this new Facebook phone. Don't laugh, it'll happen.

However I do hope that it has some new and interesting features which will push apple to make a better iOS7. Thats my 2 cents.

I agree. Apple needs to be pushed more with their software. Hopefully iOS 7 has some new, useful feature.

I'm fairly confident they aren't going to release a smartphone OS. I'm willing to bet they might release a stand alone VOIP App, and possibly a search engine partnership with Bing, but a phone seems unlikely. Surely this has to be a joke?

I wonder what Steve would have thought about a Facebook phone. From the Steve Jobs biography:

The story goes that ESPN president George Bodenheimer attended the first Disney board meeting in Orlando, Florida, just after the company had bought Pixar, the innovative animation factory, and spotted Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a hallway. It seemed like a good time to introduce himself. “I am George Bodenheimer,” he said to Jobs. “I run ESPN.” Jobs just looked at him and said nothing other than “Your phone is the dumbest [effing] idea I have ever heard,” then turned and walked away.

I know I'm prob not the target audience, but I can't think of a device I would want less.

Actually, I struggle to see who would want it at all. If there was a market for it, it vanished about 1-2 years ago; they've missed their window.

I know of more and more people ditching Facebook altogether. I think this announcement will only accelerate the backlash against them.

And if your phone is stolen, you won't have to worry about your private information falling into the wrong hands.

Because it already did when you gave it to Facebook.

Is the tin foil hat you're wearing to tight?

At least it's designed by Americans. I'm all for people using Amazon or Facebook products over Korean and Taiwanese products from Samsung, LG, and HTC.

Oh the irony....

so true.

Apple is the only one now who isn't taking our information and selling it off to the world through ads to data mining companies

You won't see iAds on 100 different devices , desktops or web pages.

Apple is not in the business of pure advertising like a company I know.

;)

Google doesn't sell your personal information to data mining companies. Neither does Apple. Let's not spread FUD.

Facebook as a phone brand? No. Their brand does not translate to smartphones at all.

Slight correction, if I may.

"Their brand does not translate to smart at all."

The last thing the world needs is more Facebook.

This plus all the recent news about Facebook's issues with monetizing, makes me think that the company is getting desperate.

Majority of the people I know are using Facebook less and less.
Anyone else having similar experiences?

I don't understand this from a business perspective...BlackBerry and Nokia can't even make a proper dent in the saturated market, what's Facebook going to do?

Where in my post did I mention selling anything ?

Where did I say YOU said it? Just following the thread there :)

And iAds are available on the various iPhone models and iPads. For now. We'll have to see if they move over to Apple TV and desktops. If Apple can monetize it (because they're certainly not making great strides in that arena despite their trying) they will.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Apple wishes it was as successful with iAds as Google is with their ads. And if they had been - I doubt many would be spreading FUD about Apple selling people's personal information to advertisers or the fact that "you" are the product.
