No thank you. I don't want to a phone closely tied to a social media service notorious for privacy issues.

Isn't it a new home screen / launcher for Android, replacing HTC Sense or Samsung Touchwiz? Not a phone as such.

According to some, it's called Facebook Home.

Atleast there will be something interesting on april 4 ;)

The facebook phone - no way

But the idea behind it and the engineering - am all in

why is every new phone coming in market labeled as iPhone competitor.
Tomorrow if Nokia relaunches Nokia 3310 then that too will be said as iPhone competitor.

Lol at Google

I wonder if they still think giving Android away for free was a good idea. Now that their #1 ad competitor is trying to use it against them.

Amazon
Samsung
Baidu

Add FB to that list of Google rivals Android is helping make rich

So Apple got into the advertising business with no intention of earning revenue?

You can't seriously believe this.
No intention of earning anything significant. iAds is about making iOS more appealing to the consumer. This is to be accomplished by having the ads be less annoying and intrusive, all the while making the ads that people do click on more feature-rich and enjoyable.

So, you're saying that Apple's iAd is just as consumer-hostile and exploitative as Google's ad business?

You can't seriously believe this!

I work at a high school. Last time I made a joke facebook reference he kids mocked me for bringing up facebook. If you did not know this, yes facebook is for old people now.

Given this insight, aside from people trying to look hip and young, without the young people interested I would not think a facebook phone would do well. Reminds me of that one phone that had that "1 button click to facebook" feature. It may have been a nokia, I forget, didn't do well at all.

However I do hope that it has some new and interesting features which will push apple to make a better iOS7. Thats my 2 cents.

Facebook is still the second most trafficked website after only Google according to alexa or whatever the web traffic website is called.

If they're not on Facebook, what are they on?

Or maybe it'll be a deeply integrated facebook data-mining button in all android devices. That would be some devious mischief right there.

The only way they'll get people to buy into this is if they offer a heavily-subsidized phone plan.

Facebook on Android phone: Privacy concerns meet Security Vulnerabilities.

No thank you. I don't want to a phone closely tied to a social media service notorious for privacy issues.

That's also the first thing that popped into my mind, as I read the article.

.....According to reports, the device would be an HTC handset running a Facebook-modified version of Android.....

.....There have been persistent rumors of Facebook working on a smartphone, with Bloomberg reporting in 2010 that the phone would be based on a "stripped-down" version of Android.....

More Android fragmentation. Must be music to APPLE's ears.
Does anyone else find it ironic that the announcement event is taking place at 1 Hacker Way?

A "stripped-down version of Android" in the same vain as Amazon's? No thanks.

Even worse, Facebook will be collecting a lot of data from its phone users, which is really concerning.

Not to Facebook users, most are willing to sell their credit report for a free game download.

Facebook would like to know your penis size too.
Who says they don't already.........????

Then why do I keep getting email offering me drugs that will make it smaller lengths?

/sorry, that reply just popped to my head

As always, if you're not paying for the product, its likely that you are the product. I love Google and Facebook like I love bears, beautiful creatures that should be admired, but interaction will only take place if there are steels bars between.

oh yeah, great news!

and whomever the genius was at Apple who thought it was a good idea to enshrine Facebook into the very heart of the operating system, nice job, Einstein, you're fired!

Facebook is lost its luster. On to the next one.

exactly! except when that day comes, Apple will have to willfully remove this passé crap from the OS, thus removing functionally a significant number of users have come to take for granted. aren't they glad they didn't bake MySpace into the iPhone in 2007? they could have left well enough alone and let people simply use the FB app, but no, they put this stink all over the phone at every turn!

just brilliant. /s

I am quite looking forward to a Gameloft phone, which will finally run Gameloft HUGE games smoothly.

The problem is that even if you pay over $500 for it, you'll have almost all the necessary features will be optional purchases to buy.

Browser: $10.
App store: $25
Clock: $5
Weather: $15
Maps: $20

and so on and so on. The issue is that they'll show them in the homescreen like normal apps; like they're bundled with the phone. But when you click it, it'll redirect to the store app :p

By that logic, Mac OS X is a fragmentation of UNIX. And the iPhone is a fragmentation of the Mac OS.

No. Because android itself is a distro of linux, which can run unique apps designed for that certain platform. This thing might be locked out of android apps like the kindle fire, but still, it's a fork of android so it'll run differently to how the developers intended it to.

So most likely not all of the apps will run as they should have. As well, google-released updates won't work on this. Plus, there'l be another app store.

All of this increases fragmentation.

In addition, with the iOS and OS X situation, iOS is merely a stripped down version of OS X. It's not intended to run OS X apps. It's not intended to get the same updates OS X has. It's really just a situation of "hey, we need an OS. Let's do this to OS X, and we'll treat it like an entirely new OS". That's what they're doing.
