Reminds me of people who buy really expensive professional DSLR cameras to just take some family vacation photos that end up not looking any better than a snapshot using an iPod touch
So wrong. I am an amateur photographer and my Nikon D90 produces incredible photos when even set on Automatic.

Time to delete instagram then.
You assume your photos are actually deleted when you "cancel" your account. Much like your Facebook profile, it probably continues to be stored and datamined on the server for months after that.

As they said in WarGames; "The only way to win is not to play."

One thing to note is that Sequoia Capital owns a significant position in Facebook along with a very signification portion of Instagram (probably +60% based on valuation investments)

So essentially we have Sequoia Capital using pre IPO Facebook stock to redistribute itself an additional billion dollar position in the company devaluating other investors with increasing their position.

Seems pretty unethical.

Months?

On Facebook your stuff is NEVER deleted from their servers.
Take a look at the database dumps people were getting over in the EU.
The only "deleting" facebook does is set a delete flag on a database row.

And no MacRumors I DO NOT want to attach this to my previous post.

Big deal. Instagram is pointless anyways. "Here, have a look at this photo of my desk that I've filtered to make it look vintage!" Dumb.
Yeah I have tried to use it but find it pointless.

Someone paid 650 million for MySpace once. I suspect in five years this will not be considered a good use of a billion dollars. I suspect the instagram team successfully convinced Facebook that apple, google or Microsoft were about to snap them up.

I just don't think instagram provides any significant user loyalty nor technical benefits to make it worth that much. I think Zuckerberg got duped.

----------

Just wiped my account, but TBH I still feel happy for the guys who made the app. Congratulations to them for making something so successful they actually sold it for $1 billion. That's like my dream.

Unfortunately the 1 billion dollars is paid in Facebook credits.

A BILLION Dollars!?

Man, it's incredible how billions get thrown left and right in the industry. Would've never figured Instagram was worth that much.

gifboom is nice. and pretty interesting. It lets you capture 20 frames and upload a gif.

The entire basis of the app is story telling and sharing via 20 frame gifs.

God that sounds horrendously hipsterish. I suppose Instagram is too mainstream for you guys now?

It just seems this huge over-valuation of social media is a bubble due to burst that everyone can see coming. ...say 6 months after Facebook floats on the stock exchange, Goldman Sachs have made their profit and shareholders realise the company is making peanuts.

I think Facebook has become the new MySpace. Cluttered with garbage and about to start seeing members canceling or spending less and less time on it. I'm curious, are you guys still actively using Facebook?

considering Facebook can't even properly handle the Facebook app... I expect Instagram to become buggy as hell

I love how the iPad app has way less features than the iPhone app. Like the ability to block someone from showing up in your timeline. Super easy on iPhone, nowhere to be found on iPad. Anyway, I'm glad I never got into Instagram. A friend of mine just asked me a few days ago if I used it. NOPE!

Personally, less and less, but I have a business page on it which I update pretty often. Facebook is pretty cool for free advertising. The difference between FB and My ___ though is design. Facebook at least cares a little about that (which My___ learned too late in the game).

Read the entire article, it explains that they will remain completely separate.

You really need to read more than just one article. Zucker has already been giving interviews and talking about the ways they see it being integrated with Facebook. There are other articles with many direct quotes blowing up the internet as well. What they've said is they want to keep the app as a stand alone app from the Facebook app with integration into Facebook's web site as well. Meaning: there will continue to be an Instagram App, but it's feature set is coming to a Facebook photo album near you... and instant Facebook sharing is going to end up in the Instagram app. I'm sure someday they'll try to add the functions into the Facebook app, but they still haven't figured out how to make a mobile Facebook app work properly <g>

The only issue I have with this whole sale is that Facebook just seems to epically fail with security and privacy measures for it's users. Consistently.

At the same time, any time you load photos, personal information, or anything into some internet database, you're always at risk of having your personal info leaked.

It's just with Facebook the odds are ever in your favor of that happening.

Well, Instagram was using Amazon cloud storage and was a small company. They probably did delete your stuff for financial reasons... Facebook on the other hand.... I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them.

All you guys that's claiming a delete of the app and acct must be ones that didn't have any followers or anything good to share. The app is great at what it's for. The FB acquisition could ruin it with ads and such, but they could also make the app that much better now the capital is there to take it places Instagram could not before.

Quit your damn crying!!

Stupid move

Who knows what will happen with instagram, but I think this was a really dumb move by facebook for many reasons.

1. They are currently in their quite period vis a vis their IPO to come in May. This move just sent a BIG message. That they don't value the cash they will get that much. While 1B might be only 1% of their "valuation" based on the crazy math people are doing on the stock, it WILL represent 10-15% of the CASH they will receive FROM the IPO. Now this was a cash and stock deal, we just don't know how much. I think the message this sends is bad.

2. WHY buy when you can rent or rebuild. Honestly, how hard would it be to recreate an instagram? I don't THINK that instagram owns any patents around either their delivery or their SECRET SAUCE of vintage or filtered photos. Other company's are already starting to do this with both pictures AND video. Did they land on something interesting with filters, yep, but other than that it is replaceable.

3. On the build topic, for 1B I could have built this app, I could GIVE 5$ away to every user and gotten to 30MM users probably in about three months and STILL have 750$MM left over..to develop the product, buy more users, come up with something else, etc..

This was just a bad business move all around. I stand by my initial comment in this thread. This was a keep away in a big boys game.

I really don't know why?

They could have copied the whole app?! They just wanted the users? I really don't know. Even the App cubodo - path of moments is more interesting than instagram ... 1 Billion???

1B? Seems like somebody got a little scared and over payed for some IP that isn't even that unique or innovative.
