I had that annoying captcha problem as well.. bugged me for a couple of days. But the new update (1.3.8) fixes that for good.

Yup, positive. 1.3.8 did it for me . One whole day of happy, hassle free chatting, and still counting.![]()

1.4.9? You mean 1.3.8 or 1.4b14?
That's... a bit bizarre. I'm running the most recent beta and stable on my Leopard iMac and Tiger iBook, respectively. Try re-downloading manually from the Adium site.![]()
Mine was doing this until I went to the latest beta, however I have disabled the facebook chat due to the annoying sound of people signing on and off every couple of minutes. I need to look into seeing if there is a way to disable those sounds for just facebook

No, unfortunately you can't adjust the notification settings on a per-account basis, only per-contact or en masse.
Well, the only remaining variable that I can see is the Facebook account itself. Try creating a dummy account and see if that works. It's not a solution, but it might be a good indicator if it's worth pursuing the matter any further.
If it helps, I had the CAPTCHA persist earlier today, so I disabled the account for half an hour or so and it worked fine when I re-enabled it.
Alternatively, you could just wait for Facebook to come out with the promised XMPP API.
i wonder if it has anything to do with whether your facebook is signed in at the same time?
do you know when the XMPP API will be released?
hmmm its just so frustrating! i will upgrade to the latest SL tonight and have a play around and see how i go.When Facebook Messenger support was first added to Adium, it had a horrid habit of signing users out of the website. That has thankfully been fixed, although I do find myself occasionally having to log in despite having cookies saved.
Regardless, it always works for me whether I'm logged in or not, or even on the site while actively using Facebook Messenger in Adium. (The Facebook Messenger popup appears on the website as well with the other party's messages, but your own sent messages only appear where you send them, on the website or in Adium.)
Yeah, about six months ago.I remember reading more lengthy and eloquent discussions of the problem, but there's a rather succinct blog entry on the subject on the Adium blog.
Good news! Facebook Chat now works with Jabber/XMPP, which means you no longer have to rely on the buggy hacked-together interface that Adium uses. I'm sure the next version of Adium will replace the Facebook Chat bit with a custom Jabber system, but until then, you do it yourself like this:
1. If you have not already registered for a Facebook username, do so. If you're not sure, the linked page will tell you. Your username is the text following "http://www.facebook.com/".
2. Go to Adium -> Preferences -> General.
3. Uncheck your existing Facebook Chat account in the list if it's selected.
4. Click the + button in the bottom-left corner of the window and select Jabber.
5. For Jabber ID, type "[your username]@chat.facebook.com", and use your normal Facebook password.
6. Click Options, then deselect all of the checkboxes under Security.
7. Click OK.
These instructions are based on the Pidgin tutorial that I found elsewhere.
