Android is a mirage. I love some of the hardware that Samsung puts out, but android as an OS is just annoying.

If Facebook is so great and users feel like they need it so much, then why don't they offer an option to its users: either (a) get the free service with targeted advertising, which looks at your browsing habits, or (b) pay a monthly or yearly subscription fee. If the fee were in the reasonable ballpark (like $1 to $2 per month), I'd consider paying it if it meant I could get rid of all of the ads. On the other hand, if they tried to charge $10-$15 per month (like Netflix or Hulu), I think they'd see a mass exodus of users. They should at least consider testing the market to find out how much they're really worth.

Not saying it does. Just saying......
But what point are you making by saying it? Not trying to pick a fight, so correct me if I'm misunderstanding you, I'm very sensitive to straw-man/false equivalencies these days.

IF it isn't an abuse of a monopoly then it is competition. Which is fine. The whole rason'detre of free market capitalism. Actions don't have to be totally altruistic to be correct and good. Apple can do the right thing *and* profit from it. In fact when companies can do both they should. I think at least.

Which isn't to say I always think Apple is doing the right thing but here, with regardless to privacy and transparency, I think that they are.

Um..

Facebook 1.8 billion daily active users

Instagram 500 million daily active users

Whatsapp 2 billion active users
It is scary that 1 company owns 4 of the top 6 social media/chat platforms: Facebook, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram. If any company needs to have antitrust brought down on them it is Facebook.

Yep, they tried to buy Snaphat aswell!

Couldn't we just as easily conclude that Zuckerburg's comments are "self-serving and anti-competitive"? As soon as Zuckerburg stops selling people's privacy for his own enrichment, then he can assume the right to speak of being morally superior to those who are 'self-serving'!

No, he isn’t. He is a sniveling little billionaire crybaby. If you want to opt in by saying yes, track me and send me ads, feel free to do so, but by guessing here by all of the posts on Apple’s side, 95% will opt out. Me being one of those that opts out.

First, let's talk about the audience here on MacRumors, who are, on the whole, very very pro Apple. Your sample size here is very poor. Even less amongst this group actually has a handle on what these changes mean as a whole.

Facebook is a terrible company with many problems, but these changes *are not* about Facebook, they're simply the only company with the market capital (both PR and fiscal) to push back. Google isn't really pushing back because as a platform holder, they have their own similar solution coming in the next 18-24 months.

Most free app and free mobile game developers are very worried. By all means, opt out of Facebook... but are you going to opt into anything else? I doubt it. The dialogue is designed to make it as scary as possible, after all. Apple hates free apps.

Someone doing the ad integrations at Macrumors is also probably pretty scared as well, since these changes also impact Safari on MacOS. Their eCPMs are going to tumble.

Seems like a pretty easy solution. You opt in to tracking with ads if you want the "free" (which is a false notion in reality; you're simply paying with a different type of funding), or you pay to buy or subscribe if you want an add-free experience.

I've never quite understood why so many people think it's horrible to buy something that you want to use. I'd much rather pay for a few specific services/apps/providers that give me what I know I want than sit through a bajillion ads for things I have no interest in. Even the majority of targeted ads are worthless, IMO. All ads do is try to make me discontent with what I already have.
