I only use it to talk to friends overseas and I just told them I'm no longer going to use WhatsApp so we need to switch to something else. I don't think it was much of a hassle as we've switched thru almost all the popular IM apps over the years so they were fine with it, and I'm sure they still use it, just not to message me since I don't use it

But WhatsApp os encrypted, unlike Facebook (my entire office uses it for that reason, maybe all of Turkey for all I know)

what’s next? prepare yourself, the days of creating fakes account to protect your identity will be over, lol, FB will require a a scan copy of your driver license, social security card, birth certificate etc, only private companies can ask for those kind of documents and they do it to provide a service like assistant, the funny thing is that many people will agree to this, they are hook to FB, is like addiction to them, i hate when a email service provider try to forced me to give a phone # to verify my identity, they do this because they want to know who you are, fake accounts are use for many bad things but they can also be use for good to protect your real identity.

"Facebook will be notifying Instagram users whose passwords were improperly stored, and Instagram users who are concerned about their accounts should change their passwords and make sure two-factor authentication is enabled."

So, their not gonna encrypt them, their just gonna tell people to use two-factor ?

They hired the wrong developers. No educated developer would EVER store passwords in plain text, at any time... ever. The fact that this happened is just wrong.

1) Developers in a shop like this don’t work in a vacuum. It speaks to the entire change management process too.

2) Obviously the responsibles (directly and indirectly involved) can be easily identified and need disciplined...along with CMS reforms and the establishment of safeguards with active auditing and monitoring.

That is still no excuse for allowing it... True, the larger the group, the more difficult it is to control, but i would argue that if everyone trusts one another 100%, there becomes no question but 100% privacy. We haven't got there yet, and we arn't exactly learning by it either because it keeps happening somewhere else...Laws prevail as well, which makes things even more complicated when it supposed to be about encryption.

Easier to control in same country, than scattered through the world, but "possibly", do-able, to some extent. Not as much as we'd like.

Maybe that Facebook guy and his buddies/bros should've finished their degrees....

I could think of a few like that.
