I’m sorry, but it’s p-o-t-a-t-o-e. Thanks.

D.Q.

You seriously just made me feel old.

Every week/month we find out that either email or social media outlets are shockingly careless when it comes to the data of the user. At the most a multi-billion dollar entity gets hit with a fine that is like them handing out a $20. Maybe we should all stop using their services and see how they are affected? Nobody NEEDS FB.

No offense, honestly, but every time there’s a huge leak, bust, or criminal conspiracy uncovered at this social shyster (or even something as minor as helping an opposing foreign intelligence service to dismantle American democracy), someone screams “We should probably stop using the dirty con artists!”

At this point, however, if you still use FB and are unable/unwilling to find a workaround, who are you? If you’re over 60, fine, you get a pass. You’re good. I might even see you at the Black Eyed Pea later. But WHO still needs (or worse, *wants*) to use Facebook? Come on. Get it together! lol

This toxic political reality that we’re all living in, that is poisoning EVERYONE somehow, some way—this is Facebook’s biggest legacy. They made it possible through utterly negligent behavior fed by the worst unchecked greed. Don’t support what they did by giving them your time and information.

The size and compartmentalization of big companies is likely a contributing factor to the problem. It's not a small intimate development shop where developers work together are invested in putting their best foot forward. Likely, it was a team in some dusty backyard building where developers only cared about churning out a working system for Instagram, quality and care aside. As the team changed, this logging of passwords was forgotten and never corrected, until someone stumbled across it one day.

You realize there are 10’smof thousands of companies that have NEVER lost a password or compromised an account? They’re called banks. The profile info is your “account balance.” If a company cares enough, the technology is clearly there. FB has no legitimate argument given the money they’re *still* making off old people and dumb young ones.

Hahaha! Tell me it ain’t so! FB with data compromised... AGAIN! Too funny.

It beggars belief that a company the size of Facebook can allow these problems to manifest. I guess they have problems attracting the best engineering talent. Who on earth would want to work for Facebook if your skills allow you to take your pick for similar roles elsewhere?

Computer Science today is not being taught as it used to be. Software built on frameworks full of bugs. It's scary once you know this by first hand observation.

I've never been a user of Facebook personally, and only had an account so I could manage my clients' business pages and advertising accounts. This morning I sent an email to all affected clients notifying them I was no longer providing this service and that I would be removing myself from the Facebook platform entirely effective the end of this month. I can no longer even passively participate in good conscience.

Very well done!

What a joke of a company. They obviously have no regard for security or privacy and have a long history of sneaky behavior. I abandoned Facebook a couple of years ago and am glad I did. Pathetic!

same story, told a billion times
FB and instagram fans will say
it doesn't matter, you guys are paranoid and over reacting
I don't have nothing to hide
lol

well I honestly don't like being hacked and spied on
for that I will also use windows
what's the worse it can happen, right

having your identity stolen is no joke
you will have to spend a lot of money trying to get everything fix
I personally wound't like to go through that but some people are just knuckleheads and think life is a big joke
that will never happen, yeah ok, until one day it does

they technically use the same user name and password for every web site

I can only speak for myself , I personally don't like social media
so I stayed away, on top of that I also know is insecure and not worth the risk
I don't like people up in my business either
the less people knows about me, the best
but not everyone is the same and there are people that are all the opposite
they post a picture before they eat

what has to happen for these companies to be shut down for good
I think the government knows what will happens if you shut them down

massive hysteria
this generation can't survive without their social media non sense

I understand Facebook has made many mistakes, but lately the media seems to be trying so hard to destroy Facebook.
FB is doing an outstanding job destroying themselves
really do you think that we are attacking FB
do you think they need a pass, this is some serious stuff, is not good to be negligent when it comes to data and privacy
there is no excuse, I think they been doing this on purpose ,because they already sold all that data
so what is the best way that the don't be punish because they did it themselves
well say someone else did it and it was out of our hands, there is nothing we could it done

unacceptable excuses
here is a doze of reality, you don't need FB , FB needs you
you know what your account means to them = money
but as long as people keep giving excuses, oh but all my friends and all my family are in FB
I need FB for this reason and for that reason

well I don't need FB for many reasons
if I try to tell someone something and they don't want to listen
well after I said it once and saw the person attitude then I won't say it again
I never try to convince people, if they want to fall, let them fall, they will never learn until they fall
then when they come crying to tell you what happened to them
that told you so is going to feel very good

What happens with these massive privacy breaches? They mention it, sometimes when they are forced to months later. No penalties. How about the breach itself? Do they owe us, the stolen goods, something? No. What do they do after these exposures. If the data was used to steal from your account, do they owe you something? Doubt it. Prove it came from them. What money DO they make from these incidents? They sell you credit services.
We need a real data law. Lose any of my money? You owe me my balance, plus interest. Lose any of my data, so I start getting bizarre sales calls, and worry, and you owe me for my data and damages. No, keep the damn credit services. Restore my credit to where it was.

Lots of passionate responses here. All that happened is they accidentally logged passwords from incoming requests or something. It's not some evil plot. GitHub had the same screwup and notified users of it.

exactly my point , i mean no disrespect but some people are just too naive and they trust these companies too much

you can present all the prove, states all the facts and they will refused your case

why? because they have a big problem letting go

they can’t live without their precious FB and they will come out with any kind of justification and they will defend the company that is doing them wrong

so the only ones that are to blame is themselves, FB is taking advantage of you but it seems that they like being tortured, used and abused

no problem i’m perfectly happy without having to use any of those services

so who ever got their data stolen or sold, they deserved

even if it was an accident, which i doubted, is totally unacceptable, is not the first time that this happens either, but if tolerate a company to do that with your data, i have no problem

If this was any other company, it would have been the end of them the first time. I actually think by this point, Facebook is too big to fail. So many website and companies these days use it as the main, if not the only way of registering an account with them. The only way it will change is if a company like Apple puts it's money where it's mouth is, and say that due to countless privacy violations, they are withdrawing all Facebook apps from the App Store.

When it comes to Facebook, i'm not surprised about anything anymore. I won't be surprised if we find out Whatsapp doesn't do end-to-end encryption anymore post Facebook acquisition.
