Remember when some of us who had TheFacebook in college said opening it up to everyone would ruin it and was a terrible idea? Turns out we were right...

Lol... true.

But honestly... how long would it have existed if it had remained solely a college messageboard? It had a pretty limited scope back then.

Facebook was college-only for just its first two years... while it has been open to the general public for the last 14 years.

Clearly Mark had bigger plans for it. It probably wouldn't still be around today if it was still the old "thefacebook"

Which was exactly one of the comments from the FB employee (and mine if anyone's keeping track, ha): "what's the problem with Facebook NOT whining about giving users the choice about being tracked? Why can't it be positively advertised that allowing cross site tracking will give relevant ads, and allow the user to make the choice. It just makes it look like what we do at Facebook is wrong and we think it's better to hide it from people"
It's got to be hard, trying to keep the sheep ignorant so they don't get too spooked and revolt.

Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland away
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air
You better watch out
There may be dogs about
I've looked over Jordan and I have seen
Things are not what they seem.

What do you get for pretending the danger's not real
Meek and obedient you follow the leader
Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel
What a surprise!
A look of terminal shock in your eyes
Now things are really what they seem
No, this is no bad dream.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to lie
Through pastures green he leadeth me the silent waters by
With bright knives he releaseth my soul
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places
He converteth me to lamb cutlets
For lo, he hath great power and great hunger
When cometh the day we lowly ones
Through quiet reflection and great dedication
Master the art of karate
Lo, we shall rise up
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water.

Bleeding and babbling we fell on his neck with a scream
Wave upon wave of demented avengers
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.

Have you heard the news?
The dogs are dead!
You better stay home
And do as you're told
Get out of the road if you want to grow old.

Quoted from Apples website

“Tracking refers to the act of linking user or device data collected from your app with user or device data collected from other companies’ apps, websites, or offline properties for targeted advertising or advertising measurement purposes. Tracking also refers to sharing user or device data with data brokers”

Apple has or is going to implement the ability for us to disallow the above quoted practice is what is going on right? Facebook is unhappy with that we users can now opt out of? Where btw can I opt out? I don’t see it in settings and its clearly not working.

I played Lego Star Wars on my iPad a couple weeks ago. I then go to the YouTube app. THE VERY FIRST AD was one for a Lego Star Wars set. A random app should never have the ability to see what I do in another apps. Apps shouldn’t communicate with each other!!!

Facebook! This isnt about small businesses!

I stop using FB years ago because of their practices.
I did too, and now people look at me like I have three heads. 'You're not on Facebook? *GASP*' As if I'm suffering from a mental illness. I quit MySpace too. I have a Twitter account, but only to see what's going on in the world. I block people like a possessed Ninja. The obnoxious BS that I got while on FB. People stalking me from group to group to 'own me'. The people that just HAD to friend me, and then ignored me was hysterical.

Facebook was created with a negative purpose, and it reinforces that with everything they do. Their messaging could have been so much more positive, and genuine. Hiding behind 'small business' is as nauseating as hiding behind the flag, or the cross. Facebook was the 'cool kids' making their clique high tech. It's still a sad cesspool of everything wrong with humanity. Sure, it has its positive uses, but it's far outweighed by the sniping stalking raging lying...

Isn't Facebook kind of like the drug dealer that called the cops because he/she got robbed of the drugs? Facebook can go away and be forgotten in no time.

This is REALLY interesting. It shows that the lack of awareness in Facebook seems to be at the top, rather than the employees themselves. It makes you wonder what kind of things are put forward as ideas from employees and middle managers, which are then cut by the top brass.

Are Facebook capable of being less evil if you replace the top? This suggests there is hope for that.
This is a problem with companies. All they care about is profits. Its what is hurting CDPR right now with Cyberpunk when devs have stated the game was not ready for release yet they did so anyway to get the holiday sales numbers. And look how well that game is going. Investors are starting to look into class action lawsuits now! Devs stated they spoke with management that the game was not ready, people are getting refunds. Yay for release the game for Christmas sales, but they probably would have gotten more sales if they waited for a better game. We might never know how much money they will lose from refunds.

Of course Apple cares about profits first, but at least from their actions and corporate ideas that they are TRYING to be privacy focused. This is a good thing. Say what you want about the pricing of some of Apple's products, but if they are truly the one of the few that really helps in privacy, I think that's worth even an extra $1,000+ on items! Good behavior should be rewarded. Secure Enclave, privacy labels, sign in with Apple that hides your email, Apple Pay, Safari tracking reports and many more things are evidence that Apple is trying to help with privacy.

I am oft more critical of Apple than most here, however when it comes to privacy Apple is one of the few companies you can be reasonably confident of to keep your private stuff, well private. I wouldn't use the word trust, because let's face it, it is a commercial company and what doesn't suit its business needs today may change tomorrow.

As far as FaceBook is concerned, it should wither and die. It's management should be charged at the ICC for crimes against humanity.

Not the best example, even if you are right. Devs always say it's not ready. And they never are. That's part of the problem. Because there is ready and there is ready. As in, there is ready as in good enough for release and there is ready as in the devs feel they are done. The latter only exists in some imaginary world with pink unicorns flying in the skies. The former is something management always tries to get a feel for, but rarely get a straight answer on from devs. So management tries to make an informed decision. Sometimes they get it sorta right, other times, they get it horribly wrong.

They knew it wasn't ready by preventing reviewers on PS4 and Xbox from using gameplay footage. Sony pulled the game from Playstation store which from my knowledge and many others has never happened in the history of gaming. Devs pulled Arkham Knight from Steam, that is the closest example of this happening but Steam did not pull it. All these things add up. Its a ridiculous mess and people are making excuses for CDPR and they should not be excused. I am so sick of Windows, macOS, programs, games and more release in buggy situations. Windows has a pretty big bug going on now where Check disk is causing a lot of problems.

If Sony pulls your game, you know it clearly was not ready. And devs said it wasn't ready, and investors are getting irritated looking for lawsuits, and refunds are going on Xbox too extending their refund policy.

Yes, but it's the managers who take the bad decisions and usually destroy good companies.
Correction: it’s executive ego that destroys good (and bad) companies. Managers are powerless - stuck either carrying out executive marching orders they may not agree with, while their teams look to them for answer they don’t have, or they are out of work. And when those companies eventually crumble, who pays the price? Hint: it’s not the execs: they’re legally and contractually protected. Everyone below them will suffers their poor decisions. It’s a tragic failure of a Corp America built on military rank and file structure and a reflection of that which is eroding the US. Where only a handful of people are untouchable, corruption can be found.

Through this software update (which I applaud), Facebook is revealing their true colors - at least for a staggering number of people that somehow missed it. And their business practices will eventually cost middle management (and below) their jobs and livelihood. But Zuck’ll be fine. He’ll morph into the next phase of evil. And so it goes...

Years from now I wonder how Facebook’s handling of this issue will be viewed in terms of corporate blunders.

Yes this is spot on what I was referring to that this is a major issue with businesses in general. Which is why I applaud Apple for attempting to do so many privacy focused things.

"That's Apple's marketing convincing you to scapegoat us..." No, it's common sense that a fifth grader would understand.

It's increasingly clear that the marketing guys at Facebook, or someone above them, just doesn't get it. As one Facebook employee suggested, it would make more sense to incentivize users to opt in rather than to pretend that users are better off if they don't know / can't choose whether they are being tracked.

I hear you, but it is a mathematical impossibility to have bug-free software when a piece of software exceeds a certain level of complexity. And most software these days, let alone operating systems, exceed that threshold quite easily.

I work with devs. Very rarely you can get a straight answer out of them on their readiness. There is always stuff left to do before it is ready. And when that is done, there is other stuff. Only with very direct unambiguous questions on very specific criteria can you get a feel of where they really are. Often only after you force a yes/no answer. Line management should have/get this answer. How the line manager kicks this up the tree should reflect his confidence in his team as well as his ability to keep his team protected from unobtainable projections and deadlines. The line manager should never ever report up the answer upper management wants to hear. If they do, bad things happen. What upper management decides would hopefully align with reality, but also see @lazyrighteye post.

it looks like Facebook employees only work there for $ knowing the company sucks. if you look at glassdoor facebook provides a lot of great benefits to its employees but no one seems to love the mission . just the benefits and $

Facebook is beyond the pale and one day I’ll be around to tell people yep I signed up at the start of it and stayed until the end when it was carved up like a modern Standard oil wannabe.

The problem we all face today, is that there is a huge number of people who are too ignorant to realize the lies that Facebook is telling and would rather just keep things as is, because to them ignorance is bliss. It would be one thing if they were simply using their customer’s data to serve up targeted ads, but to secretly track users through other apps is more like malware, than a service.

True, but they are the opt-inners. “STOP THE PRIVACY”. Nyuk, nyuk

A handful of comments unbalanced by not being able to see the entire feed. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, at least FB let their employees have one. I am pretty sure if it was Apple people would be fired for comments like this from their employees, that really is the type of company they are when it comes to protecting their brand.

No, not a fan of Facebook, it's a cancer and I don't use it.
Weird, simply weird. No Facebook? Full disclosure, I don’t either
