Silicon Alley Insider reports that Facebook Chief Technology Officer Bret Taylor noted yesterday that he is "very confident" that his company will reach a deal with Apple for collaboration on the music-focused social networking platform built into iTunes 10.
At a dinner with New York media last night, Facebook CTO Bret Taylor said he is "very confident" Facebook and Apple will figure out a way to work together on Ping, Apple's music social network.
Apple and Facebook were reportedly locked in negotiations for at least 18 months before Apple launched Ping earlier this month. Ping debuted with Facebook Connect integration allowing users to find friends via their Facebook accounts, but the feature quickly disappeared. A subsequent report claimed that the two companies had been unable to reach a deal for the usage of Facebook Connect but that Apple had gone ahead and deployed the functionality anyway. After Facebook disabled Ping's access to Facebook Connect, Apple was forced to remove evidence of the functionality from the service entirely.

The two companies have reportedly continued their negotiations, but no agreement has apparently yet been reached.

Facebook Connect support would be nice, but I'm not so sure if even that is enough to save Ping. There's way too much wrong with it now to be effective. They need to rethink the way Ping works. There's a lot of potential there, but it's coming up short...

Facebook account suspended, Ping completely ignored, I am set for the future and I am just about to call some friends about going to Paris for the weekend. No smartphones, no texting, no social media... We'll get the Eurostar and have our hotel pre-booked. Otherwise, it will be as it was 1995.

I would care a whole lot more about ping, if I actually got my music from itunes ;) instead i get all my music from youtube.

I just want to hide the Ping option in my sidebar. I don't have an account, I don't want an account, so screw off. Unfortunately, Apple seems determined to force all of their worst ideas down our throats.

Hopefully there's a group out there right now working very hard to build a Mac music player that doesn't actually suck and isn't continuously devolving.

I'd actually use Ping if it was attached to Facebook. Essentially everyone I know uses Facebook and I wouldn't mind having the integration.

Ping may be a stupid concept but many people are still going to use it, there's a sucker born every minute right.

Lets see what the future bears...

There is a lot of naysayers on this subject, I myself am on the fence.

I'm not big into social networking, but if I happen to be on Facebook and there is a ping link that automatically tells me that one of my pals is listening to something I never heard before, I might want to check out the 30 second sound bite to better understand their taste in music and to see if they have picked up onto something I have missed.

Right now, I don't have enough pals in Ping so it is currently not of too much value. If my Ping link went up to my Facebook site, pals may say, "what is that" check it out, then register their own Ping account.

Once the system hits critical mass, it may take off.
Earth shattering? No!, Marketing hype for iTunes sales? Heck yeah! Can it still be of value? I think so, but that is MHO.

cheers

Very nice. It's the kind of integration Ping needs.

LOL at everyone saying "I hate Facebook", etc. You should also put a disclaimer there that says "I don't understand the market." Facebook is absolutely huge, wildly popular, with uses that go far beyond status updates about where you'll be partying on Saturday. Either way, it's quite an opportunity for Apple. Try to see it for what it is, rather than confining your vision to your three feet of personal space.

I agree but it is a generational thing. I have zero interest in FB or Ping but love most stuff Apple does. So I will hope it all makes AAPL go up in the long run.

i like Ping. I do. its simple and it lets me be social with music. The facebook part would be cool as my friends can then find me easier and we can follow each other. I never post on Facebook becuase....who crares how my day went. But if you hear d a great new song or album...I care about that!

I have a Facebook account I visit once a week or so. My wife checks hers twice a day.

I have no interest in Ping. Both my home and work computers are still running iTunes 9.2.1 and will be until I'm forced to use the new version. At that point I'll run whatever Terminal commands are needed to turn off Ping just as I've disabled the Genius and most of the other "features" in iTunes.

Someone gave me an iTunes gift card that I loaded into iTunes before learning that Canadians can't use them to buy apps so eventually I'll break down and buy some music from Apple. I'm a lossless guy at heart and 90% of my collection doesn't even have artwork available through iTunes so most likely I'll be buying for my pre-teen daughter. Having some stupid "genius" or "social" feature recommending more music like that is the last thing I want!!

i dont care too much i dont use facebook, i have a ping account but dont use it, i dint want to get sucked in to the black hole witch is facebook

i hate both

Well, stop the presses, then. Goobot doesn't like Facebook or Ping.

You are in the minority on at least the former, although probably part of the vocal apparent majority on the second.

I don't particularly care for Ping because it isn't very useful at the moment. I can't find any of my friends, and it's not clear how helpfully it recommends music I might like. Facebook integration, however, would take care of at least the former problem, and I know there are a lot of people who would like that.

In fact, if you don't use it, it doesn't affect you in any way any more than Ping being there in the first place. Even if you DO use it, you can still ignore the feature. There's no reason to complain about this.
