What the story is really saying...

Apple: tries to tell facebook how the deal is going to work

facebook: says no for 18 months

Apple: Okay we'll do this with out you and still be successful

Facebook : be my guest.

Apple Launches Ping with all its fanfare!!!!

Ping fails...

Apple: Hey facebook... we want to talk about what you want now.

facebook: Okay Apple... this is how the deal is.

Someone gave me an iTunes gift card that I loaded into iTunes before learning that Canadians can't use them to buy apps...

I'm pretty sure you can now. Canadians used to not be able to but I think that changed.

I don't use Ping because of it's focus on music, but I'd use the same social features if it was focused on Apps that my friends bought. Where everyone can rate how they like the app and what my friends are playing. I buy way more apps than music.

Ping may be a stupid concept but many people are still going to use it, there's a sucker born every minute right.

I guess I'm one of those suckers. I enjoy Ping, and will like it even more when I can attach it to my Facebook fan page.

So what. Who cares.

Agreed, why all the fuss.

I think both Ping and Facebook are stupid, IMHO.

I concur.

That there is.

i hate both

I do as well.

How on earth do people keep track of the constant privacy changes they put out? I see facebook as one "sneaky" company, you know like google.

me too.
I'm very interested in being able to tell what music my friends are buying, because I'm interested in their music taste, since its different from mine. If a good friend of mine rates an album really highly, I might want to check it out. If I can keep track of when the artists whose music I buy are touring my area through Ping, that will be extremely convenient for me, much more than subscribing to each one's newsletter and getting my inbox cluttered up, and certainly much more convenient then hearing about their concert in my city the day after it happened.
For all those reasons I will love Ping when it is implemented properly, and when all my friends and favourite artists are on there.
I am really excited about the potential of Ping, and I just hope Apple releasing it while it was only half baked (they couldn't get the approval of facebook and the music industry so they'd thought they try it on their own) doesn't turn everyone away from it. For true music lovers, Ping could be awesome

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Thank goodness! So important.

My question is if ping is integrated with facebook, what's the point of ping?? It's just a middle man. Why not just hook iTunes up to facebook for those who want it and call it a day? What is the point of ping? Dumbest idea apple has ever had, it's right up there with the apple III...

I totally agree.

You know, we should start a Facebook group called "Suckers for Ping."

Hold on... I just did. :D

Facebook page for "Suckers for Ping."

I'm sure the kids will all love this and Apple will make a mint.
But this is further proof of how my favorite COMPUTER company is moving away from me.
I'm not suggesting Apple should give a damn about me but i can't help but feel sad and a little bit betrayed having been an Apple fan, power user and evangelist for over 20 years.
Ping is puerile rubbish. :(

I'm all for this if it increases AAPL shareholder value.

:) :p :D

And therein lies the problem.
The banks and stock market rely on this kind of greed over substance to continue their rape of the world. How many times has a CEO used just this argument to justify all kinds of bad products, work conditions and dubious behavior?
Glad you're doing so well with AAPL..........

Ping is a ****** failure! Sorry to say... Apple needs to blow it open, it's just too restricted and uptight right now. Jesus Christ

Yes, I'm happy with my AAPL performance.

I have far more issues with the performance of my other investments. I'd like to e-mail those CEOs asking "Why don't you guys perform like Apple? And why are you getting paid so much? Steve Jobs' annual salary is one dollar."

:p

One day, I will count that in how many of your posts you go on about your bloody shares. It's just pathetic.

Meanwhile, the last time that I asked for evidence - any evidence - that you actually held shares, you didn't reply. Personally, I don't think you have any or even if you have, it's a very small number.

Actually, the more I think about it the more I think that you haven't got shares. But prove me wrong and then you can go on and on about holding those effing Apple stocks!

Silicon Alley Insider reports that Facebook Chief Technology Officer Bret Taylor noted yesterday that he is "very confident" that his company will reach a deal with Apple for collaboration on the music-focused social networking platform built into iTunes 10...

The two companies have reportedly continued their negotiations, but no agreement has apparently yet been reached.
If Apple and Facebook were close to a deal, this guy would have kept his mouth shut.

Apple's partners clam up real tight when there's a potential deal in the works. The fact that he's blabbing about it at some conference indicates that the two companies are nowhere near inking a deal.

This is like Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg saying six months ago that he hopes that the iPhone will come to Verizon. Translation: don't hold your breath.

For all we know, Taylor is trying to pump up his company's reputation before some Sand Hill VCs inject another round of mezzazine funding. The latter is far more likely than any sort of imminent deal with Apple Inc.

That seemed to have shut him up, it works every time! :D

for sure fb team is trying to suck the most money they can from Apple.
I'm not sure Steve will like that.

I hear you bro, there's gotta be a growing band of disillusioned macphiles out there.

Tragic isn't it? If you have a spare 5 mins flick through the first few pages of his posts and search "AAPL" OR "SHAREHOLDER" with cmd+F. Is there not a forum rule about spamming/double posting?

Enjoy Paris by the way dude, there's an autumnal heatwave in Sevilla where I'm currently trying to learn medical Spanish. FML!

Facebook Connect support would be nice, but I'm not so sure if even that is enough to save Ping. There's way too much wrong with it now to be effective. They need to rethink the way Ping works. There's a lot of potential there, but it's coming up short...

My take that this whole first shot of Ping is nothing but corporate Trojan Horse. That dinner in New York -- bet good money it was Japanese around midtown -- is part of a parlay for Facebook to show more than they want. Steve has been playing this game when Zuck was in diapers.
