I guess that's why I don't "hate" Facebook, all I use it for is keeping in touch with family; maybe a couple of groups. Don't see much reason to hate it besides privacy concerns, (in my opinion) since everything else on the Internet is essentially stalking you one more thing isn't going to matter.

Heh, yea... but I guess to explain some of the 'hate' is that it frustrates me that so many people use such a bad platform for many things that almost force me to use it too. For example, some services and companies use Facebook pages or groups to conduct their communication (in place of an on-site forum... when FB is pretty much the worst forum software ever devised!), or people put Facebook based comment systems on their websites/blogs, etc. It's kind of hard not to use it or have an account. And, then there are those friends who pretty much use it alone, so you have to be on it if you want to keep in touch.

It's a love/hate thing for sure. :)

It also uses your GPS even when you tell it not to, as does Messenger

I delete any app they ignores my background tasks and Location preferences.

But why are they able to do that? Why doesn't the iOS do what it's suppose to do? No background tasks for Facebook. No location services.

Never had it use location services when I set them to "never" or denied them when prompted in the beginning.

Apps are always going to take more battery than browser because the browser is much more limiting in what it can do. This shouldn't be a surprise.

It should be noted that while the browser takes less battery, it also uses more data, as it's not compressed in the same ways as the app optimizes.
Safari guzzles data with reckless abandon. If you are constantly on cellular, you'd appreciate this

BS. I hate Facebook in general, but this is BS. Especially with what you said with the Messenger app. I have monitored the Messenger app and it doesn't use your GPS without your permission.

Honestly, everyone, what's with the vitriol directed at Facebook? Is it just the popular thing to do these days? Doesn't mostly everyone still use it (and secretly like it)?

More importantly, does it really matter if someone likes it while someone else doesn't?

No, they are kind of becoming the modern-day Microsoft in terms of the effect on the industry. First, it's pretty poor technologically, so it tends to tweak me off a bit that so many are using it's forums and such for actual business purposes (so, to participate in things, I have to be there, but it's a bad experience). Second, they are pulling Internet wrecking baloney like the 'free' Internet stuff in India. Third, their privacy record is horrible. Fourth, they are a walled garden... much of what is posted there isn't really on the Internet (more like AOL or CompuServe than a website).

So, I use it, yes... but I certainly don't like it!

One of the worst iOS apps ever. Deleted it years ago and never looked back. Using safari is way better.

The problem I have with using Safari to access Facebook is that the letter size does not auto adjust to the letter size used on the iPhone. That makes it very hard to read.

Count yourself lucky that you can uninstall the Facebook app on the iPhone.

On my Galaxy Note 5, it's baked in and it cannot be simply uninstalled. For most users, it will run in the background and track stuff like your location, even if you have not opened the app itself. You can stop the visible processes, but it updates often and then they all go back to running again.

Why does the Facebook app stink so much, and all the time? Don't they do an update like once every two weeks, and the app STILL stinks. I think it's time for Facebook to face lift their site and re-build their mobile app from the ground up.

Since Facebook sticks, why would you expect the app to be any better? :)

How is it poor technologically? What are you looking for it to do? It's a social-based website and I think it does a good job of that!

Maybe that was a poor choice of words, as I suppose what I see as broken about it is intentional (that said, consider the recent iOS app news, so maybe it's technologically poor too!). In terms of use as a forum, it's very hard to interact with past topics, and is designed so that if you're not actively engaged in the conversation, moment to moment, it is hard to participate.

Aside from the fact that much of someone's user base is probably already there with an existing account, it's about the worst forum-like platform there is. The only reason people are using it, is that it's free and the people are already there (i.e.: lazy).
