Since iOS 16.0.1 Facebook has like 8+ hours background hog on the battery and nothing can stop it. It’s a big pain and we all know this was a bug many years ago that Facebook had to address.

It literally takes my iPhone 14 Pro Max from 100% to 45% sitting idle on the table for 4-5 hours.

UPDATE:

Deleted Facebook and battery life since then has been stellar. iMessage/Photos finally finished indexing as well a few days ago (since everything is on-device that takes forever for 800GB photos) and it’s been great since!

Weird. I’m running the public beta of 16.1, so maybe that’s the difference, but I just checked, and the Facebook app has only used 3% of my usage in the last 24 hours. That’s pretty normal for me.

That should be the case. I only see this since 16.0.2 on iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Use website instead. Look over users review of Messenger in App Store to face how crappy apps they make.

Looks like a bug, but freezing messenger while typing a message is their biggest problem now :)

Have you tried disabling background app refresh for the FB app? I noticed unusual behavior a few nights ago as well as the notice that my phone was too hot to charge above 80% wirelessly. Once I disabled background app refresh for the FB app, it went back to normal.

I've always had BG app refresh turned off, and I still get this problem. Even with the app force closed I'm still getting background usage.

I have it also on my iOS 16.1b2 devices. It is also happening on iOS 15 as well, since I have not upgraded my wife’s iPad and phone yet. It must be an issue with their latest app update.

I’m glad I’m not alone. I have used it for 30 mins since taking it off the charger today. Background shows 16 hours. I downloaded friendly on App Store but do not get notifications no matter how often I toggle it on and off within the app. Annoying for sure.

Close the app and don't use until FB updates it

Same. I've deleted the app for now. My replacement is using Facebook's mobile site. You can add it to the home screen so it functions like an app.

I'm guessing it'll be fixed soon, but in the meantime I'll be using this "workaround"
Will do this too now. Tired of it.

I deleted the Facebook app and will wait till they fix this.

Right now I’m just accessing Facebook through the Brave browser which I download just for Facebook to keep it’s tracking cookies separate from my normal web browsing.

The big question is what is it doing to use so much battery in the background? Is it using GPS? I have GPS turned off, but I also have background app refresh turned off so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s somehow getting around other permissions.

Okay, in that case, I would remove the app. The FB app has always been known for getting around Apple's privacy mitigations anyway. Probably better off. I know it is a lot easier to use the app if you use the service bug given the circumstances, I would remove it.
