I, for one, thank Facebook for the "opportunity to discover experiences" directly on my Home tab. Between browsing the web, watching television, and driving on the highway, I definitely don't spend enough of my life "discovering experiences". Facebook genuinely understands that we don't want our apps to do what we want them to do- we want to experience consistent delays that keep us from using our apps as we intended to use them.

Wow. Time to remove Messenger. I need a platform for messaging that I can use with my family (Android) whereas I use iOS.

You had no problem using Facebook for free. Someone’s gotta lay the bills. Too many selfish and self centred people today who think everything should be free.

"Free"

Meh.

I open Messenger when someone sends me a message... or I open Messenger to send a new message.

I don't spend all day in Messenger.

So I don't see how this is that big of a deal.

They make the ads sound amazing and something to be excited for. Glad I don't use Facebook.

I completely agree. That's why I seek out paid services. Every free service you use is making money off you somehow. Either selling your privacy and or producing ads to you. Not worth price of free for me. But others don't mind. I like the idea of privacy. So no for me. When I learn Facebook was selling your data I got off of immediately years ago.

Now you can't get away from the ads in messenger. Pretty soon, ads will be popping up in message conversations.

Well then let me know what the price is and if I agree to the price I will be happy to pay for it. When FB offers it for free and I accept it and then FB decides that they will determine my worth and place ads on something that they previously gave me for free I have every right to go somewhere else or use a different product.

If FB wants me as a consumer then they have to take the positive and the negative. FB can't have it both ways and that is exactly what you are arguing for.

The price? You aren’t the customer. A consumer, yes, but not a customer. You’re the product. Your information is sold to advertisers. They’re the customers.

You have no rights and they don’t have to do anything.

Deleted my account from Facebook and all Facebook Services (except for WhatsApp, ugh!) 4 years ago, never looked back.

Well, that's unfortunate.

I think it's time to once again think about deactivating my FB account.

Why did you post a screenshot from Android? Post the permissions necessary to use FB Messenger on iOS, given that this is primarily a forum for Apple users.

"Home screen ads in Facebook Messenger, which have been in testing in Australia since January"

I thought Facebook had been particularly irritating this year.

Can these be turned off?
I found these instructions on Macworld, I think this might get rid of the ads but haven't tried it yet. Let me know if it works:

Deleting apps on an iOS device is simple: Just tap and hold any app icon until all the icons start wiggling. You’ll notice that many, if not most of them, have a little X at the top left corner. (The ones that don’t have the X are default apps that are part of iOS; you can’t delete those.)

To delete an app, tap the X, then tap Delete in the dialog the displays. Note that doing so deletes not only the app, but also all of its data. So if you think you’ll need an app again soon, and you have stored data, settings or completed levels for it, you might want to think twice before tapping that X.

Still a lot on iOS. Worse on Android though.

What you don't understand is that you're not the Consumer. If you don't pay anything, you're not a customer. Facebook's customers are the businesses that pay to run ads, you're the product. If you're not ok with that, then good luck finding any free website that continues to add value to your life for free forever without selling your eyeballs to someone who will pay for them.

This isn't any surprise. Facebook, Twitter, Google... they need to make money somehow and if you want a free service, you have to give up something of value to their actual customers.

Well, exactly. Nothing is free. You don't pay Facebook with money, so you have to provide value to the ones who do pay Facebook good ol' hard earned cash.

“This doesn’t affect me personally therefore it’s not a problem”

Pretty much. I'm all right, jack balls to everyone else. Cult of me. Capitalism is king. God Bless America. #sarcasm

Joking aside, you're are right mate and I should have been kinder to the billions of exploited Facebook users who are just realising they are products not customers.

I stopped using Facebook as a messaging platform when they mandated the app on mobile. At some point Zuck et al, might do something that's a bridge too far and his dog **** empire will come crashing down around him.

Well, a guy can dream

This is a bit over the top..

Ads in the browser OK, maybe ads in the app, but ads in conversation I'm not feeling that
