What moron sells all their personal data for at most $20/month. Good lord people are dumb

This notion gets recycled every few years. I'm not sure how I feel about having worked on this (failed) one:

https://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/1998/04/13/240866/

a.k.a. "that time I was deposed by David Bois"... (who prosecuted United States vs. Microsoft, and who was charming, BTW. It was a friendly deposition...)

PowerAgent promised to pay consumers for viewing ads. As I recall, the expected payout was to be something like $20. But this was 1998. If you were Bill Gates, or Steve Jobs, the expected payout would have been more. ;)

FWIW, part of my job was dealing with some of the technical details that insured that collected data would be both anonymous and transparent to the user. (The is, the user could discover what information was collected.)

Privacy is dead on iPhone
No it's dead, at least Apple tries unlike Google and Facebook(the worst one) who data mine you. This artcile shows that Facebook did not learn from its mistake. The facetime bug is going to be fixed in a week(pretty fast by industry standards), while google knew of the google+ bug for years before shutting it down.

Iphone is not all secure, but is the most secure OS.

Do you think they package it that way? They make it sexy, where it's "you're helping" or someone might actually not think that they don't have anything to worry about.

In fact, if you are incentivised by $20, it's unlikely you care about privacy because you have other more pressing issues.

Wow, the depths to which this evil empire and its boss will sink knows no end; the only people more evil are those paying facebook tp use the data for their ends.

Creep, peeping tom - and making money from it, a pimp; Zuckerberg.

Can anyone start a boycott list of people who advertise on Facebook - the revenue stream he smugly told the Congress was his source of income?

Yes, they make their money from data.

Wow, when will people realize how truly evil Facebook really is.

Apple should make an example of them and ban their app, at least temporarily.
$50 On people still using Goog products after FB ruins itself.

A moron who's smart enough to reactivate an old iPhone as a "burner" on a cheap prepaid plan and fill it with useless data and pocket $20/month. I think TMO has a very cheap $3-5 prepaid plan. And because iPhones use iMessage, you won't lose out on the limited text amount or minutes. Netting $15 a month may not seem much, but when you're doing it and screwing over Facebook by submitted dud data, then it's somewhat clever. $180/year for doing practically nothing isn't bad.
You are really reaching here, buddy. o_O

I could see them offering people money to keep them on the platform. People will settle for pennies on the dollar of what it's worth to Facebook to sell ads on their platform to marketers.

Under Steve Job's leadership, Apple made a huge decision to NOT support "Flash" content on their mobile devices saying it was inefficient and a resource hog. This is so so much worse. How can Tim Cook and Apple support this? Apple is probably the only hardware/software company big enough to actually be effective at not only condemning Facebook unethical practices but doing something about it. Come on Tim, show some guts.

I can’t stand Facebook. So glad I dumped them 5 years ago. I wish Apple would dump their enterprise app as well as their regular app to get the point across.

Lots of well founded ire against Facebook. But keep in mind that Google has everything that Facebook is trying to get and much much more, when people give up their privacy and use any Google products, especially Android.

Just another reason why big investors favor Facebook over Apple. Zuckerberg will do anything for profits while Tim Cook only goes but so far. Data harvesting is extremely profitable and Facebook knows most consumers don't have concerns about privacy or security. Getting paid for giving away your security and privacy is icing on the cheesecake.

Delete Facebook!
Not going to happen. Most consumers don't care what companies due with their data as long as they're getting some free social or media services. Besides, most consumers are completely addicted to social services and need their daily fix.

Never use Facebook! Call your congress person and ask them to enact legislation to stop companies from tracking people unless they opt in to it.

Isn't this that basically--people opting in by their own choice?
