All iOS/tvOS apps are cesspools of user tracking and data harvesting. If you have the ability to watch your DNS traffic, you will be astonished at the garbage Tim thinks is perfectly okay. I refuse to use any network where I don't control and block malicious DNS requests myself.

If you don't know how, set up pi-hole. You don't need any hardware just to see for yourself. Just install it in Parallels or similar, and launch your favorite apps. iOS is only successful as a platform because of the amount of user data stolen by tracking & advertser brokers.

That's all this vpn app from Facebook is: DNS & traffic harvesting.

How is that again? iOS data mines AND sells!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

*breathes in*

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

As part of this process, Onavo collects your mobile data traffic. This helps us improve and operate the Onavo service by analyzing your use of websites, apps and data. Because we're part of Facebook, we also use this info to improve Facebook products and services, gain insights into the products and services people value, and build better experiences.

I am crying laughing

**** yeah. I'd love to see an Apple vs Facebook fight. Would really put FB in their place. I don't have a problem using their services but would never put their native code on any device I own if I can avoid it.

Hey man, I'm just trying to find roommates and stuff in the groups. And also message my friends. It's very useful.

Maybe that's why everything seems to be getting more and more resource-intensive every year.

Massive privacy violations is exactly what everyone predicted would happen when it was revealed that Facebook was making a VPN. This is just one of those no-brainers.
Worse, they also make a free ISP for poor countries. Except it got banned in India for reasons you might guess: this ISP only works with Facebook and select other sites. I'm sure it's harvesting like their VPN does.

This.

Pi-hole is awesome and, yes, the amount of analytic domains apps phone home to is appalling.

Yeah, that thing is a virus. It literally creates societies in emerging markets that think Facebook to be THE internet, and thus extremely susceptible to hoaxes and extremism that are plaguing Facebook (and Facebook turns a blind eye on those). It's really bad.
[doublepost=1534992142][/doublepost]I have uninstalled the Facebook app from my iPhone ages ago (when it is draining battery like there's no tomorrow). I flagged it as malware. Too bad Apple is still keeping that one in the store.

The worse part is coming though. Whatsapp just made a deal with Google to provide their users "free" backup (meaning their whatsapp backup won't be counted towards Google Drive storage quota. Now I'm sure Google won't just do that out of kindness.

After some of my friends got banned by sharing erotic pictures in Facebook Messenger, I believe that every service provided by Facebook is not private.

When a small developer does something like this, Apple removes the app immediately and tells them to fix it.

When Facebook does it, they wait several days for Facebook to "voluntarily" remove the app.

Seems fair...

Hey, don't protect the users from the very issue you made this policy for, just go ahead and let everyone keep using the app for several more days so Facebook can keep collecting the data.

Apples new policy since June is a big step in the right direction from allowing third parties from obtaining our information that we never gave permission to. Thank you Apple.

this is getting ridiculous , this should be a crime and they should put all this people behind bars
I like what they were doing when they had the facebook guy in the hot chair
but it seems it was just a smoke screen
this just invasion of privacy

the best solution is to not use none of those apps or services
I don't use or install none of that "social media" crap on none on my devices

don't trust anybody

how do I know that my personal information is secure
my bank information
how do I know if I'm a victim of identity theft

the government should do something about it
because this is straight up a criminal act

please shut down FB
I can't stand that guy, I don't like him and I don't trust him
how you think he got facebook
by stealing
the guy is a straight up thief and will sell anybody for money

A VPN made by Facebook.
One word : LOL

Is LOL really considered a word? Isn't LOL an acronym for 3 words: Laugh(ing) Out Loud

Facebook didn't make a VPN; They bought one. Facebook bought Onavo, an Israeli company, a few years back.

Glad to see Apple exposing FB for what they are.

Apple didn't really expose anything. Onavo openly states how the app works. It's just that people don't bother to read

"Onavo collects your mobile data traffic. This helps us improve and operate the Onavo service by analyzing your use of websites, apps and data. Facebook today removed VPN app Onavo Protect from the iOS App Store after Apple decided that it violates App Store data collection policies, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Apple earlier this month told Facebook officials that the Onavo app, which serves as a virtual private network, violates June App Store rules that prevent apps from harvesting data to build advertising profiles or contact databases.

Facebook and Apple met last week to discuss the Onavo app, and last Thursday, Apple suggested that Facebook voluntarily remove the Onavo app, which Facebook agreed to do.

Onavo, a free VPN, promised to "keep you and your data safe when you browse and share information on the web," but the app's real purpose was tracking user activity across multiple different apps to learn insights about how Facebook customers use third-party apps.

Whenever a person using Onavo opens up an app or website, traffic is redirected to Facebook's servers, which log the action in a database to allow Facebook to draw conclusions about app usage from aggregated data.

As of earlier this year, Onavo for iOS and Android had been installed on more than 33 million devices, giving Facebook a wealth of user data. Facebook was up front about the data collection in the app's description, but the data that was being collected is now above and beyond what Apple allows. It appears that the Onavo app has indeed been removed from the App Store at this time. People who have previously downloaded the app will still be able to use it, but it will no longer be updated. Onavo for Android will continue to be available.

Customers who have installed Onavo but do not want to be tracked by Facebook should uninstall the app from their iOS or Android device.

Update: Apple provided the following statement on the removal of Onavo: We work hard to protect user privacy and data security throughout the Apple ecosystem. With the latest update to our guidelines, we made it explicitly clear that apps should not collect information about which other apps are installed on a user's device for the purposes of analytics or advertising/marketing and must make it clear what user data will be collected and how it will be used.

People said the same thing about Verizon's VPN too. Even if they paid me I wouldnt switch from ExpressVPN to Onavo.

lol at people still using anything Facebook related.

You mean lol at over 2 billion people?
I don't get people like you! I am all for privacy and you can be as paranoid as you like, it is your choice. But you must realize that not everyone feels the same as you.

While not an iphone user anymore, this is the only thing that I'm missing. The continuous privacy protection improvement doesn't seem to be a fake from apple's side. They do seem to invest a lot on this subject, and it is getting more important everyday.

I'm criticising apple for many things, but they do well on privacy issues (or at least better than the competition).

But for the past 10 years we’ve been happy to let all app developers collect this info. Now that they have it we’ve decided going forward to protect the children. Sorry to all you suckers who went before...Farewell and thanks for all the fish - signed your friendly neighborhood Apple

No. It is because the Russian President and Zuckerberg said so.

They openly admit that their income is thru data peddling.

Beyond privacy (which doesn't exist anymore) it is about the fake news and propaganda through bots FaceBook allows even now.

third party apps bro

So, not Apple.

You can’t blame FB...blame the individuals using FB and/or the app.
If everyone tomorrow deleted their FB account.
1. No more FB bullying
2. No more FB privacy issues
3. No more FB stalking
4. No more wasting countless hours on FB “friends” to boost your sad ego.
5. And Mark well, screw him, he would just go away!

People using FB give FB the power!

And let go of the LOL comment...&$@!
