Most people are willing to have their data be shared as long as the service is free to use. And there are million of free services.

I'd wager most people don't know what that entails or the extent to which it's done.

It also seems to be that way deliberately.

"There is nothing more important to us than protecting people's information, and we will continue making improvements as part of our ongoing security efforts at Facebook,"

I'm sure whoever wrote this in the blog was rolling their eyes and laughing. If they really cared about the privacy of their users information we wouldn't be on this multi-year trail of oops sorry we did a bad thing again.

None of them let me keep in touch with my family and friends that live in other states or across the ocean, letting us share photos, memories and stories. I'm not looking for a way to meet new people and neither are my family and friends. We just want to stay in the loop with each other.

So instead of snark, maybe come up with a real, viable recommendation?

Monsanto has not killed millions of people. Christ almighty.
Maybe just to refresh your memory.

Check 4 & 7 for their top rating.
But I get what you are saying. Monsanto didn’t kill anybody, mostly the cancer did. Monsanto just did help the cancer.

And now when Bayer and Monsanto is merged, let’s add this as a bonus
https://worldtruth.tv/bayer-bought-concentration-camp-victims-in-wwii/

So, back to the post, yes Facebook is evil, but in a different sort of way.

I remember when i use to complaint about FB security
I was told that I was paranoid and over reacting
how about a plain text that anybody can read
from around 20,000 employees , I'm sure 1 or 2 took a look at it
anyone including FB employees can hack into your account, spy on you etc
or sell your info to the black market and people still haven't learned their lesson

I have never like FB from day one, I have a bunch of friends and family members telling me to create an account to keep in contact

If you want to keep in contact send a text message or an email
but I don't like social media
respect anybody who like it but I don't like it
why?
because I don't trust them, I can't have all my personal life and info stored on those servers
I like privacy and security, that's why I don't use or like FB

Is the news here that FB employees actually do have access to FB user accounts? Really?

I mean if this sort of access is not provided by passwords stored as plain text, then surely they also have the same level of access via their "admin" or "super-user" tools, built into the backend and they can easily see the full contents of any account they wish, without actually having to "log in" to said account?

So is the real concern that they can more readily share said access with a 3rd party? Because if somebody's willing enough to do that, he might as well have be willing enough to do that with the "super-user" tool and leaked the info out that way...

Anyway, and in conclusion, don't ever store ANYTHING truly personal with a company. More news at 11.

Yes, Google
Yeah, as much as I hate Google, I think Zuckerberg is worse. Google doesn't constantly lie about how many people are affected by various issues, and they aren't constantly trying to cover up everything. They seem a little more open about their business model. I by no means think Google is a good company. There are many bad things about them. But I just feel like FaceBook is on a completely other level. The way their platform has been instrumental in spreading fake information and the deals they make to sell user information is striking. Google plays less of a role in the social media space (perhaps not by their own choice) but by not being in that space they aren't leading to the downfall of our society the way that social media is tearing people apart and isolating us. FaceBook says they are connecting everyone but all they are doing is dividing.

Delete Facebook? Where are you going to go? Google+?

I deleted it and never looked back. Social media is toxic. I found that the people I actually care about I keep in touch with directly and the people I never really cared about anyway I don’t miss seeing online. People need to realize they don’t need social media and it is a net negative on their emotional state most of the time.

There is nothing more important to us than protecting people's information, ...”
This is so ridiculously clearly not true. It’s quite clear from their continuing pattern of actions that “protecting people’s privacy” is down around #937 on their list of what’s important to them.

Maybe text them the photos and videos. Call them. You know instead of giving facebook the rights to your personal pictures and videos.

I don’t understand why people find this annoying, yet they don’t mind to upload data to clouds, servers, websites, have their mobile devices connected 24/7 to the Internet with private data, etc, etc. I mean: if you play with firecrackers, you shouldn’t feel surprised when you hear their noise.

I read an article claiming 80% of app developers would store passwords in plain text and of the 20% that didn't only a third used an encryption that would actually safeguard against attacks. They were also trying to get you to take their encryption course, but interesting nonetheless.

It‘s getting better and better... I can smell the end of facebook already.
The problem is not Facebook: if it ended, people would find other servers/apps/devices to give their private life for free and forever. Of course, then they’ll shout loud when that service makes use of what they gave them for free and forever. There’s a serious education problem behind this.

You’re saying you can’t share pictures, memories and stories using iMessage, Signal, etc using group chats? We have a family group chat that works great. Why leave it up to some third party service who doesn’t care about your privacy? iMessage works great across oceans too.

Twitter also lets you communicate with family.

Man... You have a lot of time on your hands..
Consider my mind blown.

I’m calling BS on their “some users” claim, I’ve always assumed they were inflating their active user count and maybe this will end up proving it.

Seriously, WTF is wrong with this godforsaken company?! It has never understood the concept of user privacy and is continually apologising for supposed privacy mistakes.
While I appreciate the spirit behind your question, I’m afraid it has a simple, serious answer.

Facebook understands the concept of user privacy perfectly well, which is why they take every opportunity to erode it. For Facebook, privacy is an obstacle to be eliminated.

Remember, you are not Facebook’s customer; you are Facebook’s product. Their entire business is built on selling your private information to their true customers, who are corporate advertisers.

That, and the fact that Mark Zuckerberg is an amoral sociopath who considers the users who trust him “dumb f***s.”
