2 apps just defeats the whole "social network" aspect.

The reason FB messaging within the app works so well is one can be doing multiple things simultaneously. Clicking on the little popup heads works absolutely fine.

But having to go to a seperate app, then return back to FB and find my place again...it complicates the process, takes more time, reduces functionality.

If the new app was optional, I could see its value for those who just want to use messages, not the news feed etc.

Or if the integration and switching back and forth between the two was absolutely seamless and fast (i.e. a single button within each app) then I'd also accept it easily enough.

But it's not.

I, too, will not be downloading their Messaging app. I don't fully see the need to have two separate apps. Plus, the mobile site allows (at least for now) messaging and if I happen to get a message that I NEED to reply to right away and I am not at home, I will switch to that. My close friends who would talk to me most often have my phone number anyway.

In the UK this has resulted in Facebook messenger being the lowest rated app to stay in the top five of the app store... ever I think.

It's currently sat at 1.5 stars as users revolt.

You'd think Apple would have a quiet word. It doesn't make the app store look good for the top apps to be clearly hated by the userbase.

The app isn't that bad, but I would prefer to just use one instead of two. It's sometimes a pain to use two apps just to message someone, or for example if I would want to call someone overseas; I can't do it unless I call them via Facebook Messenger. What about the people who just don't want Facebook Messenger? I have a lot of friends on Facebook who surprisingly don't use the Messenger app and instead just use the Facebook app to send people messages.

Facebook is Facebook, not anymore.

So now I need 2 apps for a service I use maybe 4 times a month, and for events and messaging only... This is ridiculous. Not to mention how long it takes to open on my iPhone 4 already.

this is a europe thing about 2 months ago. i managed to avoid having up downgrade to the messenger app for a while but then it forced me to downgrade.

Ive got imessage for messaging. i dont use FB messenger unless one of my friends on FB messages me direct and they would be ones from another country where texting would cost stupid £$.

Facebook is generally getting worse and worse. They implement changes thinking its for the better but dont give a toss about their user base tbh.

- I dont want 2 apps when one worked fine.
- I dont want to be bombared by requests to review places of interest near me (i NEVER agreed to this or signed up to it. Everytime i receive one i simple rate it 1 star & write nonsense aimed at FB spamming me for reviews of places some ive never been to!

What i would like is for
- Facebook to actually update my newsfeed in a chronological order and not what it thinks i am interested in. Some info i dont receive because of this. (i can change to chronological order but have to do it everytime!)
The option to remove:
- Recommended pages
- Recommended people i may know
- requests for reviews
- recommended businesses near me (my location setting are disabled for FB to stop you tracking me!)

if it wasnt for having friends / relatives on the other site of the world i`d not touch FB as its really is a plague of the internet.

Web version is tons better anyways. They did this crap months ago where I live, so this really isnt news. I deleted the main app and started using the website. Havent looked back.

Multiple Accounts

I have multiple Facebook accounts. I log in the app with one account and use a browser for the other. Then I use Messenger to receive notifications of messages from the one logged into the browser.

It annoys me when the main app pushes me towards the messenger app. If they make it a requirement it will make things much harder to manage.

Apple could make this easier by enabling multiple users on an iOS device, but it doesn't seem like that's a feature coming any time soon. So it's up to the apps to allow multiple accounts.

With Twitter, I can quickly and easily bounce between accounts without having to log out and back in and I get notifications for both accounts. It'd be nice if Facebook would realize there are very good reasons some people have multiple pages/accounts.

This seems to be the new trend.

Foursquare did this as well, moving checkins to the Swarm app and removing a lot of the fun bits.

The result? I stopped using Foursquare completely.

Maybe I'll do the same with Facebook.

Oh, lovely. I guess that means I can delete Facebook and just use messenger now. Which means I won't see their sponsored posts or ads. So, good job, Facebook!

"We can't figure out how to branch development of the main features and the messaging feature, so we are going to create two separate apps."

- Facebook, a multi-billion dollar company led by the "brilliant" Mark Zuckerberg.

No it wasn't. Please post the date that you claim it was implemented. I can still message from within the app, even though I prefer the messenger app.

Yes, it was. I don't personally know the exact date this happened, but it's been this way for me for several months, if not a year. If I tap the Messages icon in the main app, I'm taken to the stand-alone messenger app.

I wonder if this move leaves Facebook vulnerable to someone else filling the void of a all-in-one social media app? There's Google+, but Google is the only company that I trust less than Facebook.

I completely agree!

I want to divorce myself from them, I recently changed my email.... I don't like how much of my info they make public, I changed my birth date to protect myself. "It's really a shame that companies use our birthday for security purposes!"

It should be a FUN day, a special day :(

Solution

Hi guys,

Solution:

1) Delete the FB app and the FB Messenger app
2) Access FB on your mobile with your favorite browser
3) From the mobile website, you can access FB and read messages. No need to install two apps. Just create a shortcut and it will be like an app.

Cheers!;)

Google is consolidating all its messaging services (and even Google Voice) into Hangouts.

And notifications?

There are no notifications, and I actually prefer it. It's a time saver, because now I only check FB two or three times per day :)

They should go oposit way, remove messenger app and improve it on main FB app. Having 2 apps is just wasting of space, and ram :(
Sad thing is that in Europe whatsapp is not as popular as in US, but ppl are using Facebook chat instead, so switch will be a bit painful ;/

Arent they doing pretty much that?

They already did this in the UK, quite annoying when it says you've got a message then opens up the messenger app.
