Deleted Instagram yesterday and Facebook has been gone for months. It took a bit of time to adjust (literally found myself opening my phone and swiping on the Home Screen pages mindlessly then locking it again.. scary how addicted you can get to your phone).

Sounds like when I quit smoking, even after the addiction went, the habit a muscle memory stayed around for a while. Took ages for me to stop checking my pockets for a lighter when leaving the house, before remembering I don’t smoke anymore...

It feels so refreshing to get out of social media. I have so much more time in my day now.

After watching The Social Dilemma, which I highly recommend doing, and reading more and more news like this, I am also seriously considering deleting Instagram - even though I'm quite enjoying it.

The WA guys left because of pressure to include advertisements. Overall I'd say Facebook is bad, but one silver lining is that WA has the "Signal Protocol" for its E2E encryption. That is a huge plus for privacy, considering how many people it now covers given the huge user base. Its no small thing when you consider many countries around the world will round up people who disagree with the government. Now these people can communicate with family and journalists safely. The downside is that Facebook will try to monetize your metadata. FB can't read the content of your WA messages, but can still tell alot about you based on your contact list and who/when you communicate with.
Or they could use Signal, which isn't affiliated with FB in any way.

I massively distrust Facebook but I do use Instagram, hypocrite that I am. The more they force "Facebook" down my throat as an IG user the more I realise that I can't pretend that it's not part of their ecosystem. I see the day approaching when I'll be, reluctantly, deleting IG.
Same. I don't want to leave IG but FB is determined to force me out.

I'm wondering if, since I had a linked FB and IG and then deleted my FB, if I'll even be able to access my IG messages anymore. I already can't update half my IG info because it tells me to update it on FB.

Any alternative to Instagram not linked to Facebook, Google, or any other big brother? Just for artistic or casual (or food) pictures
Flickr. It's no longer the Flickr heyday but they're trying hard to make a comeback.

So i turn on notifications for some users on Instagram.
If i have a bunch of Instagram notifications in my Notification Center on ios and get a DM on Instagram, ALL my Instagram notifications disappear.

does this fix that?

ive messaged Instagram support like that 5,000 times about it and they never fixed it

side reminder on the subject of FB messenger replacing the default messaging app:

if apple allows swapping out of the messages app and opens up that API to developers, devs other than FB can make a messages app with more features than the stock app.

aka meaning that people who actually care to make feature rich applications can take over and make a messages app worthy of anyone's time.

I was actually surprised by how little I missed Facebook and how quickly I stopped caring around it. I had been on FB since 2006 when only college students could join. I documented daily events with photos and thoughts for over a decade. But all it took was to remove the app. I instinctively reached for my phone to check it but having to download or go on Safari killed the urge. It didn’t take more than a couple of days to stop checking.

I do feel the same addictive attachment to Twitter, though unlike Facebook, I don’t want to stop using it. My solution to that is to leave my phone at home when going out to social events or walks with my dog. My Apple Watch, which I have an LTE account for, keeps me connected to the world via text, calls and with access to important work tools like my calendar and email, and access to the knowledge of the internet via Siri as well as music and podcasts. It doesn’t become a time sink like a phone that you pull out of your pocket to check something and end up staring at for an hour.

Apple Watch looks to be the antidote to the problem of constant staring at a screen that the iPhone created. Built into the concept of a small screen and of being attached to your arm, is by its nature not intended for long use. Raise your wrist for an interaction, and then put it down.

God damn I’m in your shoes as well. Hate Facebook but it’s pretty big here in Denmark so almost needed for a couple of groups. Instagram is my big drug and would love to cancel it

If I’m Facebook I wouldn’t want my spy algorithms having to work on two different apps. Makes sense to unify them.

💩 so no people on FB that I’ve avoided since 2012 can 1) search for me. 2) message me to they’re hearts content and 3) no security feature in IG to BLOCK them because they’re nOt using IG platform.

damnit!

💩

I can't wait for some program to come out and take down Instagram and kill it like how MSN, ICQ, Yahoo are dead.

Hmm.. I wouldn’t mind being able to “delete Facebook” while still keeping Instagram. I my use FB proper and FB messenger come across way more “evil” and cause a lot more anxiety.

So being able to keep some of the contacts from FBM through IG wouldn’t be the worst thing ever. Ig has already jumped the shark a bunch of times regarding feature creep. 😕

Amazing! This is something we don’t here often about.

I never got into the habit of them mostly out of laziness to understand them at the time they started coming out (especially twitter, Instagram, etc seemed redundant) but definitely felt some sort of dread and pressure when trying to really use them, sometimes a tacit weird competition, other times annoying and blatant attention seeking for the most minor unimportant events.

I’m glad that I don’t need them for the most part but still wonder what about people that have to rely on it as it’s a clear cut marketing platform.

Some people say that Facebook, Instagram, etc are also dating, job career, etc apps... as HR departments, that potential Tinder match, realtor evaluating offer/compatibility with the neighbourhood, etc will all go and scoop up whatever they can find on these social media fronts. Finding nothing is a red flag, finding too much is also a red flag.

I think most have to get out of the daily hustle first to be able to afford unplugging let’s say in at least 95%, as it is basically impossible to disconnect in full.

Not sure what that would really accomplish. Some were all too happy to see something like MySpace go, but then ended up with something like Facebook that they are also complaining about.

I am trying to accomplish:
Google Search->DuckDuckGo
Gmail->ProtonMail
Internet Explorer->FireFox
Whatsapp->Signal
Instagram->????

Just take the plunge and move to Telegram! Bring all your friends with you!

Signal...not Telegram.

Instagram --> PixelFed

There are several federated social networks out there. You just need to signup and get your friends on them:

All these "open source" and federated services are half baked more complex attempts. I appreciate the effort but we need a 1:1 alternative. Like DuckDuckGo and Google, they do the same thing just as simple. ProtonMail vs Gmail, or FireFox vs Chrome.

Just go to something like Mastadon and see how complex it is compared to Twitter or PeerTube compared to YouTube. Unintuitive and uninviting. I tried GIMP as a photoshop alternative, I had nightmares. I actually found in-web-browser image editor that was simpler to use.
