Looking forward to the future class action lawsuit where someone (Facebook?) misuses all this information we give them so we can get a check for a few pennies.

The cost to print and mail the checks will be more than the payout.
Exactly, another scam to get more updated personally identifiable information so they can track and spam you even more. No thanks.

We're really sorry about how we mined your personal info. It won't happen again. To claim your payout please provide the following details:

Name
Address
DoB
Social Security Number
Facebook ID
email address
Phone number
Gender
Ethnicity
Religion
Political allegience
Details of any medical issues
Annual income
Mother's maiden name
Name of first pet

Many thanks and lots of love,

Mark Z

Any chance those of us in other countries that were also victims can make a claim?

The fines for Meta/Facebook/Cambridge Analytica are never big enough. They don’t discourage them at all. Some CA people like Brittany Kaiser went straight into selling merdaverse, crypto and nft scams.

we do we have to apply, why can't facebook simply pay every user they have by emailing them a virtual card

Can someone help me with the exact meaning of "any time between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022, inclusive"? I've moved to the US 3 years ago, would I still be eligible? Or does it only apply if you've been a US resident the entire timeframe?

I read it as if you’ve had a Facebook account and been a resident on any day between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022 you’re eligible. So you would be.

I moved out of the US in 2014 and consider myself eligible.

We all deleted Facebook around 2015 because it was a channel for destroying personal privacy and was basically filling up with nutjobs.

Don’t think it’s worth giving them our current PII for a settlement slice.

Why was the fine so tiny? Do criminals get a huge rebate if they sell personal data of a billion people at once instead just a few?
Probably to make sure those who are engaging with something as moronic as social media over extended periods of time don’t feel like they deserve a reward for their behaviour.

Is this exclusive to persons with a Facebook account? My understanding is that Facebook also tracks and stores info on people who don’t have an actual account. Perhaps those people were not part of the dataset that CA used?

I got over $400 in Illinois from the last facebook settlement so I’ll be filling this one out too…
I also received over $400 from the Illinois Facebook settlement. My spouse also received more than $400. No complaints.

I very much want to thank the people that abandoned their portion of the settlement money.

Is there any way to find out who receives the information you type in on the request form? It could be it's a third-party who has legal obligations regarding data privacy. If the payout would be less than $50, I wouldn't risk it in any case. But, with more information and a potentially larger payout, I might risk it. I'll track the news and see if any more information surfaces.

But, I don't think it will be a large payout. Since it's a national thing, and has had plenty of press coverage, I suspect a ton of people are going to apply; so many people have given all of their information to Facebook, so there's only an upside for them. Just guessing.

Just a note to clarify a few things:

1) Not everyone gets the same settlement -- the longer you were on Facebook during the period, the larger the payout.

2) The lawyer's fees are determined by the judge. They cannot exceed 25%, but could be less.

3) The information you submit goes to the settlement people, not Facebook, and it is minimal -- you Facebook user ID, and either your email address or phone number that you already gave Facebook.

4) Very few people will get "checks." The promoted payment methods are electronic, such as PayPal, Zelle, direct deposit, etc.

I don't expect much of a payout, but I see no reason not to claim it.

But it is the same country where people got millions for getting sick from smoking, also it was always obvious that smoking is unhealthy.
