for those of us who have to have meta apps for messaging/work, don’t forget that you can limit access to the photos it has access to! it’s super easy to just hit manage and check the ones you want, and saves you the sinking feeling that zuck is sucking up all of your family photos. I think you have more confidence than the rest of us that any of these settings are actually being respected.

I know some many people are afraid or have FOMO, but quitting Facebook/Instagram was the best thing. I share worthwhile pictures via iMessage with real friends (and have geniune non-public conversations with them).

Stop using Meta and stop feeding them your data.

I totally had FOMO but the most surprising thing is that it took me less than a week to not even care about what was going on on Instagram or Threads anymore after years of 50+ pickups per day.

I read Apple News a couple of times per day or when something important catches my eye, listen to great podcasts and watch some TV shows I like every now and then and that's it. I feel like I got off some hard drug, there's a whole world out there and now I'm aware of people walking around like zombies staring into their phones for their latest dopamine hit.

Facebook is so scuzzy. I'd love for Apple to buy out Instagram and get it into the hands of people you can trust with your personal data/information.

Dropping Facebook and later Twitter was a relief I didn't fully appreciate until I did it, and this was long before the current crop of "AI" was involved. The negative effects social media platforms have on you are difficult to understand while you're still using them. The "upsides" seem more compelling than they actually are.

You don't realize the weight until it's lifted.

Meta is adding a new AI-based collage and photo editing tool to Facebook, and it's rolling out starting today. The opt-in feature scans your camera roll for your best photos and videos, uploads those images to the cloud, then uses AI to create "fun collages and edits."

Facebook will suggest photo collages, recaps, AI restyling, or themes like birthdays, graduations, and trips. Once you opt in, the AI works behind the scenes on an ongoing basis and will randomly suggest photo and video edits for you to post. Suggested edits are private, unless you decide to share them.

If you do decide to share something the AI created, your friends will see it, and Facebook will use it for AI training. Meta says that media from your camera roll isn't used to improve AI, unless you share suggested content or edit it with Meta's AI tools.

Facebook users in the U.S. and Canada can use the new functionality, and sharing recommendations will appear in Stories and Feed. Opting in or opting out can be done by navigating to Facebook's camera roll settings. Select your profile picture, then go to Settings and Privacy > Settings > Preferences > Camera Roll Sharing Suggestions.

Users who don't want their images used for AI training should avoid enabling the feature. For extra security, it is a good idea to restrict Facebook's access to the camera roll entirely, which can be done in the Facebook section of the iPhone settings app.

Meta has been loosening its privacy policies in order to improve Meta AI and to take advantage of AI interactions. In December, Meta plans to begin using generative AI conversations to personalize content and tailor ad recommendations. Text exchanges and voice conversations with AI will be used in the U.S. to personalize posts, reels, ads, and more, with no way to opt out.

The limit access is part of iOS not meta. Their app sandbox can’t see anything that you don’t let them see.

Ideally it’d be better to chuck Meta off a cliff but we are where we are.

I wonder if this is one of the reasons Apple AI is so delayed. Could they actually be trying to develop and train AI by not using stolen (unpaid for) resources or privacy-violating processes? I think that is a big aspect of AI that doesn’t get enough coverage.
It's not stolen, people need to read what they sign for.

100%. I came off all social media about 18 months ago and I don’t miss it whatsoever. All of it is toxic and it’s never going to get better. I don’t understand why people still take it so seriously - it’s not real life.

Wishful thinking but I’d like to think that within 10 years no one will use it anymore.

Recently finished the book “Careless People” and my god I learned how bad these people are. I mean of course I knew Meta was bad, but never guessed it is that bad.

I stopped using all of their products except Whatsapp and unfortunately I am unable to get rid of Whatsapp as its the standard messaging app in the UK and in Europe.

I wouldn’t say its the standard messaging app in Europe. I am in Europe. Most people I know are on iPhones so it’s iMessage with them users. Those who don’t have iPhones I ask them to install signal app and we message via signal.

If there's an undisclosed bug that circumvents the limit access then all your photos and videos are in the hands of Meta already. If you absolutely need Meta apps for work then use another iPhone with no personal data on it.

Years ago I read an article, macOS Catalina era, saying that most Safari privacy toggles are gimmicky made for users to feel good and feel protected ever since I read that I stopped using Safari as my default browser on all my iDevices.

Totally unsurprising considering Facebook was founded on theft, specifically the theft of the entire idea of Facebook from its inventor Divya Narendra and his two co-founders Cameron Winklevoss and Tyler Winklevoss.

Not a chance.. I was disgusted when various governments declared copyright laws did not apply to anyone stealing things to train Ai, it was a clear indication they want Ai no matter the consequences, probably saw money signs in their eyes at the idea of it all.

I expect moving forward any images or videos will be declared free rein to Ai models and you will have no rights or say over it. Whilst Ai companies get exceedingly rich from your data.

I have a Facebook account because my ISP used to use Facebook Messenger for communication, thankfully they have ditched that now. But I gave it false details and NO pictures. I may close it down again actually.
