Who are they advertising to?
Despite being personally against it, I can see why someone might value being served personalized ads. Thing is, Apple does not ban them. They just give power to the customers to choose if they want the tracking or to opt out.

So, who is this ad aimed to and what purpose does it serve? They plan to cause a mass people's revolt against Apple, make them look as the bad guys to the eyes of the uninformed?

This is truly a case of “any advertising is good advertising”, for Apple.

And, I’d be willing to guess that one reason why it flopped was because it was WAAAAAY too focused on “targeted advertising” and not enough on being actually pleasant to use? Or was it just because it was Android?
They had partnered with HTC and did have some interesting concepts. The analysis back in the day (which I just reviewed) basically indicated: 1) Not everyone uses facebook or wants it at the center, 2) phone itself was meh hardware-wise, 3) didn’t offer an experience that couldn’t largely be replicated on existing phones, 4) competition was just that much better overall.

Sniff, i am so moved by this. I can barely see my keyboard through the tears; Add tracking, a selfless act on the part of fb, for the good of small businesses everywhere.

pass me another Kleenex . . .

That ad is supposed to make people more amenable to being tracked? Wow. Apple should run that in the prompt window.

I enjoyed the video editing of this ad, but Facebook seriously need to truly look at themselves in the mirror a lot longer. There are so many issues and yet Facebook doesn’t even pay attention to what the consumer needs/wants anymore. This is just trying to sugar coat everything so they can continue to harvest information.

When executives try to make a "cool" ad. Cringe.

Perhaps someone should make a counter-ad to remind people of Cambridge Analytica and how Facebook's "personalized" ads were used to spread targeted disinformation.

That track is awful.

Put this ad into testing with REAL business owners. See how that goes. This ad doesn't represent them, but an over-stylised ideal to make more money Facebook is losing it's grip on.

I've never understood "personalized advertising". It seems like they always show one of the following 1) something I was just looking at and already purchased, 2) something I was looking at for someone else but not interested in it for myself, or 3) something I've already determined I don't want. How about just showing me something random that I've never seen before and might not know about...you know, like the good ol' days on TV.
Seriously. Personalized ads are stupid and don't function well. 99% of the ads I see are for things I already own or subscribe to. I'm getting really tired of seeing subscription service ads for services I already subscribe to like Disney+ or Hulu.

I want to know WHO are the people personalized ads work on? Is it the same people that have just enough money left over after responding (WHAT LUCK) to three separate Nigerian princes (who just need a small amount of money from them to help get access to a larger sum)?

Everything I need to know about Facebook and the people that run it:

Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

Zuck: Just ask.

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?

Zuck: People just submitted it.

Zuck: I don't know why.

Zuck: They "trust me"

Zuck: Dumb ****s.
Don’t be a “dumb ****”

Omg that is horrible. too bad the people who made that commercial and song were found.....

This is pathetic. And I love it. The ratio, 341 downvotes to 14 upvotes, tells me that most people see right through this nauseating attempt to frame their extreme tracking measures as more valuable to small business & the consumer than it is to Facebook. The fact that people are being forced to see it gives me hope. Suckerberg wants to “inflict pain on Apple” for this? Well I for one want Fb to know who’s side I’m on.... data privacy rights & internet freedom. He can go zuck himself.

Yes Apple is all about internet freedom ..

An example of personalized advertising: I don’t own a weapon, nor have the intention of buying one. My Facebook ads: 2/4 are related to weapons.

In a strange act of unity, Facebook has created a video we can all come together to dislike

Never used Facebook. Never will use Facebook.
I'll be damned if I could understand what that advert was about, or even understand what they were saying.

Maybe I'm too old to be their target audience?

This is some serious 1984 Ministry of Truth NewSpeak brain washing 🤣🤣🤣

Seriously, Facebook's only commodity is user's personal data and that commodity resources is drying up. People are no longer "dumb *****" and they too choose to cover their laptop web cams!

We don't need FB portal to discover things on the internet, we discovered them via tv, magazines, word of mouth, sites, search engines, and as far as respectable social platforms there is the free and FOSS pixelfed and mastodon. We don't need you your "gateway" !

Facebook needs a mass exodus immediately. It's not a particularly good platform to begin with but the company is absolute trash. Withdraw from any and all Facebook associated services you can afford to.

Its no issue but Instagram is a really tough one. There are people who actually make a living on it and there is no real alternative. Other options are just not as polished. You can easily replace Whatsapp.

I think the effectivity of personalized advertising just never ran up against needed resistance. There’s LOTS of things that are WAY more effective than the way that certain industries (military, medicine, etc.) have settled upon doing them. Maybe this is the opportunity for the advertising industry to say that, even though it may be more effective, we’re not doing it anymore.
I agree there is resistance needed. However, I don't agree that they should stop doing it. I think they should get permission for how/when they do it....and not by making Gmail free and putting it in the T&C's Getting rid of personalized advertising entirely I believe is throwing out the baby with the bath water.

Yes, it is that if you assume that the “baby” in this case is a demonic entity. And I’m all for that :)

Bad analogy time! I feel it’s like child labor. For a growing family it’s the “most effective way of enhancing the total earning capacity of the family unit, but we reject that effectiveness because of the likelihood that families/children could be exploited.
