face down is just a carry-over habit from regular land line phone use as the receiver is "face down" on the base unit...it also makes it easier to pick up and use, no flipping it in hand (drop potential)...face down is just the "natural" way to have a phone down when not in use.

assuming you don't have a screen protector, wouldn't this just be another way to scratch it, like on something that's already on the table? which would cause friction when you pull the phone awayy
I'm not sure what having "piece of mind" feels like, but it can't be pleasant compared to having peace of mind.
Btw, the iPhone isn't a bird that can lay eggs, so it can only lie down, not lay down.
