is it me or has anyone else noticed faceid seems more efficient?! I mean I’m getting access from different angles easy!!

I’ve had the phone since launch.

It’s supposed to improve over time, get better at recognizing your face. That’s the whole point of machine learning.

Yep. In fact, it was documented in a white paper - both successful and unsuccessful (but within a specific threshold), are used to augment the existing enrolled facial data (i.e., the mathematical representation).

(Side note: working on a neat ML project, not Apple related, but very cool stuff ...)

Lolwut?
Go read a wiki on “machine learning”.

Example:
If you met two identical twins & couldn't tell them apart at 1st... would you you get better at telling them apart over time, or worse?
C’mon... think it through!

Could you elaborate on that? My experience matches the OP. It seems to work more quickly than it did initially.

I’d be curious to know why it “can only get worse.”

Don’t bother. He’s been rabidly anti-Face ID since it was announced, and hasn’t bothered to give credence to anything positive about it since. Just ignore him, or he’ll suck you into a vortex of illogical nonsense.

I didn’t have faith that Apple could pull it off.
Gotcha.

Yeah, I knew it would mostly work, and when I skimmed the white paper they released, I was hopeful, but it really is quite something.

I used FaceID in a wide range of environments over the last few days, we were at Universal, and it worked in direct sunlight, in near dark, with odd tinted lighting, quickly while on the move, just after getting out of the pool - worked consistently terrific!

FaceID works well except when i'm in bed and my face is half covered by my pillow
[but not a dealbreaker by all means i can do my passcode still]

im just so impressed it works well in zero room light!

It’s working even better for me too since launch.

Even first thing in the morning, in different lighting conditions and further away.

I like the fact that if I have my hand over my mouth (thinking kind of way), it doesn’t work

Yea it wants to detect your mouth and eyes at least. That's what I'm thinking how faceID works...

Have you noticed any problems in bright daylight yet? I've seen some people saying bright daylight can mess up the IR but it seemed to work excellent for me. even with my sunnies on this god damn one of a device still knew my face [polarizing sunglasses which i wear, may help make the scenario better over non-polarized sunglasses?]

It absolutely learns. I can put my hand over various parts of my face and Face ID will fail the first time. Then I put in my passcode (which tells Face ID that it’s me it’s failing to recognize) and without moving my hand away from my face, it works next time to Face ID log in.

I like how if it fails to recognize your face it goes straight for passcode. I guess it just takes a lot of time for the phone to get used to it.

This is interesting.

If unsuccessful Face ID attempts followed entry of passcode are indeed used to 'improve' detection rates, does it mean it is best not to use other family members’ phones using passcodes? Would we make the base detection rates worse?

I was surprised this morning when FaceID recognized me despite nearly half my face being covered by the pillow and my elbow. I knew it would get better over time, but it has improved beyond my expectations.

Yup it's gotten to the point where it hasn't failed to recognize me once in the past few days. It's only been 10 days of using Face ID and it's reliability is blowing Touch IDs out of the water (used to get less reliable with time and would fail to authenticate multiple times a day).

One thing Face ID failed at when I first got it was authenticating me while yawning after waking up. By day 3 it had learned to authenticate me while yawning with 100% success rate. It learns incredibly quickly.

And that’s a good question.

No, because they wouldn't be well within the threshold of a match - it's not just applying the difference from a non-registered face if they use the passcode (and thus degrading the existing data), it's using fairly complex algorithms to determine if the Face data is yours given some difference in the fresh scan and the enrolled facial data.

I think the machine learning will have a threshold of how different a face can be until it just chalks it up as a different face entirely and therefore it will disregard it for the purposes of improving 'recognition' of your face. This is how I think it will work anyway.
