The phone won't unlock if im not wearing my glasses...is there any way to register another "face"? How is it able to work through sunglasses but can't recognize me if im not wearing regular eyeglasses?

Why not create your faceID without glasses on? That's what i did from the beginning, and it recognizes me with my glasses on.

I wear glasses and contacts so I did the Face ID set up with my contacts in. Tried on my glasses and Face ID failed the first couple of times but then worked on the first try after Face ID ‘learned’ my face with glasses on.

I had an issue today with wearing Ray Ban Aviator sunglasses. Will try redoing my face with them on and see if it works without them on.

I know that this is thread is resolved, but it's ridiculous that you need to setup Face ID without glasses.

I just got my iPhone X, and like the OP, Face ID failed if I removed my glasses. I had to set up Face ID without glasses to for Face ID to recognise me with or without glasses.

Apple should mention this during the Face ID setup process, or Face ID should be able to recognise people when not wearing glasses initially. I don't look that different with or without my glasses, so surprised Face ID could not detect that I'm the same person.

Its probably not a univeral problem, i set up with my glasses, and it works fine with and without. Could be some kind of reflection in bright light that hides your eye area, probably lots of different variables. It does keep learning each timr you unlock so you can keep training it. I’ve found mine now unlocks with an off angle view better than before.

Why, if wearing glasses is normal, would you setup face ID without glasses? If you normally wear glasses wouldn't you want to set it up like you would normally appear, with glasses. I set mine up without (I don't normally wear glasses, but it recognized me in some sunglasses.

Something that should be noted, when Face ID fails it is important to unlock your phone with the passcode. Do not tap the side button and attempt Face ID a second time.

The way the iPhone learns your face is by failure and then authentication through the passcode. If you skip the passcode step and attempt another facial scan, the phone does not register that failure and thus cannot learn from it. So let your phone fail early on, use the passcode, allow it to learn for a little while. This worked wonders for me in contacts all day, prescription glasses all night, sunglasses all weekend.

Is this noted in an Apple document?

Is this true.

Patient: Doctor! It hurts when I do this.
Doctor: Well, don't do that!

Say that you always wear glasses but you lose them in a car wreck, or you hear a break-in in the middle of the night.... I could see some enormous lawsuits from this.

Another question - What if half the time you are in daylight and the other half is spent in a dark room with the light of the display reflecting off your glasses. What then?

I have come to hate Apple's pushing everyone forward. If something works for 85% of users, the other 15% are screwed. If facial recognition works along the same percentages, I am against it. I miss the company that used to represent "the rest of us."

Hell I don’t even wear glasses ever and mine doesn’t even recognize me most of the time. I love the iPhone X. But I hate Face ID. It’s the worst thing ever for $1k.

Could be your glasses have a coating to block IR.

I did my Face ID without my glasses and it works with them, even my sunglasses work perfectly. Only way to stop my Face ID from working is if I frown!

As a data point, I had absolutely no trouble with or without glasses and with sunglasses. The OP's problem is far from universal.

I wear reading glasses, so most of the time I have them on when accessing the phone
But there are times that I pick up the phone before putting them on
Haven't really had any issues with Face ID working with or without glasses

I probably set it up wearing glasses first, but honestly don't remember

I setup face-ID with my glasses on. At a later moment I wasn't wearing my glasses and face-ID didn't recognise me. I entered the passcode. This happened another time and since than face-ID recognises me with and without glasses every time :)

Are you holding the iPhone at the same distance as during setup? I discovered that if I was holding the iPhone closer to my face then face-ID wouldn't recognise me.

About the same distance. I just deleted it off my phone. Now I just slide to unlock. Kind of pointless for me to have it when I have to put my pin in about 70% of the time I use my phone.

My 4 iPhone X's are performing flawlessly in my household, and in reading your posts I believe you have a defective sensor array.

Suggest you visit an Apple store and make an appointment with a Genius, you likely need a handset replacement.

Might be better for some to use a passcode instead of FaceID if it fails to work for them. I know I have owned 3 Apple watches and not one could dependability track my HR no matter how I worn it. I gave up and went back to my Fitbit.

enormous lawsuits?!

Haha!

If YOU lose your glasses, then use the passcode that’s presented to you after just 2 failed attempts of Face ID, unlock your phone and re-register your face until you get some new glasses.

If you hear a break-in in the night, reach for your phone, press ‘emergency’ on the lock screen, and call the police. You don’t need to unlock the phone to make an emergency call...

It’s more ridiculous that you think it’s ridiculous lol I’ve lost hope in humans. Poor us, we have to take our Fing glasses off for our phone to register our face! HOW DARE THEY. Lol pitiful
