I don't have a texting plan and it does work for me, so that's not a factor. Have you tried it the dial up way? Call the other phone then hit the FaceTime button?

I've made it work with a friend in another city and here at home between hubby's and my phones. Both times we called first then activated FaceTime. Haven't had a chance to try it through Contacts yet, been busy.

Re:Facetime, losing my mind, can't get it working

I had the same problem, double tap on the home button and close all of the running apps. Then try and open up FaceTime. That solved the problem for me.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

The wife and I tried our phones at the Apple store minutes after we purchased. We also tried it at home.

Both worked fine.

As others have said, check all the little settings (wifi, caller ID, etc). Also, try each phone with the FaceTime test line to Apple.

and try again.

If the Wi-Fi network router that you are connected to uses a firewall or security software to restrict Internet access, contact the network administrator and reference this technical article. To use FaceTime on a restricted Wi-Fi network, port forwarding must be enabled for ports 53, 80, 443, 4080, 5223, and 16393-16472 (UDP).

imac facetime won't sign in

For me the answer was, unplug ethernet cable and use your wireless connection to sign in. After initial sign in, works fine with ethernet.
