French site Mac4Ever briefly reports [Google translation] that iLife '11 may finally be nearing a launch and that Apple's FaceTime video calling feature currently available on the iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch may be set to come to both Mac and Windows platforms, a move which would provide a significant boost to the feature's appeal. FaceTime is said to be integrated into iChat on Mac OS X, although there is no word on how it would be offered on Windows.
To begin with, iLife '11, which was announced this summer (along with the disappearance of iDVD), might finally come out very very soon. Moreover, it's rumored that Apple is getting ready to release Facetime for Mac and PC, with the Mac version being integrated into the iChat software.
Mac4Ever offered remarkably accurate predictions well in advance of Apple's October 2009 iMac, correctly pinpointing the inclusion of an SD card slot and quad-core processor options, as well as the Magic Mouse and the revamped aluminum Apple Remote.

The site's recent predictions regarding iLife '11 have yet to come to fruition, however, as the release missed the claimed release date of August 17th. Details of the next-generation iLife suite such as 64-bit applications, significant iWeb revamp, iDVD discontinuation, and a new "mystery" app have of course yet to be confirmed either way, and we'll have to wait for the release to drop to judge these claims.

Thank you to user iKenny for an improved translation.

Finally, FaceTime will reach it's potential and become another killler app feature, one that applies to both Macs and iDevices.

I highly doubt it will come to Windows though. What's the point? Push the Mac desktop, we all know it's better and let FaceTime through iChat be another reason why.

Could it finally happen

maybe they will bring iChat to the Windows world. That would make life so much easier.

I was surprised when FaceTime didn't launch with iChat support. I guess it's just a matter of time. I only have 1 ip4 in my house so iChat capability would be really useful when I'm traveling. Right now it's pretty useless.

I'm out of my league on all this in terms of technical understanding, but it seems Apple would simply rebrand iChat as Facetime and make it all play nice together, right?

Probably not since iChat does more than video chatting. It was primarily the only way to get on AIM for OS X way back when. They'll, most likely, just add FaceTime to the protocols it uses.

I love facetime, I was at a show last night, and was broadcasting it for my buddy in spain, and he was rocking out to the music..it was great :)

I have never even heard of anyone who uses iChat. All of the people I know either use Skype or MSN. I would love to use iChat, but I would have no one to talk to.

If Apple really made iChat available for Windows, it would be an awesome step. However, how is that going to compete with Skype, MSN or Facebook? I hate having two different IM clients open at the same time, it's a waste of resources. If I would have to have iChat running as well, that would be quite confusing.

iChat would have to work with Skype and MSN accounts in order for people to start using it. Until then, we can't really do anything with it. It's like having a futuristic electric car but no place to charge it.

I wonder if iDVD function will fold into iMovie or something. It's odd to drop such a program while DVDs are still widely used. For future, though, I could understand not developing the software further, since in 5 or 6 years the DVD will be fading fast.

Can't wait for Apple to tie the desktop to Facetime. I have the iPhone 4 and have never used it. It needs to work with Windows as well to really be useful.

And maybe an app those Droid users can download......

God damn. Every day since I switched to the DX something awesome comes up and makes me reconsider my decision. Oh Apple, look what you have done to me!

Anyway, that's really cool. This will definitely drive up people's interest in FaceTime and it might end up being something actually useful instead of a once and a while phone argument catalyst.

First of all, I currently use iChat to video chat with my folks across the country.

Second, Apple claims to be opening up the FaceTime protocol so any dev can add it to their apps or build apps off of it, so it could be added to Trillian, etc. in future.

Ichat

Ichat need a total refresh so it would look more appealing to use and should be able to use it with more accounts like messenger, yahoo and other stuff (and not through jabber). Facetime would be so cool if it comes to mac and windows cause i don;t won any ipod touch nor iphone soo would be nice to see how it works.
