A facetime call over LTE probably slurps down 50mb (guessing)...
Imagine someone with a 250mb LTE plan, and by the end of the day or week using factime, they go over 250mb.... ouch..

The carriers got you guys by the balls LTE users....

Skype and Tango are perfectly functional over 3G. Why not FaceTime? Put a warning on the screen, whatever.

Jesus, if this guy refuses to shave (fair enough) he might as well stand a bit further away from the screen...:p

The average person, probably never.

The not so average entitled whiners on sites like this that are simply mad about being told they can't do something because they don't like being told that no matter what the reason, if you listen to them it is the end of the world that they can't FaceTime on a cell connection. Classic first world problem.

Right, and as a result, it should be allowed. Whiners stop whining about not being able to, while not actually doing it, thus the network doesn't get any extra burden, and customers perceive it as less lousy.

This limitation seems quite odd to me given there are other products out there now like Vidyo that offer HD video conferencing on iOS devices including the iPad2 (and new iPad) over 3G and 4G networks.

I guess I understand wanting to limit the actual bandwidth used on the cellphone networks, but if you really want Facetime capability, it is out there.

I'm not surpried, but if you REALLY wanted to do it when you are out, just use your iPhone as a personal hotspot and connect that with the iPad via WiFi, that's if you really needed it of course.

Even better, use the iPad as an LTE hotspot and use the iPhone for your FaceTime!

I'm honestly not too surprised. I kind of thought Apple would introduce it with an LTE iPhone one day.

You know what bothers me the most? The lack of any official word on an open specification for Facetime.

Sure, I will be honest, I never believed that Apple would have let it be an open standard (after all, they would be giving up potential hardware sales), but the fact that Steve Jobs said it, over two years ago, and not a single peep has been muttered since... it just doesn't jive with me.

I think at least Apple needs to call out it's "partner" networks on this issue.

Call them out all you want. Problem is the lack of bandwidth on the network. Providers are busy enough trying to get LTE workable in more than a handfull of cities, let alone providing enough to support FaceTime. It will be quite some time before they can get their infrastructure up to needed capacities and speeds to handle it.

Apple is not above reproach.
Apple is not infallible.

The roadblocks we all face are the result of greed. And I blame Apple as well as all the carriers.

Apple and the carriers are not giving us what we want.

We want what we want, and we want it NOW!

Quit being greedy and hand it over!

People with glasses and beards BUILT the internet

Glasses, no beards. read up on Bolt, Beranek, and Newman, they are the real fathers of the Internet.

I used the Verizon Data Calculator with the prospect of using the LTE-iPad in a way that would be logical when you have a high speed connection to a device with a gorgeous big screen.

I think this picture says more than 1000 words, think about $10 per GB....

I don't see the data usage as something abnormal, it is the logical usage you would have on a fast network, without being forced to rely on WiFi all the time.

It still makes me sad now to watch Steve on stage... :/

They really should put FaceTime for sale to (ex) Android Market. 2,99 USD perhaps? I bet millions would by it..

Now its called Google PLAY, what a stupid name. Maybe it's the world Play that is bugging me, I hate term AirPlay too but at least that name makes quite perfect sense.

They will add the facetime over cellular in iPad4 with the LED flash for photo.
They will then be hailed as being innovative.

Apple sure knows how to hand feed the incremental "tick" upgrades to the sheeples.:p

I have Skype, ooVoo and Tango to be working over 3G. Also have few VRS (video Relay Service) mobile on both of iPhone and iPad 2 for deaf video callings.

The hipster is strong with this one.

Really though, I'm never going to get over people wearing a glasses style from the 50s in a non-ironic fashion.

My guess is that FaceTime over LTE will happen when they announce the new iPhone either in Summer or Fall.

sooner or later carries will take advantage of this and let it work over the 4G..FaceTime=more data=more $$$ data fees You know AT&T they hungry for money and that's all they eat

One can stream hundreds of megabytes in seconds over LTE but god forbid you try and stream a compressed video call, oh no.

Can you stream iTunes Match songs?
