The Verge confirms in its testing with a review unit of the new iPad with 4G LTE that FaceTime video calling remains limited to Wi-Fi networks despite the fact that LTE offers greater bandwidth than many Wi-Fi networks.Image

As the report notes, Steve Jobs claimed during FaceTime's introduction at the iPhone 4 media event in June 2010 that Apple still needed to work with carriers to support FaceTime over cellular data networks and that the feature would consequently remain Wi-Fi-only at least through 2010. Well into 2012 and with 3G now giving way to LTE on the new iPad, it seems that carriers are still unwilling to allow FaceTime calls to be transmitted natively over their networks, presumably due to concerns about increased data usage and strained network capacity.

Boooooooo!

Then how come android can do video calling over both 3g and 4g and it works fine including google talk which is from google themselves.
Google Talk is restricted to WiFi only on AT&T Android phones by default.
Easy to fix though. You have to edit the gtalk_vc_wifi_only value in the GServices database from true to false to disable the restriction.
Yes... root is required.

Its not disabled on verizon.

When Facetime was introduced the haters acted as if no one would use it and it was a gimmick; now that it's restricted the same haters are acting as if Apple is denying millions of people from using it. :D How funny.

How do you know it's the same people ?

The fact is, Facetime when introduced was yet another proprietary video chat solution where tons already existed on the market. The fact that Apple limited it to Macs and iOS devices over Wi-Fi only sure didn't help its adoption.

Those are both facts, and frankly there's no hate in stating them.

Well I don't know, I just always group the haters together hehe. My point here is people can't say no one uses/will use Facetime, and then turn around and say Apple is limiting people from using Facetime. It just seems contradictory.

Apple will be fine, I have a strong hunch. Doubtful that 3G restrictions on Facetime will have any impact on anything. :D

How ? Again, like I said :

- Facetime is another competing proprietary standard against other solutions on the market, fracturing said market.
- Limiting it to Macs and iOS devices over Wi-fi is going to hamper its adoption and thus remove some benefit from the users of the system.

I just stated both, no hating, no contradiction. Maybe you should just stop labelling people who don't share your viewpoints as haters ? There is no hate in stating plain facts.

Apple has made mistakes and introduced failures before and they are indeed alright. 1 failed project does not mean the company is going under. This is true of every vendor in the industry, not just Apple.

But as far as I can remember, when Facetime was introduced, the criticism wasn't about how proprietary it was, it was that it's a gimmick that no one would use (much like Siri). Chances are the great bulk of Apple users are not using Facetime or Siri, because maybe it is a gimmick. It's just funny that people are now acting as if the reason it's not being used is because of 3G restrictions :D

Yes, this is my point. No one cares about Facetime. It's a nice way for people to say how badly Apple is screwed up and post a lot of "" emoticons, but the truth is, Facetime adoption will not affect Apple in the least. They'll still make billions :D
