You mean 2011, right? Or are you from a different planet?
Joking aside, maybe we'll see a FaceTime over 3G option that would cost 5 or 10 dollars a month (hoping for the latter). Who knows.
Three-way FaceTime, possibly? Don't forget it will also work over 3G.
just what i was gonna say. way way way more people on it and 3g and wifi.
I do the same thing every year as well. It takes a few months, but the mistakes are fun to laugh at in the meantime.Damn! It takes me some time to get that right.
Yes, I meant 2011![]()
This is kind of why I want to believe FaceTime will be over 3G. More carriers, more competition. When Steve says "Wi-Fi only in 2010" you can only assume that the 3G version is most likely to appear in the new year - 2011. I expect it this year. What makes you doubt? On the other hand, what do you have against 3-way video calling?Three-way FaceTime, ya I don't think so. "Don't forget it will also work over 3G" sounds very confident, and while it is the implication of the OP, we don't have enough information yet to assume that.
Supposing the iPhone does come to Verizon, however, I believe the carriers will compete over wireless features, not price of data plans. In other words, it would really pressure them to offer FaceTime calling over 3G, among other things such as increased data caps, download limits on individual files, etc.
A likely scenario. I know maybe a small handful of people who use Skype - a service of which I don't even use myself.3G quality sucks tho. plus anyone that has an iphone or buys anything on itunes can facetime, so once they release facetime on windows and the mac version comes out of beta, i would say more people would have facetime.
personally i have more friends that have an iphone or a mac or an itunes account on windows than a skype account...

We'll see...Steve said wifi only in 2010 as that was a certainty, Apple are probably working on having it over 3G, but do not want to commit to more details. there may or may not be facetime over 3G this year, it's anyones guess. I won't expect anything.
We'll see...
You do realize that it's AT&T's fault and not Apple's, right?i'm not saying it won't happen, just saying that i'm not holding out any expectation. they obviously did not want to commit and only knew it would definitely only be wifi in 2010.
When Apple makes FaceTime an open standard, maybe. I hope it will catch on soon.I am really hoping for 3G FaceTime, and an integration of FaceTime email addresses (used on mac beta & iPod touch) with the phone number system used on the iPhone 4.
Other advances I hope for.... (this is more a wish list on some points.)
Integration of FaceTime as standard in Lion mac os x.
Integration of FaceTime in iPad, extermal camera dongle for existing users.
A windows beta of FaceTime. (win xp-win7)
FaceTime support from other cell phones, maybe an android app? (it would be great to have a universal standard, without the hassles of skype and other im's)
Have you used Skype? The quality is horrible especially on the iPhone (it's almost embarrassingly bad). FaceTime actually works really well and the quality holds up even on bad connections (I'm using My3G to use it over 3G). It's a good standard. Now if they'll just open it up like they said they would we'll see more usage. Why bother with FaceTime? Use skype for cam2cam.
On the other hand, what do you have against 3-way video calling
Split the screen in two and have your icon off to the side. You never know!I don't think it would work very well with the size of the screen; I don't Steve would either. I don't really have anything against it other than that nor do I have any need for video calling in the first place.
You do realize that it's AT&T's fault and not Apple's, right?
you misunderstood what i was saying.
Apple did not want to commit to anything more than wifi until they sort out 3G too.
you do realise there are other networks that have the iPhone, so it won't be just AT&T if it's down to the carriers.
There is no technical reason for FaceTime not to work on 3G as it works fine over 3G if you've got a jailbroken phone and My3G.you misunderstood what i was saying.

Let's just say AT&T is lazy and doesn't want any more unnecessary traffic. There is no technical reason for FaceTime not to work on 3G as it works fine over 3G if you've got a jailbroken phone and My3G.

I use 3G Unrestrictor.
I have it enabled on YouTube, AppStore, Facebook, FaceTime, LogMeIn, Netflix, Padora, & Skype.
All of these apps change their settings when on 3G compared to Wifi. So now they always think I'm on WiFi.
Yup. I've been doing FaceTime calls on 3G since day one. Luckily, i kept my unlimited data plan.![]()
judging by the quality of fring and skype over 3G, it's easy to see why they kept facetime to Wifi only.
