I did a facetime chat with my wife this morning. I'm at home cleaning up after a leaky water heater...was able to show her the cleanup.

It will take some time to integrate into people's lives. I didn't get into SMS at first, but I use it regularly now.

I would like Facetime to be able to broadcast a picture from my photos instead of video.

oh she's a cutie! actually made me giggle a bit. :)

It's better since it doesn't require a computer.

Yeah! Exactly! Facetime only requires a...handheld computer...that is not really available to the general public and...a cell phone plan plus contract through AT&T and...you know what? Nevermind.

You just keep doin your thing man.

Hey now, let's leave all positive posts regarding iPhone 4 off MR, please. We're in the middle of a crisis here. No joy, only angst, hair pulling and self flagellation allowed.

haha nice.

I could actually see Facetime being useful. You're in a store (that hopefully has wifi) and you're picking up something for your wife, husband, whoever and you're not sure which is the right product. Quick call over Facetime and instead of having to describe each item, you just show them.

Now I just wish someone among my friends and family were getting an iphone 4 as well.

got my iphone4 yesterday at an ATT store. Got home and called my cousin who lives in Hawaii who also got his. He just moved into a new house and "FaceTimed" to show it to me. It was crystal clear, no lag. I was very impressed. It's awesome if you have relatives/friends who live overseas or even cross country.

FACETIME FTW

Completely agree with the OP. I'm working away from home at the moment and I used Facetime for the first time to call my kids last night (age 5 & 1).

Absolutely wonderful to see their faces, and I came off the phone feeling on top of the world. All of a sudden that lonely hotel room didn't seem quite so lonely.

Did anyone see the FaceTime- specific commercial yesterday?

I'm a cynical sob and even I almost cried....I bet their priority list request will grow tenfold from that commercial alone.

I dont know if this has been asked, but wouldn't it be more appropriate to keep your shirt on while talking to the daughter?

Dude...it's his daughter (I assume). It's not like the guy is naked. My dad constantly did work in the yard, etc w/o a shirt. Why the fuss?

Super cute! But seriously....for the sake of the forum...go put on a shirt. :p

So glad to see that people are making use of FT as I myself will probably not have a use for it.

Talked to my kids on FT for the first time from my driveway while connected to my home wifi. Was really cool and I'd definitely use it to call my family every time using FT, but one of two things is needed for that to happen: FT over 3G or WiMax connections. Looking forward to jailbreak and FT over 3G very soon... :)

Which is AT&T's fault, just like MMS was AT&T's fault. I am so sick of AT&T.

You'd think with the death of unlimited data they'd open that up so people can use the bandwidth they pay for. I don't get it, who cares if it's 20mb of facetime or 20mb of email pdf viewing.

People act like they've never seen a white person before...wait wrong song.

Has anyone on this forum never been to a lake, beach, or pool where 95% of guys don't have shirts on? Its completely acceptable in many modern cultures.

my mother doesn't love me anymore because of at&t... erg... I'm so sick of wireless carriers only doing things that will improve the performance of my phone! I want an extremely horrible cell phone experience...

Adorable kid! Facetime looks good but I would prefer the Skype App to support webcam. Otherwise I'll have to buy my girlfriend an iPhone 4 too. :(

I tried it out, and it definitely is awesome. I used this also practically -- a friend was going to come to my house so I facetime'd and showed him the general area with my phone so he knew what to look for.

I like how people say Skype or Msn. It's not the same because your child has to be seated in front of the computer for one or chased with a macbook with isight. The shiny phone at least fascinates a child and they'll talk even holding it up themselves, while walking, strolling, just doing what kids do.

So she was amazed by the first call, stared at the screen without talking... I called her the 2nd time and she was glued to the iPad watching Toy Story 2, and he said "I don't want to look at daddy!"

Lol :)

LOL...
I would've loved to be able to video chat on my phone with my daughter while I was traveling when she was little...
That's great skafia...thanks for posting the screen shot....so cute...
btw, my daughter would've done/said the same thing the second time if she was watching a disney movie on an iPad...LOL
(she's 25 now and would say the same thing now if I called and she was watching a Disney movie)...:D

As someone who will not use the feature a lot - I'm glad it's there. It's not the same as being "tethered" to a laptop for skype/etc

Two examples where my wife and I have either used it or "knocking vid" which is an app for one sided "facetime"

1) she's shopping and wants to show me something
2) We were looking at apts and on occasion one of us couldn't be there - so in addition to taking pics - the other one used the app

I do think that within a year, it will be available on 3G. ATT will want people to burn through their 2 gig plan and need/want more. No doubt they'll do number crunching on how many people are on unlimited vs caps

Or worse (which I hope they do not do) - they'll have a sep. "plan" for facetime minutes. So you'd have packages for phone, internet, texting, tethering and facetime.

Hope it's not the latter.

I've facetimed a bunch of times. I actually use it quite a bit. It is freakin amazing, and I really think its better than ichat simply because its on a phone. If you want to show them something thats in a another room, you can just bring it with you, and the fact that you can switch cameras really helps too. I had a 45 minute face time convo with a friend and it almost felt like we were chillin. We even tried jamming together through it. (him on guitar, me on drums) Obviously it didnt work and we were just BSing about it :D

and that 45 minute convo only used 19% battery. Thats pretty damn good if you ask me.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys, I guess the ones who posted negative comments overlooked the part where I said "Apple, I know you weren't first..."

Can you use video chat using skype, msn or iChat on a phone?

Thanks @jyj!

Skype has built in video chat on an N900 with the ability to IM at the same time as well. Video quality isn't as crisp as Facetime (it's an older phone) but much better than some webcams on computers. I've used it and it works wonders. I've had more use out of it than Facetime but only because Facetime is new and not everyone has it yet. Just thought I'd clear that up :)

I can see myself using Facetime more in the future. I'm not married and don't have kids but I could definitely see myself showing my future children to my parents over Facetime when they want to see them. It's amazing how technology keeps us connected. Your post is the perfect example!

I'd love to see Skype use the iPhone and iPod touch's camera for video calling. :) My family talk with relatives in Korea with Skype on a laptop(the webcam is most time angled to nowhere), and although FaceTiming with iPhone 4 would be better, my aunt in Korea is considering Galaxy S over iPhone 4 because of the ability to watch T-DMB(even though she has an iriver B20). :(

we can only hope, but bearing in mind Skype took a year to actually put push notifications on, i feel it could be a while!!!
