MBP 17" failed video GeForce 8600GT

So I'm looking at replacing the failed video chip in my 2007 MacBook Pro 17"
With the Nvidia G84-603-A2. I understand that this is a suitable replacement and will fit. I'm sending the logic board off to a company that has the equipment to accomplish this task.
What I'm looking for is feedback from anyone that has done this or has any experience or knowledge of this newer Nvidia chip, fail rate, heat issues, etc.
Basically I do not want to get back into the same problems again with video going bad on my MacBook Pro.
Thanks all

I too got a replacement logic board and recently ran the Unigine Valley benchmarking test to find some strange results.

The FPS performance at 8x AA is always higher than the performance at lower AA settings. And the display is always garbled at 8x AA. At 4x AA settings the video flow is jerky but not garbled as with 8x.

Has anyone experienced anything similar or has an idea what's going on?

Thing is it does things like Furmark just fine. Only weird thing that happens is on Unigine Valley and Unigine Heaven when I set anti-alianising on 8x this happens, and it happens on a 13" 2011 Macbook Pro too:

But other than this the only other thing is the log in screen.

Hi ogremoustro,
Did you resolve if this is related? Some later posts were suggesting that it was not necessarily related, and I cannot find a lot about this issue on the net, and I really want to find out.

I have the same issue, my screen messing up completely when running Engine Valley or Heaven with 8x anti aliasing.
It does not happen with lesser values, and does not happen with Furmark, although the screen briefly messes up, when starting Furmark.

Another interesting thing that happens is that my whole screen turns bluish, when I start the Engine applications, no matter what setting I choose.

And in addition, when I play movies on VLC, they almost always messes up with grey/pixelated screen at least once during the playback. It also sometimes shows some of the smaller signs of display distortion like I have seen before, when opening finder windows, opening a save-dialogue in Photoshop, and the like.

It is my clear suspicion that the issue has not been resolved yet.

I have a Macbook Pro early 2011. I have had my Logic Board replaced two times under the Repair Programme, but when I went with it last time, they argued that the logs didn't show any problem, although these issues persist.

Greetings,
Michel

Hi! My guess is that all older Macbook Pro's such as the 2011 models just couldn't handle 8x anti-aliasing.

I do not have my 2011 model anymore as Apple just gave up on replacing mine over and over again and gave me a 2014 Retina Macbook Pro a little over a year ago. I do still remember though that it would first start failing when I would watch movies using VLC since VLC uses the discrete card. First there'd be some pixelation and then after a while it'd just give up completely and go blank and wouldn't boot.

My recommendation is that you keep "bugging" them; go to a different Apple store, do whatever you can to get the problem resolved as it is clear that it has not been.

Have you tried connecting an external monitor?

In my case, I had a late 2011 with a failed chip. I would see a white screen with the Apple logo. As the progress bar moved from left to right, the logo would disappear and I would be left with a white screen.

If nothing works, I suggest removing the hard drive to retrieve your data and sell the machine for parts.

How to connect my MBP early 2011 built with complete black screen on turning on to a PC with Linux (Ubuntu) installed on it and remove the *kexts file.I think my amd GPU chip has failed completely.I have a mini display port to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable.
And one more thing can I install Ubuntu Linux on a 2.5 " internal hard dial(spare one) and boot the Mac from the hard drive with Linux installed and remove the *kexts file.

Raballing is NOT what is helping those faulty amd gpu chips, see here why:

The fault is within the chips, heating them up to about 120C (100C below melting point of lead free solder) is engough and may fix them for some time, but they will fail again
