Generally speaking, you can go by what minimum wage is, which is well under $10/hour in most states (Hawaii it's $7.25, just checked). Not sure how $10 an hour would be taking advantage of anyone... Why would I pay someone what I make hourly as a doctor to stand in line for me. That's just... ridiculous.

Wow, they must pay doctors crap where you live. Most that I know where I live make a minimum of $250,000 a year, with those in specialty fields over $500,000 a year.

I wasn't implying that a doctor made $50 an hour. The statement that was made is, "pay what you would want to be paid". So... as a doctor (veterinarian, actually), why would I pay my salary to a HOMELESS person to stand in line for me? Makes no sense. But... I think, at the very least, you realize you are diverting the point now. ;)

I understand what you are saying. I threw out $50 an hour because of how silly this thread is. To actually be so consumed by a $200 phone (cost to make) that you must have it so bad the very day it comes out, you would pay someone to stand in line for you, shows how self centered and instant gratified society has become.

I agree on the 2nd part.
But you understand that the $50 an hour part you suggested was silly.
I'd stay in line for as long as you want for that amount:D

Fair enough. I was just pointing out the ridiculousness of your statement. Glad we can all agree just how ridiculous it was. :D

Who knows what this guy does for a living? I sit here thinking people driving their Maserati's, Lamborginis, etc. in town are a bunch of self-centered *******s too. Who spends hundreds of thousands on a car? Well, they do.

Back in my college years I camped out three nights for a PS3. I was the third in line, someone walked up to the guy in the front and offered him $400. He wouldn't budge. But I took the deal. It was a lot of money to me then (not saying it isn't now, I have only finally been out of school for a year now) and I was happy to take it. Obviously it was worth the $400 for the guy who got to buy his PS3 that day. Maybe to some people having that phone on the first day is their version of the supercar that they wish they could have, but know they likely never will. I won't judge. As I kid I fully expected to be a millionaire by now.

I just realized I didn't say how much I think is a fair offer...

I think $10-$15/hr is a good deal.

If you're talking about a homeless or transient then be respectful and pay at least $10/hr, get them some coffee and a meal and a chair to sit in. If it's a close friend buy them a beer. If it's someone replying to a Craigslist ad just ask them to name their hourly price and they get paid when you show back up. I'm about 50/50 on the ethics.. The angel side says "if you can't be there don't take a spot this way" the devil says "mom/dad/friend/employee or yourself it doesn't matter who is there, anyone behind you could have gotten there sooner or do like you and pay someone.

Good point on the being respectful part.

I'd say $50 is a fair price for about 7 hours..

He/She will run with the offer and phone :D

Not if you take there place towards the shop opening time and buy the phone yourself. You can also pay the person 10% at the start, then the rest when you arrive :)

I hope it works out for you OP.

Anthony :)

Does anyone in NYC know what bars/stores pay people to stand on corners with signs advertising a store? Or the people who pass out menus?

I can't imagine paying someone even minimum wage to literally just stand there.
