Everyone's got basically the right idea, I bet. Aluminum enclosure, same slot loading drive, similar form factor as current mini (with laptop components). Round Rects. I don't think they should push to make this thing even smaller; these are not meant as portables, and any extra manufacturing to achieve that goal will have to balance heat problems.

Based on an NVIDIA 9400M. Has anything ground breaking ever been done with the Mac mini that wasn't essentially carryover from other models (aside from the pragmatic electronics design aspects)?

I would be so happy if the new mac mini didnt have a CD drive!!

Why? It's a desktop machine and you're far more likely to be writing gigs-worth of data to external media over the course of time on that, than on a laptop while sitting on a plane! For one, I don't want to be backing up to an entire DVD across a wireless network that could drop out at any given time (I still use a wired router specifically for the reason that I have NEVER experienced any connection dropout, compared to both my Daughter's and Wife's machines which are on wireless (albeit they are PCs) which experience even ocassional disconnection issues, which is far too often for me!

And what if you don't have a second computer? Extra hardware in the form of an external Superdrive (a-la Macbook Air)? That's an extra £64 in the UK. All of a sudden the cheap entry level Mini doesn't look so cheap...

I hope the new Mac Mini is priced right, with upgraded CPU/GPU, and a bit smaller...

How about this one?

Sexy as hell, but too thin. The Mac Mini is a desktop computer. There's no reason at all for it to be any thinner than it is. I can understand width and length to save a little desk space, but thinness is completely useless and just makes the computer less powerful, less expandable, and more expensive. Same with the iMac.

If the new minis take on the shape of the new MBPs and MBs I'd buy one purely for the look of it all. I really have no use for one. :D

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

I love the "fake" images. I like to see the creativity of people outside the Apple bubble. I think that it is fun.

That's what I'm talking about!!!

Ok, so we have some pix. I doubt that it could be much thinner than currently but either way I am definitely counting down now... Getting my $$$ ready :apple: - don't let me down!

A consumer desktop - do you really think at that level Apple will be putting professional stuff into it?

It needs to be no thinner or thicker than the current MacBook since it'll most likely house the same components.

I think it being thinner will be part the whole "green" thing where it takes less materials to manufacture one...

Keyboard

I would like to see the new mac mini to be just a thick apple keyboard.
If you think about it, when you stip any macbook of its screen and battery, thats what your left with (some have HD in that space). If you could create something this simple that is considered a desktop computer, that would be amazing. Couple that with a wireless display port transmitter and wireless mouse, you have yourself a really good living room computer!

Good idea, but I wouldn't like the fact that the desktop keyboard I throw around would be a fragile piece of equipment.

Taking care of a laptop is different to an external keyboard. I don't treat mine with much respect because it is durable. I'd rather have the desktop unit away from the desk so if there was a spillage (i.e. coffee) then at least it is only a £30 keyboard that needs replaced, not a new machine.

Plus using the Mac Mini all joined together in a huge rack wouldn't be very easy with a keyboard design ;)

The "Small Mac, big performance" ad -- while a lovely image -- makes the mistake of using the ultra-thin weight of Apple's typeface, which was only used once before in ads: to convey the thinness of the Macbook Air. I think this designer may have mistakenly thought this is Apple's new "thin" approach to all their type. It's not.

Just buy a standalone Blu-ray player. We're not getting Blu-ray in Macs for a LONG time.
I got the impression SL was going to support Blu-ray ? (no, I'm not in the beta)
I prefer external drives, one less reason to open the things, and maybe enough space for faster hds. Those slot-ins are temperamental to say the least. Of course, I would use USB to connect ... Apple could ask $501 for the base model, and I could buy the external Blue-ray I want ... :p

Not as thin as the MacBook Air, but as thin as the current MacBook's.

It wouldn't need to be thicker since it'll house the same chipset and most likely similar laptop grade CPU's and a 2.5" SATA hard drive.

You should consider one of these:

Seriously, though, I've thought about that. It would be a cool idea. The Apple II was the same concept.

The advantage of the disconnected wireless keyboard and mouse, though, is no power cable if you're sitting across the room from your display/TV. As you've said, you'd also need wireless HD audio/video. I suppose all that could be worked out, but if you were sitting with the Keyboard Mini on your lap, you'd still need a power cable. Unless, of course, it had a battery. In that case, you might as well just have the bottom portion of a MacBook. Hmmm...
