I had a relative who was was a royalist general in the english civil war
One of my ancestors was a Royalist with a wonderfully romantic story:
flag.jpg
A flag captured by a Royalist to prove that his love for the daughter of a leading Parliamentarian had not weakened his loyalty to the King is to be auctioned more than 350 years after he died while seizing it during one of the bloodiest battles of the English Civil War.
Bernard Brocas, a member of a staunchly Royalist family, had fallen in love with the daughter of their Berkshire neighbour Lord Sandys, who supported Parliament during the bitter conflict that divided England in the 1640s.
According to a label attached to the banner, which is to be sold by Bonhams in London on April 14, Brocas "was taunted by the Royalist party with indifference to their cause". The critics included members of his own family.
The historian Walter Money later wrote that Brocas "took every opportunity of passing his time with this fair mistress much to the dislike of all his relatives, who were staunch Royalists and many of whom had fought at Edgehill - in fact four of his brothers were there.
"Refusing to give up his intended and being told that his loyalty was distrusted and that his mistress would wean him away to her father's side, he took an oath that he would give substantial proof, on the next engagement, of his loyalty and would either bring back a standard or stay in the field."
Brocas's chance to prove his loyalty came at the First Battle of Newbury in September 1643 when the Royalists under Charles I tried to block the return of a Parliamentary army, commanded by the Earl of Essex, after it had relieved the siege of Gloucester. During the battle that followed, more than 6,000 men were killed or wounded before the Royalists withdrew.
The casualties included Brocas who, true to his word, proved his loyalty by capturing a light green silk damask banner woven with a foliage design and bearing the motto Constanter et Fideliter which means "steadily and faithfully".
In doing so he killed the standard bearer, who is thought to have been one of the Hazleriggs, a leading family on the Parliamentary side during the Civil War. Sir Arthur Hazlerigg was a puritan MP who raised a troop of horse for Essex and fought in a number of battles.
Brocas was mortally wounded either during the struggle for the standard or later in the battle and was found dead on the field with the flag beside him.
"It is a story of mixed emotions," said David Williams, head of Bonhams arms and armour department, yesterday.
The auction house expects the banner, which is being sold by a family descendant, to fetch £3,000 to £5,000.
The Brocas family paid a terrible price for supporting the King. Seven of the eight sons of Sir Thomas Brocas, whose Berkshire estate was called Beaurepaire, reflecting their French origins, were killed during the Civil War.

I was friends with Maya Rudolph (actress, SNL, etc) and Miranda July (artist, director, etc) in college. Another college friend ended up marrying Molly Shannon (another ex-SNL). Another friend created a TV series that just completed its first season on HBO. Another is an award-winning independent screenwriter/director.

Oh, there are probably quite a few more (quasi-) celebs that grew up in my hometown, went to my high school or college or whatever, but I'm trying to purposefully stick to first degree of separation.

I'm from Worcester Massachusetts:

This information will not leave you unmoved--only your political leanings will determine whether you are delighted or disappointed--but Sam Seder is also from Worcester
