Have had an account for a few years. Did not go Premium.

Got Watch App working now. But, don't see how to delete an event.

Does it just mirror iPhone?

I can swipe left to see tasks. But, that is all.

Must be missing something.

I did try that before. But, only see 1. Add Event 2. Add Task 3. Refresh
Oops. What I spoke of was for a reminder. Sorry about that. I don’t think you can from the watch.

No Problem, I have two reminders for morning and evening meds. But, I just tap the empty box to complete them. I can swipe left in watch calendar and see task options. But, not very intuitive on what they do. Never really used the watch calendar. So, not familiar with it anyway.

We should be able to delete from the watch. They need to allow the option.

v3 now requires you to sign up for a "Free" flexibits account (you can use Apple Sign in or whatever too) in order for it to work on the watch -- but it isn't working on the watch now anyhow, all you'll get is a red spinning wheel as they rushed to get the update out without testing -- they claim an update has been sent to Apple and waiting approval which fixes that issue.
thanks, I didn't see any mention of requiring this "free" account when the app first auto-updated - non-obvious IMHO, so still trying to figure this out...

is it true that you MUST have this free account to be able to use v2 features with Apple Watch at all?

from what I saw so far on Flexibits site, it sounds like they did this to allow syncing with the Watch over LTE without your phone nearby? but I don't have LTE in my watch (original gen! which was working fine with v2).

aside from that, even with v 3.0.2 on my iPhone, I still can't even see Fantastical in my Watch app on the phone anymore, so I can't even (re-)enable its complication. After initially auto-updating to v3 on my phone, it completely removed the Fantastical app and complications from my original gen Watch, and now I can't get them back. I'm guessing they broke compatibility with WatchOS4.3.2? I emailed support but still haven't gotten a reply...

so much for their promise:
"All of your features from Fantastical 2 are automatically available and do not require a Fantastical Premium subscription...You do not need to do anything special to receive these features, Fantastical will automatically detect your previous purchase and make these features available."

The Calendar366 app and Calendars 5 don’t have the option for the watch either. Will look and see if any of them do.
Yes both do. I have them both running at the moment to test/ play

correct you must have a free cloud account to use the watch widget. This cloud account is used to sync between phone and watch so is storing you event details etc. They say it’s encrypted but have not really provided any details of how so it’s hard to confirm..

The option to delete an event on the watch in calendar66? I didn’t see it.

Just tried, and then bought, Calendar 366. I like the list view and now I’ve got it back. No subscription needed.

The watch complication now can show the full month grid, something the stock app can’t do. I requested that from Fantastical a long time ago, was told they’d add it, and they never did.

Guess that development time went to this BS pointless subscription instead.

Thanks for the tip... looking hard at this one... $15 for Mac, $7 for iOS Universal (iPhone/iPad) and Watch ... looks solid and great reviews...

If I am not mistaken, the cost on the previous model was around $75 dollars for Mac, iPhone, and iPad, unless you got them on sale (which I did). Even so, $40 a year is still cheaper than what they were charging for yearly updates.

Don't take the aforementioned to mean that I don't have a problem with how they handled this new model. I don't think they handled it as good as they could have. I think they could have certainly been more communicative ahead of time, so as to help current customers and prospective customers understand what was going on. The software rollout has certainly been a little buggy for a lot of people. That certainly hasn't helped this situation.

I am not making light of what has occurred. Apple, 1Password and a few others have certainly had this kind of thing happen, and they managed to quell the storm with quick action and better communication. And many of us didn't run away the first time these companies made a mistake.

Like I said earlier, I get many hate subscriptions. Many are mad with the $40 a year. I think they could have had 3 different paid tiers to accommodate the different needs of people the new release features. Maybe that will come to fruition down the road.

Take a step back from the emotions and don't be so quick to abandon ship. If you don't think you need all the new premium features, stick with version 2, if it was working well for you.

Try and be objective while making a final decision about Fantastical. That is what I am doing.

I don't mind paid apps, but you cannot innovate indefinitely with a calendar app. The subscription model just doesn't fit this app.

True. There are different ways they could have done this.

They could have added ads... and made the subscription to get the "ad free" version.

That's what Overcast does. It's free with ads... or you can pay a yearly subscription for no ads and some additional features.

It's my preferred podcast player and I like to support Marco Arment.

So I don't mind paying for that. And it's only $10/year.

But $40/year for a calendar app or $70/year for Evernote is pushing it.

Hell... I pay $100/year for Office 365 and I get an entire freakin' office suite and 1TB of OneDrive storage.

Are we to believe that 2.5 Fantasticals is equal to 1 Microsoft Office? :p

You would think that 40$/year is cheaper than 50$ but you only think this for a year. We used Fantastical 2 almost for 5 years, that would be 10$ / year investment.Do you have this kind of option, no?

There are too many apps that uses sub model correctly. Look at 1Password with a reasonable price, look at tiers on carrot where I did purchase but not selected sub model, and I am not harassed with premium popup all along or I am able to use the app without I even see premium part.

I am not against subscription. I am against overpriced and misused subscription. Fantastical does this now.

"Take a step back from the emotions and don't be so quick to abandon ship. If you don't think you need all the new premium features, stick with version 2, if it was working well for you."

This is literally impossible for many people wondering 3 and updated automatically. You can't go back. It's already have been saved and now your 100% usable app became 30% usable.

Do you think that accuweather license costs 5$/year ? Do you believe that calendar "invitee" and "monthly view that they already provided v2 for free" is premium feature?

They are trying to fool people to ask for more money, this is not acceptable.

Thanks for the tip guys. This looks like a solid/viable option(least for me). I’m testing it now.

We had no option to stay with V2. That’s one of the primary complaints mentioned repeatedly here (hence emotional). We got a v3 forced update that’s now a subscription model. If there was any question as to how dubious this approach was/wasn’t, take note of the option to download v2 back- there isn’t one.

The current version (without subscription) has the same features as the previous plus a couple extra. The only difference is you need to create an account.

I tried to move back to Fantastical 2 on my Mac and my iPhone to give me time to decide what to do. This change came out of nowhere. They could have emailed us a heads up or had a pop in the app notifying us that the next update would be a major version release from 2 -> 3 , not a small minor version update.

Restoring the app file from Time Capsule was easy, but the iPhone version .. I just can't restore it. It looks like Apple Phone backups include data, but always download the apps from the iTunes store.

I also have an app called iMazing for managing my iPhone. I got it last month to backup iMessage, and I just checked and it can keep multiple versions of iPhone apps. However, you have to manually download apps to the iMazing library ahead of time. The iMazing backup feature only backs up data just like Apple's iPhone backup app.

Some of this post was to inform others, and some of it was to vent online. Thanks for reading. Let me know if you have questions about iMazing. I'm a novice at it, but I'll try to help. I originally heard about it on the MacCast podcast and it sounded cool. :)

Correct. There is also a 14 day trial where you can use the premium version. I think you all are just afraid that you will like new "premium" features and be suckered into the subscription. Nobody is forcing you to subscribe and you can still use it for free, just without the "premium" features. If you already paid for V2, you aren't losing anything, in fact you are gaining a few new features as well, I don't understand all this knee jerk negativity.

I didn't even know there was an update until I received an email from MacSparky about his field guide for Fantastical (which is free). I thought it weird that he would be doing a field guide on an app that was a few years old. It was when I started watching the field guide I realized it was updated. I have been using Fantastical since v1 and love it so I will probably go ahead with the subscription. Some of the new "premium" features I like, especially the new proposed meeting times.

The current version has all the same features before this new rollout. There is no real need to try and restore to a different date with a backup.

You install the new version, create an account, and don't subscribe (at all or) past the trial, unless you want to.

The Flexibits website makes it very clear what the new model is and what happens to use paid version 2 users. I even linked to the page.

I agree with your comments about an announcement etc. However, I think a lot of people on here, Twitter, and iMore, are making a lot more out of this subscription than it really is.

Flexibits hasn't taken anything away from us paid version 2 users. All they did was move to a subscription model. And in doing so, they added a few new features for version 2 non subscribers.

Yes, this whole situation could have been handled better. But, unless Flexibits makes a new announcement and policy to ease the pain of subscription for paid users, there really isn't much left to do besides contact the company and voice one's opinion and or vote with the wallet.

I think the main area of contention is that Flexibts has moved to subscription. The comments you made here and those are others across the net, are the same kinds of things that were voiced with 1Password, Apple, and several others companies (at various times).

The MacRumors Forums can be a hotbed at times for some people feeding off the emotions of others, whether good or bad. And before you know it, there are a lot of people overly angry about something simple, or making rash purchase, and then regretting them, because they got caught up in all the forum uproar.

A lot of the executive type business features I don't really have a need for. The weather feature is nice and could save me some money, by not continuing the paid weather subscriptions I already have.

I like the new layout and many of the functions. Flexibits has made a point on their website and online of stating that they already have a lot coming very soon with updates. If some of those new features are ones that I would use, then that is money well spent for me. If conducive updates don't come etc., then I won't continue the yearly subscription.

For those who wonder about whether Calendar 366 can delete events, I can back up the person who said it can. I touched the complication, then made sure the events list was up (center of the three view options), then tapped the top most event to view its details. From there I scrolled down and "Delete" is a button at the bottom.

Thanks for the follow up. I tried hard press and for some reason, when I tried to scroll down earlier, nothing happened. Glad to see 366 has the feature.

Well, there is certainly one thing that we lost from v2 to v3 - the ability to run the watch through the phone. I for one don't have an LTE watch (nor would I enable it if I did), and I don't want it connecting to WiFi everywhere I go. I want it connected to my watch and that is good enough. With v3, you need to set up your accounts on a new cloud server (yet another place where a hack can happen), and you need the watch to communicate directly to the servers, rather than through the phone. So, it would have been nice of them to give you the option to keep the old functionality. Oh, wait, that could have been achieved by making v3 an entirely new app that didn't replace v2. The desire to data mine was just too great.

Also, I have been repeatedly asking Flexibits on Twitter to let me know what the differences are between v2 mode and free mode. I don't get any notification that I'm in v2 mode and when I try to restore purchases under the subscription management page, I'm told there are no purchases under my account. Does anyone know how to ensure you're getting the v2 functionality rather than the free functionality? After all, the watch function was a definite loss of functionality and security.
