A couple more reviews of fantastical and the topic of subscriptions in general for your reading pleasure.

A coverage by Jason Snell of 6colours.

If you want more, you can pay for more—and if you’re a version 2 user who doesn’t like the subscription model, Flexibits isn’t going to force you to upgrade unless you want those new features.

Fantastical not forcing you to upgrade... except that they are unless you want to forever see that Update Available in your AppStore app and forever be unable to use the Update All again...

Exactly. The only way to not force anyone to upgrade would be to make V3 a stand-alone app and keep V2 as-is. Saying that you're not being "forced to upgrade" and the way to not do that is to disable "automatic updates" and not manually tap "update" the app is a laughable argument.

If I am not mistaken, the cost on the previous model was around $75 dollars for Mac, iPhone, and iPad, unless you got them on sale (which I did). Even so, $40 a year is still cheaper than what they were charging for yearly updates.

Don't take the aforementioned to mean that I don't have a problem with how they handled this new model. I don't think they handled it as good as they could have. I think they could have certainly been more communicative ahead of time, so as to help current customers and prospective customers understand what was going on. The software rollout has certainly been a little buggy for a lot of people. That certainly hasn't helped this situation.

I am not making light of what has occurred. Apple, 1Password and a few others have certainly had this kind of thing happen, and they managed to quell the storm with quick action and better communication. And many of us didn't run away the first time these companies made a mistake.

Like I said earlier, I get many hate subscriptions. Many are mad with the $40 a year. I think they could have had 3 different paid tiers to accommodate the different needs of people the new release features. Maybe that will come to fruition down the road.

Take a step back from the emotions and don't be so quick to abandon ship. If you don't think you need all the new premium features, stick with version 2, if it was working well for you.

Try and be objective while making a final decision about Fantastical. That is what I am doing.

I main issue here is that the perceived value for money or lack of. Subscription models only work if the user either sees the value in paying monthly or doesn’t really notice.

By charging 4.99 per month for a subscription they have priced it at the “noticeable” level. So current users and potential new users actually take stock and then make a decision based on value for money and how easy it would be to move to another calendar platform.

If they had made it 0.99 or even 1.99 then it may have just disappeared under the radar.

IMHO value isn’t there at 4.99. Considering you were getting 4/5 years for a standard price up front before.

Also selling it as 4 separate apps (MAC/iPad/iPhone/watch) just doesn’t cut it for me. Realistically in this day and age you should be paying once for a universal app on all and not buying separate.

Office365 is 5.99 a month by comparison also I think part of the problem has been that realistically, why should a calendar app cost so much money.

I do wonder if we will see some serious cut in price like 19.99 for first year or free year of service for users of v2 having been bought in last 6 months or something similar.

If not then there will be serious issues for Flexbits

Sorry they are forcing the update.. In fact the phone/ipad grabs the updates automatically.. I have no way to say just this app never update.. and once it has updated I can't revert back.

I'm quite happy with version 2, I've found no issues with it and would happy stay at version 2.0 until IOS fails to run it, which would likely be another 2 years.

The money I paid for version 2 is now lost to me. I bought something and feel as if it's been stolen from me.

If you have a backup you can restore your app using Apple configurator

I'm so mad at that! I'm trying to find a solution to NOT update an app or more that I do not want to.
Hiding the app is not enough, you still have the update stuck there and it really bothers me:mad:

I think that would only work if you keep the same device due to app thinning. Say you get the new iPhone in October, I’m not sure you can restore individual apps from Apple Configurator. That’s the reasoning I got when I asked about using iMazing to do the same thing.

Ok, I don't know in your specific case, sorry, I was trying to help 😊

Sorry my Bad, was reading on my phone and didn't see the full question..

On my watch I'm only really interested in seeing my next events in a complication, and a list. I have no need or desire to create, delete, or edit an event on my watch.. Screen is too small for that.

My Phone is never very far away from me, and if I'm looking to arrange a meeting then I'll do that on the phone.

I may have missed other posts concerning deleting an event on Watch in Cal366

But, you can do it---Open event and scroll to bottom.

....Still No.

I'm a professional. I've had V2 for years.
Is it indispensable? That's the bar in my mind for subscriptions. No it is not.

The music industry is a good comparison.
Software developers are a bit like the record labels.
After streaming exploded, the relatively expensive CD market lost ground, had to drop in price, and shrank. B*tching & m*aning ensued. But in the end (now), the labels returned to profitability - just with a different business model, much of which is LOW-cost streaming subscriptions. Value is relative and out-in-the-open. Disney+ is 6.99.

Value is relative, and SUBJECTIVE.

Is Disney+ worth $7 to me? Not now I’ve watched the Mandalorian, it’s now worth almost nothing at all. Is Fantastical? Not sure, maybe. This week it has saved me probably 20 emails in calendar back-and-forths to schedule appointments with clients. Is that worth the price of two coffees a month? Maybe, TO ME.

The market for Disney is tens of millions of potential customers. For a calendar app on iOS? A fraction of that.

These comparisons are true, for you. We’ll find out in time if fantastical is worth $40py for enough customers to make it worthwhile. I agree, it’s expensive; but is it WORTH it?

I wouldn’t rush to claim that flexibits HQ is in meltdown either - no one knows how many people will subscribe in 10 days time when the first free trials expire, including them. All we know at the moment is that lots of people are miffed and making noises on Twitter/App Store/MacRumors, as they do whenever an app moves to subscription.

I don’t like subscriptions - I grumbled when Drafts, Day One and Ulysses went subs-only, and I’m not happy about this either. I think Fantastical is 50% too expensive - I also think it’s too early to call whether it’s worked or not, and I don’t think comparing the value of a Disney+ subscription to Fantastical is particularly meaningful, except to you and people in a similar situation.

The yearly cost for Fantastical is $3.33 a month or 39.99 a year.

No, it's $4.99 a month, or $39.99 a year. The "$3.33" is just showing you how much a yearly subscription costs if you break it out over 12 months.
I broke down the subscription price cost per month in my post. It should have been obvious what I was addressing.

Unless some here are lazy, they can look on the Flexbits site for the brow down.

as I said. it was always compromised.
Why everything has to black and white on the internet. It's not. Security is not binary, there's no absolute security but you always can increase or decrease it, and using Jailbreak decreases it substantially. Much more than the checkmate issue, because your device can be compromised remotely and in automated fashion.

Disabled App Store updates to stick wit the version 2.
Update. Oh no it's too late, it is already updated.

Update 2:
Now been using new app on my iPhone for few days, I can tell it works okay, and I generally want to open it more, I like the redesign. Didn't got any constant subscription nagging, and don't need to sign-in anywhere. My initial reaction was too negative. I want to thank Flexibits for all their hard work.

It is expensive. That’s why I have tried now several other calendar apps. Even bought Cal366.

You know what bothers me most in all other apps I have tried?

It is how complicated - and this is my opinion - it is to create a new event compared to Fantastical. Even the full version of Cal366 with its (limited) support of natural language input one can’t compare to Fantastical.

Not sure what I will do. I use the calendar app quite heavy. Creating new events is one of the most elementary things and I love how simple and powerful at the same time Fantastical is in this regards.

However the price is steep in any case.

very steep. The issue is not what they offer now, but if the do plan to offer anything within the next year.
So I made 1 year subscription and see if it's worth it. But I will cancel it if they don't come up with functionalities that would justify this steep price.

It's a calendar! It competes with Apple Calendar which is quite good. So fingers crossed I didn't throw 40 USD for nothing. I am using it but not that often.
This Subscription mania really puts me on the edge...

I am sticking with the non-subscription version of Fantastical.

I do use my watch calendar complication.

I started using Watch Calendar for the Apple Watch for $1.99. It offers a full month calendar.

I like this better than either the stock app or Fantastical for the watch.

Does the Watch Calendar complication display both reminders and calendar entries? If it can't display both, then I'd have to waste two complications, one for the reminders app and one for the calendar app. Combining those is the best thing about Fantastical's complication.

I do not believe it combines with the Reminders app.

I find I use the Reminders app more for lists and my Calander app for my daily schedules and use the notes within them for the information I need for that appointment.

Such a shame. I don't use the calendar app enough to justify $40 a year for a nicer experience. Back to Apple's plodding version for me.

Calendar 366 watch complication displays both reminders and calendar entries. Readdle Calendars 5 doesn’t.
