I also tried using an SK Hynix Gold P31 1TB NVME SSD with Acasis USB4/TB3 enclosure, directly connected to M1 Mac Mini via USB4/TB3 port, and it crashed the Mac instantly. Using the SK Hynix with a JEYI USB3.1 v2 (10Gb/sec) enclosure, directly connected via USB4/TB3/USB C port, worked perfectly fine. Also tried 1TB Samsung EVO Plus SSD with Acasis USB4/TB3 enclosure, and that worked as well (though write speed was only around 1,400, while read speed was around 2,400). I also tried a 1TB PNY CS3030 SSD with the Acasis, and it too worked without crashing the M1 Mac Mini (although the read speed was only 770 and the write speed only 1200). So, it seems as though there is an issue with SK Hynix NVME SSD conflicting with Acasis USB4/TB3 enclosures. This is upsetting since the SK Hynix Gold P31 is a very highly rated and great value PCIe 3x4 SSD. I did contact Apple Support and they have escalated the issue to their engineering department. The SK Hynix/Acasis enclosure crash was a kernel panic. Apple also has a copy of my system logs so they can research. I let Apple Support know that the SK Hynix Gold P31 uses their own Cepheus controller chip, while the Acasis USB4/TB3 enclosure uses the Intel 7440 chip for the USB4/TB3 connection, and a J Micron JMS 583 chip for the USB 3.1 connection. Hope that Apple can address this conflict through a software update (I am currently running MacOS 11.3 beta 1, so still waiting for a fix).
One year later, I saw your comment, may I ask if there is an Acasis USB4/TB3 hard disk enclosure SK Hynix Gold P31 1TB NVME SSD, will the Thunderbolt hard disk enclosure be repaired under the macos Monterey 12.3.1 system in April 2022? M1 chip is used under macbook air, I just bought acasis hard drive case and gold p31

I bought this for my mini

Seems very fast but has a stupidly short usb c cord in the box

@adonis3k thank you for taking the leadership role on this topic. The Orico enclosure is out of stock in Amazon DE, Amazon US, Ali Express, NewEgg US etc..... is there another enclosure you recommend or know of that can achieve the same high speed reliable performance with MacBook M1 Air?

Either one of these..

Got the Acasis USB 4 enclosure today. Pretty speedy.

Hey folks,
Could you please help me to figure out an issue here. I purchased Sabrent EC-SNVE enclosure for WD_Black SN750 1Tb drive. Run it on MBP14 with macOs 12.5 via usb typeC 3.2.
I formatted the drive in two partitions:
One partition as Mac OS Extended for macbook backup.
Second partition as ExFAT in order to use the drive with both Mac and Windows systems.
The speed test shows pretty meh numbers, specially for ExFat format. What did I do wrong?

Looks like this is the product? https://sabrent.com/products/ec-snve

Speeds seem correct to me. USB 3.2 has a limit of 10Gbps - 10 gigabits per second = 1.25 gigabytes per second, which is in line with your figures of 989.03MB/sec and 1020.06MB/sec.

For Time Machine backups you should switch the partition to APFS file format. But note you cannot migrate old backups from macOS extended (at least not easily that I could figure out). It has built in snapshotting, it’s more efficient for newer SSD drives (which didn’t exist when macOS Extended was created).

Thank you for your response guys!
So which format should I use to be able to utilize full speed with both Windows and macOS unlike exfat?

Hi, I originally planned to buy the acasis with a Samsung 980 Pro.

I was wondering how useful may be using this enclosure for editing on DaVinci Resolve 4k 60fps footage and put all sort of libraries/cache/media files there. Because I saw a couple messages out there that basically says you will never see any difference between this enclosure or a classic Samsung T7/ T7 Shield cause of the program litimation and because your needs are satisfied with a 500/600mbs ssd. I'd like to have an honest opinion if it's worth buying it because i will see some improvements on my workflow or if i can save up some money and buy a T7 and keep there all sort of files to edit on a external SSD. Also keep in my that i would use the enclosure/the T7 for multiple hours attached to the Mac and if they both give me the same performance on DaVinci then i prefer to go for the coolest option

P.S.A. Note that I have a Macbook Air M1 256GB storage and 16GB of ram

Thank you!

There are several YouTubers that claim there is no difference and a cheaper/slower will suffice. I’ll link one below.

You should consider the added flexibility of an enclosure though. Today you can stick a 1 or 2 TB SSD in there. If you need a larger size SSD a few years down the road you can swap out the SSD for less than a new external SSD of the same size.

thank you very much! yeah it seems it won't be effective much, indeed, not at all

I have been editing on slow 2.5-inch SATA SSDs for ages. Switched to the ACASIS USB 4 NVMe enclosure and a WD Black SN850 2TB SSD about a year ago and let me tell you, it made a significant difference even for rather small 4k30 projects. While there isn't much of a difference when it comes to import and export speeds, the whole workflow while editing feels a lot snappier in comparison. The difference is especially noticeable on faster machines (e.g. M1 MBP vs. M1 Max MBP). Just my 2 cents on this.

A couple people posted issues with the Acasis TBU 4 enclosure and sk hynix p31. I flashed it with more modern firmware around a year ago (March 2022) - can't remember the version sorry and no way to check I don't think as my old windows laptop I used is now on router duty!

I just recieved my enclosure and this is the only modern nvme I had lying around and so was really hoping that the newer firmware would work - although I'm prepared to get new, more vetted drive if necessary.

Anyways it works! One caveat - at some point this was being used in an old macbook pro 2014 with a m.2 converter to upgrade the original slow m.2 drive, so it was already formatted apfs when I put plugged it in. Perhaps that made a difference. I'm on Ventura 13.2

Speeds are suprisingly decent although don't match the 980 pros etc...

After about 10/15 minutes of speed test checking temps were around 52celcius. I had to stack the thermal pads included although this is absolutely temporary - for this drive, 2mm of thermal pad is definitely needed for the drive to make contact with the case. New thicker thermal pad already ordered. Fairly annoying tbh as loads of people seem to have this issue. I won't be doing any 500gb transfers or anything so don't expect this to be a big issue.
