I agree with you on near-black hair. I myself have brown hair, but I am really attracted to dark hair colors. 
Dark brown for me - which is my natural color. I also like red. Natural blonde hair is okay with me, but I do not understand why so many people insist on trying to be fake blondes - especially the ones who don't keep up with dying their roots - blech!

But as for my favourite, I picked random because I find funky coloured hair (that's done well) to be very appealing. I have a thing for silver/grey/white hair myself and will attempt to tone my own medium-brown hair that way soonish but classic black is well...classy.

So depends on the person's complexion and personality, but I think darker colours are more universal. Most people look good with darker hair whereas relatively fewer people can get away with lighter hair IMO.

I really have an unhealthy infatuation with black hair...and furniture...and cars.
and mj you bring up a good point, people with medium complexions and dark hair....mmmm..good. sorry to let my weirdo out tonight, I'll put him back in that box he crawled out of soon.
I'm gonna go with natural blondes. I know I'm sticking out here and being different, but c'est la vie. Brunettes just haven't worked out.
i have really dark brown hair, so dark that everyone believes that it's just black.. I really dont have a huge preference. Natural color is what i like, as long as it's not gross fake bleach blonde or random bright colors im happy. I voted Dark Brown though because i do tend to like that color as well

OK, reason #454 that I love black is that its much more dramatic. Black hair leads to black eyebrows, black eyelashes, and I am melting at the sight. OK, I'm going to post a pic of my gf... in private forums so pay $25 and you can see her, perfect example of what I'm talking about
I really envy people with light brown hair that has naturally blonde highlights. I've tried to replicate this a few times, but it's not quite the same.

I'm more of a random hair colour person myself. I like all types.
Heck even I bleach my hair blonde and then at times colour it fuchsia, blood red, etc.

No hair is the sexiest! Shaved heads turn me on like nothing else .
But I will say that I don't like clean shaven swimsuit areas, that's just boy-ish.

Also, with red hair people think I'm scottish. I fit in better at the scottish festival.
