Neither are 'gaudy' in the least though.

They are if you're not into that alien-future design that geeks seem to love. A friend of mine at school has the Dell, although I don't recall his plastic being red. Unsightly, nonetheless.

The understated and purposeful Mac Pro screams "professional" much in the same sense IBM systems scream "I mean business." The Dell XPS 700 screams "I'm a complete nerd and I think my computer is a space ship."

The red is actually a little (all right, quite a bit) off - but you can't buy the H2C's in red. I think both have their merits style-wise - especially if you line up a few. I wouldn't touch an Alienware desktop with a barge pole, but as someone who likes the styling of Apple gear I appreciate the XPS and Blackbird systems as much.

The Dell is a little messy inside, if far more effective than the Pro for what the average guy would do at home - but the HP is as considered on the inside as it is on the outside (as the Pro) while being once again more of an entertainment powerhouse. As for Pros being Pro - well buddy, they may look the part but I can say they don't act the part once pushed, unlike other actually professional workstations - and I have a little more than the one lying around.

I guess I'm not that judgemental and more objective due to various factors - and style doesn't mean everything for me, as it clearly does to some. I go for capability over fluff.

If you want fluff, consider the HP's gastropodous foot.
Clearly it's made like that for the sake of appearance
alone. Unlike the Mac Pro's feet, it isn't very practical
at all. As one reviewer puts it:

"A single foot raises the PC of the floor, which HP tells
us can safely support 600lb (about 270kg) [...]
However, knock the Blackbird and it rocks a little,
making it look silly."

I read that as "sillier than it already looks".

Then there's the optical drives. Apparently these have
had to be mounted sideways to accommodate the largely
superficial design choices.

Oh, and the "art panels" on the sides can be replaced
with other (no doubt ugly) variants. So you can't say
the HP is fluff-free. By the sound of it, fluffier than a
goose-down duvet.

I have yet to find what is so incapable about my Mac Pro, and what is so great about any Dell. I have yet to have one problem with any of my Macs, and on the flip side, I can yet to describe a pleasant or useful time using any Dell or HP for anything. Yes, I know you say you've had opposite experiences, you can spare me the anecdotes. I've heard more than my fair share of your lamentations about how important your work is at how you need an ultra reliable Dell, and everything Apple makes is just garbage. From my experience, I just find it hard to believe that you've had such a difficult time for any reason other than your own. I'm not going to change my beliefs or trade my Mac Pro in for a hideous Dell because of your constant anti-Apple rants, as I'm sure you're (obviously) feel the same way about my anti-Dell rants. But I don't understand why you still float around a community with the word "Mac" in it's name posting nonsense like the above.

And as for Dells or any PCs being "way more capable" than a Mac Pro... I'm sorry, I guess I'm not so godlike as yourself as to be willing to make Windows work flawlessly for me. I don't want to sacrifice the effort into doing so. I bow to your patience.

This thread is about our favorite Mac Pro features. One of mine is it's impressive styling, which clearly trumps the sci-fi channel Dell and the HP tower mounted on a giant ugly foot for no apparent reason. That alone would be the reason for me not to buy any of those products, if not combined with how ugly they are or how crude the software that runs on that system tends to feel in comparison.

Any time any enthusiast of Apple products dares to mention style, PC people immediately blow it off as "psh, style doesn't mean everything..." and criticize Apple people for talking about style so much, in a resentful rage. Of course nobody buys something solely on style, at least I would hope not. But the Mac Pro is an extremely powerful computer, and looks really damn nice, something that can't be said for most computers in it's class.

Yep, what's with that? I mean, what's their marketing strategy here?
Buy our computer: it has a ... err ... foot.
