I'm no supporter of the FBI in this situation, but I know a little bit about military security.

And this is the dumbest thing the director could have said. Shouldn't a weakness like "we can't get into these specific phones" be classified? Why would you announce that? That's like saying (during the Cold War) "Hey Russia, we can't launch our ICBMs on February 29th because of a date bug, so if you want to start World War III do it on that date."

If they took this seriously AT ALL, they wouldn't have made this announcement. It's just one more proof that this is a political game more than anything.

Man, that San Bernardino shooter should feel real bad for getting an iPhone 5C instead of a 5S.
It was a work supplied phone from the health department he was employed. The ignorance (not directed at you in the least, but others) in this thread who haven't been following this story from the beginning is astounding. The two terrorists destroyed their personal phones, that should tell you that there was nothing of consequence on this phone.

Furthermore if there was the FBI would be spiking the ball and painting Apple in a bad light for not assisting them further. In an effort to turn public opinion around, seeing that the FBI has said yeah we broke in, but won't elaborate further, says there was nothing there.

It would come out either way the next time they try to force Apple into a back door. They might as well say it now and then they have more leverage against Apple in the future, and possibly to try to pressure Congress into legislating backdoors into phones so the scary terrorists can't keep their data safe.

What? No it isn't, and was never marketed as such. It's an iPhone 5 in a different shell.
Are you sure? I mean really sure?
iPhone 5 press release page. The word ‘New’ mentioned 26 times.

iPhone 6 press release page. The word ‘New’ mentioned 24 times - 2 less, (quite a few of those to do with the size).

Phil Schiller at approx 00:15:00, I quote, “The NEW iPhone5 is just 7.6mm thin……”

There is more but I just thought I’d start with that.

Again, are you sure? I mean really sure?

But the iphone 5c is "newer" than the iphone 5s
Nope. Launched same day.
It was a repacked old iPhone 5 hardware, in a new shell, that was very clear at release.

What are you even trying to show. iPhone 5 *was* all new, when it was new... WTF.

It wasn't an opinion; it was a misstatement of facts. That's what set the previous poster off.
Fact: Apple said it would have to write a new backdoor that would take a great deal of time and resources.
Fact: An outside company was able to access it in no time at all.
Fact: Apple was either lying or incapable.

These facts do not care whether or not you believe in them.

i dont trust this statement. it may be true, but at the same time its not in their interest to tell us they can do this on all iPhones. It's in their interest for iPhone users to be comfortable and communicate with their privacy in mind. It makes no sense for them to admit this.

How are you justifying your claim that the iPhone 5c was "newer" than the 5s by citing a press release about the iPhone 5? The 5c was released with the 5s a year after the 5. Of course the iPhone 5 was a new phone when it was released.

Why do you think the outside company was able to do it in no time at all? I would think it was tool sitting in their tool box since it is the type of thing they do for a living.

I think I recall reading that apple said it would take 10 engineers two weeks, at least. We don't know how many engineers were working on this at the outside company but didn't it take about two weeks? Assuming they didn't start working on such a tool until the FBI approached them.

Umm ... You've quoted an article about the 5. The 5C was released the following year when the 5S was, that was just the iPhone 5 in a different shell. The 5C was never marketed as a new flagship phone, but as a lower cost alternative to the 5S.

So yes, I'm really, really sure that the 5C was never marketed as 'newer' than the 5S.

Exactly. The statement, if anything, proves that it's all a charade.
But taxpayers like to be fooled, and paid a premium to do so.

Lol if a hacker were to break into a computer system and not explain to the company how they did it, they'd go to jail, how is this different?
Because security, think of the children.

This hacking organization, that helped the FBI, is in another country.

The FBI shouldn't have to explain anything, they went to Apple, who said no way and then got it done through someone else, that simple. The last thing Apple deserves is an explanation of how someone else was able to do in two weeks what they claimed couldn't be done at all, Apple either lied about it or weren't qualified to do it.

Lol, you clearly do not understand what has been going on here.

So all these twist and show just so to convince people that they need to upgrade their iPhone. Nice play Apple! :D

Except they gave the tools to the FBI who in turn used them on the iPhone 5C. So if the government is willing to jail a hacker for breaking into a computer if they don't tell the company how they did it, how is this different since an FBI hacker broke into a mobile computer and is not telling them how to fix the security hole.

To put it another way:
If I just told you a hacker broke into a computer to find information should they be arrested without explaining anything else to you, you might be apt to say they need to go to jail.

But since this hacker is a government entity it is free from it's own laws that it is designed to uphold?

Yes, unless the goal is to set the stage for the next "attempt" or they have access to a different undisclosed hack that works on newer models or...
It's the "what if" game and the FBI/DOJ wants us all to play it.

My bad. I misspelt when I made a quick Google search and Google changed my search request as it does when it thinks you’ve mistyped. As it is, yes I made a mistake.
Nevertheless it’s certainly marketed as a new device. We’re not talking about a mild facelift as you get with a car here.
