They should investigate Apple for all sorts of Apps that they reject from the AppStore like Slingbox for one!!!

What's going to come out of this will be FCC (not Apple or AT&T) approval of apps on smartphones. Anyone who thinks the consumer is going to draw the long straw in that case hasn't been paying attention.

Great I am sure the FCC will approve 1 app every 6 months. :D

Perhaps Apple is developng their own version of Google Voice and didn't want to approve Google's. If you want Google Voice you can buy an Android and go play in their world.

Next thing you know they will be telling Apple that they can't approve an App unless there is a similiar one available for BB, Windows and Android.

My gosh the site name should be changed to MacWhiners.

SO let me understand this... the iphone can transcribe voice mail into text and email those to me?

And the iphone can also act as a call routing system that will simultaneously forward calls to a single number to all other numbers I choose?

Oh and the iphone also allows me to screen callers leaving voicemail or to screen all callers calling me?

WOW>.. please tell me how to activate those features the iphone already has cause I would love to start using them...

(As stated previously by another poster, you have no idea what you are talking about.)

Someone just got owned :)

UGH.

people who are complaining about Google "piggybacking" or using AT&T's voice network have NO F'N CLUE what Google Voice actually does or how it works.

if you don't know, then research first before you look like an idiot.

I never said it replaces ALL functions. I merely used proper english and said it replaces functions the iPhone already has. And it does.

so do plenty of other Apps that have been on the app store for ages.

there's DOZENS of other apps that allow you to send free SMS, yet those weren't removed... just to name one example.

it's clear you don't really quite understand fully what Google Voice does/is/how it works. even that FCC complaint mistakenly claims that Google Voice has VOIP functionality, it does NOT.

why are you making these statements over and over?

many people know exactly what google voice does....

That may be. Who knows. But could you give me a link to an app in the app store that allows sms text messages to be sent over AT&T's 3G cell towers ?

Using 3G on a non-jailbroken registered iPhone.

i said it twice, yeesh.

it just needed to be said and clarified that Google Voice has zero to do with VOIP or using AT&T's voice network, because clearly some people in here who have never used GV think it does, and as someone who has had a Grand Central account for 2.5 years, just wanted to clarify.

.
plenty.

Textfree Unlimited for example:

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=305925151&mt=8

but also... if you forward your Google Voice # to your iPhone, the SMS's use up your AT&T text messages, they're not "free", only via the web app (which you can still use) or the declined Google Voice App are they essentially free.

That app uses WiFi not 3G.

Good try though!!

uhm, no, it works over 3G too... (or are you confusing data vs. voice network?)
you don't have to be connected to Wifi (well if you're using an iPod Touch you do obviously) for it to send, try it yourself, there's a free version:

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=305928665&mt=8

but nice TRY on your end once again.

edit: here's other apps that do the same:

FreeSMS
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=317787680&mt=8

iText Free

Unlimited SMS

touchTXT (made by AOL no less)
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=303320388&mt=8

Ok. Now I see part of the picture..Thanks for that info.

In the future you might try being a bit less condescending though.:)

So then what happens if a person that has a data plan with sms on the AT&T network decides to drop the data and sms plan from their iPhone ?
Is the person relegated to WiFi only ? Or can the person still use AT&T's cell towers.

sorry, i was mostly annoyed at the above poster's response i guess.

it's just frustrating to read so many comments by people who obviously hadn't used Google Voice yet to know exactly what it does/is. :p

what i'm curious about is... what is stopping Google from no longer allowing Apple to use Google Maps inside their iPhone app? if Apple is going to play hardball that way, i wish Google would do the same.

ironically enough, most likely anyone who gets fed up enough to switch away from the iPhone is going to either go with a Palm Pre or one of the numerous upcoming Android devices.

and for me it's not just Google Voice app that i'm upset/annoyed about, it's the overall inconsistency about their app store process (i'm a developer myself, so it effects/interests me greatly), and that they can just yank an app that has been onsale for months already, leaving those of us who purchased it out to dry.

i think more than anything people want to know if this decision was driven by AT&T or Apple, that's a start.

you could send SMS without a data plan (and just pay per SMS), but for any other data apps (even the built-in stuff, email, maps, weather, etc.) you could only use them via wi-fi

i agree completely

it'll really be interesting to see if this eventually ends up as a turning point or a last straw for the App Store for many people. with the whole FCC filings, i think this could get pretty interesting

and the fact that you can use Google Voice just fine on a BlackBerry on AT&T (or Slingplayer over 3G for that matter... *sigh*)

p.s. it's August 1st and we STILL don't have MMS on AT&T?

True, if something here is showing Apple in bad light it's instantly swamped with negatives.

And in other news, two more carriers in Sweden started selling iPhones this week, bringing it to a total of three. As expected, the first new kid on the block has lower prices than the old kid, the second new kid is undercutting them both, and the old kid (my carrier) is probably preparing their response right now. Very timely for me since my 12-month iPhone 3G contract just expired. Lovin' the competition we have in this "socialist" part of the world. :D

Earlier today I received an MMS that was obviously sent to the wrong number. I've had text messages before that weren't intended for me, but never an MMS, it's way weirder... just a picture of four random douches smiling behind a strawberry cake.
