No, he didn't say that. He said netbooks are not good at anything. That's completely different than saying iPad is to be treated like a computer. His point, in fact, is that iPad is to be treated like an appliance that just get the job done.
It's my job to make sure that my app works regardless of how much RAM it has available. I bet you want multitasking, right? If so, when Apple implements multitasking, you won't even get all the memory to yourself. All I need to know as a developer is how much virtual address space I have, and then I have to test it under various conditions to make sure performance is ok.

I just keep having a hard time justifying purchasing one of these without a camera. That's so huge as far as what it would enable it to do.

Not a fair comparison - would you need to know the horsepower of your car engine would be a better analogy - yet that would smack-down your entire premise. it is important to know the RAM of the iPad for future-proofing reasons and the ability to jude how well it will ultimately multi-task. Why is that hard for you to understand? RAM is a HUGE issue in performance and should not be overlooked when it comes to specifications and the desire to know. The amount of RAM directly impacts my desire to buy one and that of others, so it is NOT out of line to ask and answer.

On the contrary, Apple shouldn't be able to invoke any confidentiality clause. The issue of spectrum pollution is in the public interest, which is why the FCC gets to review submissions in the first place. Since they do, any American should be able to. Government departments are only servants of the people, working on behalf of them - only the military/police get the privilege to hide data from their employers, and only in limited (but increasingly abused) circumstances.
But I expect an Apple employee with a good sense of marketing provided this PDF.
If you look in the App Store for "Pad Info" which can be viewed at http://appshopper.com/utilities/pad-info you will see the device apparently contains 4GB of RAM.
I wonder if that is real or just a number that the simulator puts out?
We're gonna get there, and I would certainly like a 256GB iPad as then I could synch a good portion of my iTunes content. Remains to be seen if they can achieve this kind of capacity growth while maintaining the current pricepoints.
