That's because it is a composting application not an NLE....

Wouldn't you expect to do more rendering in a 3D application over FCP?

If what you say is true then why does a feathered clip in FC 7 need to be rendered? You seem to be saying the the older Final Cut did it right and the new Final Cut ruined that.

But if both of them require rendering what makes FC 7 so much more 'right' than the new one?

Now you're just being intentionally obtuse. Add some stupid effect to a clip and render. Then add motion blur to a clip and render. Notice the times aren't the same? Just because you have to render something doesn't make it identical.

So what I am saying is more code you have to go through the LONGER it takes to get a job done. I didn't say it was instantaneous not going through the additional code I'm saying it takes longer going through the additional code. I can't believe you have survived life as long as you have...

But what's different between Final Cut 7 and Final Cut X?

Why is it worse now than it was before? That was the entire point of your first post, that they made it worse. What's worse?

Just put your head back in the sand. I have explained this about 5 times in this thread and you just have to have the final say twisting **** around to further your feeling of superiority. Go read a book and maybe learn about the box you are smashing your knuckles against replying to me. I don't need to explain how software works again.

This may shock you, but repeatedly having to post that I don't understand something while being called [names] does NOT make me feel superior. You think I really understand all this and am doing this for fun?

Clearly we're stuck, so I'll stop asking. But no, me saying "I don't know" doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Wow, what I started by forgetting that you can do it with a simple feathered mask.... without a trip to Motion.

It is amazing how folks can get enraged about a tool.

WRP,

You're fighting a losing battle here. I understand completely where you're coming from. FCP has had feathering capabilities for each clip without adding an additional effect since as far back as I can remember. Apple, for whatever reason, pulled it from FCP X.

The fact that the "solution" is to buy Motion, build the effect you want and send that effect to FCP X is ridiculous for something this basic. It might be an effect in Avid, but again, it's a basic effect and it's included, ready to use.

I have a love/hate relationship with X. I've been fooling around with it, and finding a lot of nice things... then I hit the one bad thing-- a basic feature that missing or a feature that isn't working correctly-- and I want to put my head through the monitor.

The biggest frustration for me is the fact that in the viewer/canvas/whatever window, there is no visual indication that you set an I/O point on a particular clip except for the yellow selection bar thingy in the events panel. So infuriating when you're on a dual monitor and you keep having to bounce from one screen to the next to see if you set an I/O point.
