The Google search on MR does essentially the same thing as what MRoogle does, it adds the argument "site:forums.macrumors.com" to the search. MRoogle just offers those little links above the search box that help refine the search to one area of the site. That's all.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant by MR-custom options. It's a pain to add them via the standard Google search.

FWIW I don't like vB4 and I don't see why so many people here want the update. The site now feels rather smooth but for me it's always been up and down so I thought it was just a good day.

Not Google search. MRoogle which is google tweaked with several MR-custom options. And yes, it is far, far, far better than the VB search. I don't think you yourself use the VB search much, or you would realise how dire it is.

Another bonus - using MRoogle will take some load off your servers.

No need to take my word for it. Ask around the mods and subscribers, maybe poll them?

I actually haven't used MRoogle in ages. In part because there are certain areas of the site that Google (which is all MRoogle is) can't access. It almost always returns what I'm looking for now, if it exists at MacRumors.

MRoogle = Google Search for forums. if you're searching the forums specifically, it's the exact same results. Try it yourself, and it's already a default option on the forums.

Recently when I click on a user's link, after checking for new posts, the URL goes into Safari, but the page doesn't load I receive the following error message:

Safari can’t open the page “https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=9312448&posted=1#post9312448”. The error was: “bad server response” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011) Please choose Report Bugs to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.

Then when I press return, the page then loads.

Before this happened once in a blue moon. Now it happens often.

MRoogle also allows you to use Google filters, such as limiting a search to threads/posts within the past year. I try to minimize typing, so I like being able to highlight a word or phrase, right-click, and do a MRoogle search without typing anything, having the search results automatically limited to the past year.

The advanced VB search allows you to limit the timeframe also. Of course you're not going to (probably) get a right click search.

But the advanced VB search isn't using the Google search engine, right? It sounds like either be able to limit the timeframe or use Google to search the forum. With MRoogle, you can have both. Or am I missing something?

Correct. The "VB Search" itself is not Google.

If google was made the default search (and I'm speaking as a user as I have no say anyway) it still wouldn't work like you want. It wouldn't auto restrict to a year or any timeframe. You'd have to choose from a list most likely in which case I'm guessing you'd still use your right click search.

I usually use the advanced search and the results to me seem to be just as good as Google.

I have the one-year restriction built-in to the right-click search, so I never have to select it. Very convenient. The VB advanced search is still a good tool, such as when you want to restrict a search to one forum or to thread titles only.

arn, it seems my issue with pages not loading is no longer an issue.

I cleared my cache and cookies per your suggestion. It looks like that may have done the trick. Thanks! :)

I've noticed something different in the past few days. When a new post shows up on Forum Spy, if you click the link and read the post, then view the poster's profile and click either "Find all posts" or "Find all threads", the most recent post/thread doesn't show up. Sometimes it takes 3-5 minutes before a post shows up, where it used to happen instantly.

This is not something I could repeat each time but it does appear to happen.

It happened with this thread/poster: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=9318922#post9318922
And did not happen with this thread/poster:
https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=9318911#post9318911

Note that the second link was clicked on 1 minute (according to the time stamp) after it was created whereas the first link was clicked on exactly the second it showed in Forum Spy.

When using the VB advanced search, if I attempt to use any date filter, I get this result:
Picture 1.JPG

For example, I searched for "GarageBand" in "thread titles only" within the past year.

Thanks for responding on this. I guess the VB search seems to have improved now since I last used it.
