i have a 15" RMBP with 27" Thunderbolt display and new iPad4

i dont do anything special but browsing and have a nice media library.

do i feel bad? no because i am a professional, make a good living, and i buy the things i want with the money i earned.

now do I need all this?

answer is no, I can get by easily with a Macbook Air or CMBP and any external monitor and I'll have the same setup

dont feel bad, just be grateful and live life, reasonably..

Hehe, I have the same gadgets that you do and I sometimes feel like I should have invested/saved the money. I only need an Air, really. Oh well...

No reason to feel bad.

Consider your high end laptop an investment. Yes it can do a lot more than what you use it for but in the next 5-10 years you will still be able to use it for what you have been and not worry about it slowing down.

Where as if you bought a cheaper laptop it might not last you the same amout of time.

Well It's more to it than servers. There's AD, LDAP, OSI model, what port the software listens on, the appliances, the engineering of all that, the implementation of it, and the trouble shooting. With the exception of poor management and the stupid cloud I enjoy it.

One day the cloud will fall and it is going to be a glorious day for everyone in IT. "We should put the file and print server in the cloud" - der ya great idea because we have infinite bandwidth over the WAN.

Agreed. I'm currently juggling writing programs (work, school and personal) with multiple platforms, languages and IDEs. I know I'm the 1% out there but I'm going for a Mac Pro (when the new ones are out) because I'm currently using a triple monitor setup which is just about adequate. The stuff you said about data structures, oh man. Totally spot on. Except the last part, I'm the opposite of you. Love to sit for days on end coding (last coding session was 3 straight days, got up only for food and bathroom). Tinkering with hardware? I enjoy it but to a much lesser degree.

The screen real estate of any rMBP (13" and 15" pixel resolution are relatively close) is a huge boon for coders. It's simply incredible.

LOL! :D

I recently got my retina and it is great!

i run it at 2800x1800 the screen space is amazing. Im a CS major and I code javascript and c++. It great to see all my code in several pages. I always refer to my old codes so have 2 code pages open at once is great!

The 2800x1800 res will never let you down. I also use this machine for dreamwaver. I can see my html and live page at the same time with out any issues it is just great.

If you start to do photography you wont regret your machine. Lightroom on the retina is superb I don't think I can use another low res screen again. Dont worry if you dont take advantage of its full capacity. I spend 60% of the time browsing and 40% of actual work. This is a great luxury to browse on.

I do feel bad about those who have nothing to eat. But this is an Apple Forum after all right? This thread was shooting more for those who already have a computer but yet can't afford the more expensive machine. Thank you for the post but I don't need anyone telling me about helping others, I help my family and friends. And I came here to talk about "technology" not those less fortunate when it comes to "food & housing"
People come to this site to talk about more than technology. Your post is about guilt, mostly. But good for you for worrying about other things too. You're very awesome.

I'm student, I don't work and I'm not planing to and I make all my money on internet. When Haswell comes, I will be buying 15 rMBP for 20% coding/graphics stuff and 80% movies, music, internet, little gaming etc. and I already feel bad about it since I will be spending 70% money I have on stupid laptop while I built $1500 gaming pc half year ago (will probably sell). I do and don't want it but I will get it because I just love it.

I think the only time to regret it is if you bought it when you couldn't afford it or spent the money when you had other things you needed more. Just to own something nice and enjoy it, whether or not you need it, should not provide a feeling of guilt. If you earned the money, can afford it comfortably and enjoy it...good on ya.

I feel bad i got a 15' MBPr cause now my wife wants a 13" :(
Exactly.

I was the first "convert" in my family to Apple products years ago. Soon thereafter I'm buying Macs, iPads, AppleCare, iPhones and gazillion dollar data plans for everyone.

Had I simply stayed in the Windows realm I'd have a condo in Jamaica by now.

If you do any kind of work with photography--even just taking and viewing pictures--that is reason enough to have a rMBP--I can't look at pictures on anything else anymore. :)

You worded to pay for it, why feel bad? Enjoy you prize for your hard word and worry about know one else.
