The whole image/logo factor that some stereotype others as the reason they purchase an iPhone is ridiculous.

The Apple is a status symbol, no doubt about it. How many cars do you see with the little Apple in the corner of their window? Now how Many Android stickers do you see? Windows? Blackberry? Yeah... it's a status symbol, whether you want to believe it or not. Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not. It is what it is.

'The day after we shipped this iMac a year ago, we started working on the next one. And today we're introducing an all-new iMac. Continuing down the road of this ultimate desktop architecture. We're gonna make a great computer even better,' said Steve Jobs in the Apple Special Music Event 2005.

'So before we end today, I'd like to just say thanks to the teams that have worked their tails off for the last 18 months to create the iPhone 4,' said Steve Jobs in the Apple WWDC 2010.

It's the quality that matters, not quantity.

People are allow to be Apple fans. Doesn't mean they purchase for status. And let's face it, the Apple symbol is nice looking. Even if I was a diehard MS or BB fan, their logo would not look right on anything but their products. The Apple symbol looks pretty good anywhere. Not to mention, who else includes their logo stickers within the packaging? Apple was pretty smart to do that.

People are allowed to be Windows fans too. in fact, way more people use Windows than any Apple OS. They are still not plastering the Windows logo on their cars and things.

I have a hard time believing that people are placing the Apple on their automobiles just to spruce up the look of the car a little. You wear a logo because you want to be associated with that logo. This goes with everything, not just Apple. I find the coca cola text to be pretty attractive. You won't see people slapping the coke sign on their car unless they like coke, no matter how good it looks.

As far as packaging, the MS store does the same thing, I believe. I have yet to see one on a car though.

I guess my point is that you are entitled to your opinion, but saying that others feel it's a status symbol is RIDICULOUS, how you put it, is a bit overboard. You have no more evidence (in fact less) that it is NOT a status symbol in peoples eyes than that it is...

To be honest, I have seen quite a few little Android guys popping up
Yes, I have seen my share of Apple logos, but to imply there are no Android guys being used as badges of honor is disingenuous

People who are fans of a certain company or brand absolutely do the same. I see many cars with Harley stickers. Harley has a fan base cause they make great bikes and have an unmatched unique sound. Same goes with Apple, it's unique from the rest. Does it mean it's better? NO ..... But people who are fans will not experience it's likeness elsewhere.

Now I can't claim my previous statements for every single individual. I'm pretty sure some feel it as a status symbol. I was speaking in general for the majority, just like those stereotyping millions of sales based on status is speaking in general.

BTW .... Lately I've seen just as much of the "Android boy pissing on the Apple logo" stickers as I see Apple stickers. If logos mean status in your eyes, then what do you make of that?

we'll find out if apple really is scrambling if they decide to release a smaller ipad. what was that thing that jobs said about the sand paper and 7" tablets?

Just to put my 2 cents in here. When I wanted an iPhone, I knew NOTHING about Apple Corp. I had never used a Mac. Never laid eyes on an iPhone.

I did see some of the keynote when Steve Jobs first presented the iPhone and gave the world something it had never seen before.

After dealing with my S H I T T Y HTC Windows phone, and my less than great Blackberry Storm, it just drew me in. Somehow I knew it would be a great product.

It was.

Status my arse, I just wanted a damn phone that did what an iPhone did, and did it well. If people associate that with status, so be it. I will always remember my iP4 (had to wait that long because I was on contract and Telus wasn't carrying them since Rogers had the initial agreement with Apple) as my first reliable and consistent smartphone and that would never have happened without Steve Jobs at the helm.

If you don't think Harley is a status symbol for these people, I have little more to tell you. People that drive Harleys want everyone to know it. It IS a status symbol. They are "cool", "badass", etc. etc...

Those stickers mean they are classless idiots.

BTW, the sticker isn't the status symbol. That's never what I said. The product is. The sticker is just a way to tell the world you own/use/love said product.

It's a good thing I wasn't implying that there are no Android guys out there then. :)

That's fair. You didn't pick it as a status symbol. Plenty of people don't. All I am saying though, is that plenty of people do.

Thing about Harleys (I have a big twin): how cool and badass they are just comes with the territory, haha.

I'm fine with the 12 month(typically) release schedule. First, pretty much everyone is on two year contracts. Which means one upgrade every two years. Most of the American public can't afford to drop $650 on an off contract phone. It wouldn't really matter if they released a new one every six months, overall sales numbers wouldn't be greatly effected. I'm sure some folks were eligible for upgrade from the iPhone 4 that didn't want to wait the few extra months on the iPhone and bought the GS3. But, those are going to the minority. A lot of those defectors were ready to change anyways. I truly don't think the release schedule effects sales in any meaningful way.

Is Apple scared and/or worried about Samsung. No. Are they very observant and keep a close eye on what they are doing and what's selling? Of course, particularly since the GS3 is outselling the iPhone.(which should be taken with a grain of salt as the 4S is almost a year old with most iPhone fans waiting on the 5 at this point and the GS3 is the hot new phone)

I like when I have that feeling of needing to have the new phone. For example, when they announced the 3G and the iPhone 4... I felt like I HAD to have it right away. With the 3GS and the 4S, I saw the benefits, but I hated knowing that this was all that we got in the way of upgrades for at least a year.

Ha! I disagree!

The iPhone 3G and iPhone 4 were the skippable ones. The iPhone 3G was slow and out-dated when it was released, and the iPhone 4 had a mess of problems (antennagate, anyone?).

The iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S are optimized, beefed up, and PERFECTED versions of the previous models. They were the ones to get!

I was sort of the same when I first discovered the iPhone. Actually I had a 2nd Gen iPod for my first Apple product.

Then I started getting interested in smartphones and was in contract with Tmob. I started researching phones a little and became interested in the HTC 'Dash', lol. I kept hearing about Apple coming out with this phone soon and became one of the haters downplaying everything about it to everyone I knew. I didn't give a CRAP about an iPhone, my Dash would be so much better, lol, wow, little did I know then...

I was online the night before the big event and began seeing this new Apple device EVERYWHERE and talk about it EVERYWHERE, online, forums, television....before I knew it, I was caught up in the hype! The next day when the phone released, I knew I had to have one! It just HAD to be in my possession!

Well I was at the beginning of my contract with TMob and couldn't quite afford the iPhone was the only thing holding me back at first. My father won a Sidekick II and didn't want it so gave it to me. For the next 2 years I rocked that sidekick to pieces!! lol.

Finally my contract was up and I bought a 3GS on launch day and made the switch to AT&T. That was one of the greatest days of my life! lol, I had waited SO long and stayed SO patient.

Anyways, my wife and I are long over-due for our upgrades so this new iPhone will be a so worth the wait as my 3GS has seen it's better days and my wife's 3G is on it's last leg.

I might add that I have several Apple logo stickers from years past and I've never put one on my car, I see them everywhere though and it's not that I wouldn't put it on a car, I just won't put it on my ****ty car as it would be a disgrace to the logo, lol. I did put one on my PC tower though, just for the hell of it and the fact that I use my Apple products in conjunction with my PC so it's fitting for me anyways. ;)

Back when I was getting interested in smartphones I used to tell my wife and family members and friends that smartphones are the future of mobile computing I don't think anyone really listened, now every one of them has one (mostly iPhones), lol.

Which leads me to say I'm sort of amused at how many people I see with iPhones these days. I mean, I'm beginning to notice more and more folks with their android devices as well but the iPhone is still prominent everywhere around here. It's kind of funny to see that what was once an exclusivity style device is now in the hands of every young teenage girl to your grandmother these days. In fact it kind of irks me to hear them talk about their phones like they "know" something about phones just because they have iPhones, lol, or maybe I just have a bad attitude about it somedays.

Ok, I'm gonna stop now, didn't mean to get this long winded, just wanted to share...:D

I think your generally confusing the average person's pride as them trying to be part of a status or gain reputation.

I never really thought of it that way, so I guess you're right to an extent. BUT... leading up to the iPhone 4, we did not know about AntennaGate. I pre-ordered the phone and stood in line for over half a day at my local apple store. That was nuts, made a couple good friends that day actually.

And going from the first gen iPhone to the 3G felt like a HUGE upgrade, especially with the launch of the App store. I can't even remember the days of not having it anymore.

a little fyi...att is the one who profits most from 12+ month releases simply put the customer is available for a contract extension......bottom line att makes more money apple makes more money from selling the upgrade...cmon sheep wake up and smell the haggus.....

Perhaps for SOME people there was an antenna issue, but I got the iP4 and it has worked AMAZING. No issues, no problems, no complaints and I would never use a bumper on the phone! Have used it in a case and naked. Battery is supposedly better with the iP4 compared to 4S from what I hear. Other than Siri which wasn't incorporated with the iP4, there is not really one thing that the iP4S can do that the iP4 can't. At least I don't believe so...
