I was wondering if there are any groups of D&D players on the MacRumors forum? Are there enough people interested to form a group? I saw in the thread “What did people used to do before the internet?” that there were a few people who talked about Dungeons and Dragons.

Since the game is going through a bit of a revival due to all the content on YouTube like Critical Role, and the various celebrity groups who are posting their games online, I thought it might be interesting to play again.

I appreciate a lot of older folks may not have played for a long time, so I’d point out that the most recent version of the player rules, the 5th edition Players Handbook, is available for free on www.dndbeyond.com

I played with a local group for a couple of years using Discord, Roll20 and DNDBeyond. It seemed to work out really great. Then I had knee replacement surgery and once it healed I found I couldn’t sit still and was always gone when we played (Saturday nights). I’d love to rejoin a group.

Somewhere I have the original players handbook and monster manual.

Yep, I’m old.

I played Adventurer's League for a minute; that used the Discord/Roll20/D&DBeyond combo...
Discord for voice chat, Roll20 for the DM to show maps and the such, and D&DBeyond for character sheets & dice rolls...

Don't have any of my old books (nor any of my new ones), but I fondly remember opening that original pack of three small booklets way back in the day...!

Signed, another Old Timer... ;^p

With D&D One on the horizon, and D&DBeyond growing into a one-stop resource, I might have to look into resurrecting some old characters...

Played way back in the day but have never found local groups that fit my schedule.

Chaotic Neutral FTW!

D&D basic red set from 1983 to 1986. Mechwarrior from 1986 to 1992, AD&D from 1992 to 1994. Rolemaster from 1994 to 2000.

I moved a state over in 2000 and haven't had a regular group in 23 years.

All my experience is AD&D 2nd Edition. I've had maybe one experience with 5th Edition, but the DM and his friends were basically man-chillds so it didn't really amount to much.

Rolemaster is my preferred game, but I'm always willing to play almost anything.

And for the record - I have all my books. AD&D 2nd Edition and the reprints and all the books from that time period. Rolemaster 2nd Edition, all the books (except one, which I intentionally did not get). And EVERY 1st Edition manual/book FASA produced for MechWarrior/Battletech from 1986 up into the early 90s when they switched to MW2.0. Also, most of the ShadowRun 1st Edition books as well.

I also have all the RM 2nd Edition books in PDF and the 2nd Edition AD&D Players Handbook and Dungeon Master Guide in PDF.

I sat down to play a D&D starter version with the grandkids, opened the box, got out the directions, flipped though the volume of rules, and told them maybe we can play in a day or two. We never did play…

That's generally how AD&D players feel about Chartmaster, Rulesmaster Rolemaster. :)

I also haven’t played in years. I got introduced to the original red box rules when I was 13 and living in the USA, and in high school played everything from AD&D to Car Wars to Rolemaster. I also was DM for the group for a while, but in university other concerns took over.

I have always managed to prioritize it, sometimes to the detriment of other things. But after moving to AZ, finding a group that was similar to the one I'd been in wasn't happening. And quite frankly, Phoenix is an AD&D sort of town anyway - if you can find anyone that plays it seriously.

The pandemic has permanently put lots of games online. Our DM moved out of state, so my old group will likely never meet in person again.

For about two years I think, I was gaming with a friend over Skype. This was back before I had a webcam so it was audio only and long before the pandemic and Zoom. It's entirely possible to play via Skype/Zoom, you just have to adjust a bit. And you have to take the word of the other person as far as dice rolls are concerned.
