Not sure why games are released on macs. They are not gaming machines and aren't up to the task.

PC machines are vastly superior.
Because it's nice not to have to bootcamp into Windows or buy another computer just to play a game.

I don't even care about new games anymore, my 2010 Mac Pro handles all of the games I play now.

I don't assume F1 2016 wouldn't run with Apple's OpenGL, I know it wouldn't. Feral couldn't make F1 2015 work under OpenGL, and there's not a even a shred of possibility F1 2016 would miraculously work again.

If Apple had kept their OpenGL implementation updated, it probably would have been possible.

But they didn't.

Thus the speculation is moot.

Well, I agree that F1 2016 wouldn't run today with an opengl coming from the distant 2013. But that's obvious and goes without saying. IMHO it has yet to be proved, though, if Metal was the best way to go. Not that we can do anything about it.

I'm guessing that Steam will likely be the most popular distribution platform for them, so a quick look at the Steam hardware survey for Macs paints a pretty bleak picture.

It was interesting to see the percentage of the Mac video cards classified as ”Other” are 31.05% of the total amount. Since none of the more powerful desktop graphic cards are listed elsewhere I wonder if that means those 31% are representing those? If that is the case maybe a big chunk of those 30% are Hackintosh users and (such as myself) Mac Pro users with an upgraded graphics card (I have a GTX 970 in a Mac Pro from 2010 which makes for a pretty capable gaming machine, both in Windows and MacOS).

Here's how I play games on my Mac ..... I run a Win 10 VM in Parallels and use the Xbox app to stream games from my Xbox One. Works brilliantly :)
Why not just play on the Xbox One instead? Seems like you're making it more complicated than it needs to be... PC/Mac gaming is for people who don't want consoles no?

It was the only way to go, so there is nothing that has to be proved.

And how did you get in that conclusion ? What was wrong with opengl (other than the fact apple chose deliberately to abandon it) ?
Isn't apple alienated enough already with their proprietary choices ?

A 4GB graphics card LOL. Less than 5% of all Macs currently in use have that. And I might be generous. Probably less than 2 percent.
I have two Macs that meet the recamended specs.

I'm perfectly fine with Feral releasing this game. I will reward them with the purchase of the game. I hope they continue to port over other graphics intensive games.

If they could port the mass effect series, the dragon age games to round out the series, Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim I would be a very happy gamer.

Ummm... Feral had no choice? This isn't up for debate.

It's just how it is. You can debate various APIs etc all you want. But if the other options aren't available on macOS, it really doesn't matter.

Indeed.
No newer OpenGL, no Vulcan, just Metal.
Kudos to Feral for doing the ports using Metal, even if it's the only way to go. I just hope the effort porting games to the Mac isn't too great.

Games like X-Plane rely on OpenGL. They seem to work fine. Even the just released X-Plane 11 works on a Mac using OpenGL.
I'm sure some grfx extra's are therefore not possible on a Mac, but for the creators of X-Plane (Laminar Research) it would too much of a monumental effort to re-write the game using Metal just for the Mac users....

I wish Apple had supported Vulcan as well.

No, I wasn't talking about Feral. These guys are amazing, struggling to keep alive the Mac gaming scene for so many years, and having to put up with apple's dumb h/w and s/w choices along the way. I was talking about apple's choices to abandon opengl too soon, thus pushing Mac gaming even further back, as it wasn't already.

Has anyone tried it on a rMBP '13 with Intel Iris 6100?
I know Feral's website says that it is not supported, but maybe it was still playable

You have just described my situation exactly. Some of the newer ones are nice though, (and usually PS exclusives unfortunately).
